Hey guys, I have been considering buying two monitors (1920x1080) to use with my laptop. I would like to plug one monitor into the hdmi port and one into the dvi port and close my laptop and have one of the external monitors be my main screen. Basically, I just want my laptop to power the screen. Is this possible by just plugging them in? I have the gtx460m BTW. Thanks!

I believe that would work fine. You'd need to set your laptop to "do nothing" when closing lid though, or maybe some other tweaking (as closing the lid might snap off the backlight on the other monitors) but it should be definitely easily do-able. =D.

Yep, that's essentially it. Configure the displays however you want them, set the system to not respond to the lid being closed in the power plan options, and you should be set. :)

You may also have to disable the laptop monitor.

He said that's what he intends to do :) but yes the 460m supports any two outputs at the same time so 2 external or 1 external and internal.

Sorry I must have missed and and still missing it. Just see he was going to close the screen which doesnt always mean disabling it.

Try it yourself, plug two external monitors and have the laptop display as primary on a system that only supports two outputs at once. One display will be in standby, close the lid and the gpu will automatically enable the connected display as it can now run both externals.

So by closing the lid he is disabling the display (Just remember to tell the power profile to do nothing when plugged in than the display is closed or it will auto sleep!)

Opening the lid will revert it back so it's all handled automatically which will make it convenient.

I hope this makes it clearer how the gpu will behave :)

Pretty easy for me to test to be fair, I have two displays hooked to my p570wm which just has an fx1800m at the moment and it only does 2 displays at once.
