Is it safe to run an np8130 connected to an external monitor with the lid closed? I have it sitting on a cooler that elevates the back. Also, would playing demanding games be any extra concern?

It shouldn't be a problem. You might notice temps go up a few degrees due to blocking the minimal airflow/heat exchange it gets from the keyboard. But if you're elevating the back already it's not going to be an issue.
