I just ordered a 680m for my np8170. I was just wondering If modded drivers are still needed for it to function properly. Also, is there anything else I need to know about compatibility?

do the new NVIDIA drivers work without having to be modded?

    Thanks,
    ajbutch123

    Thanks!

Is there any news on whether or not the device ID is being added in the new drivers when they come out?

If it isn't too late you might be better off with the 7970m in an HM laptop. No utilization issues. The 680m is still a really good card, but the 7970m can beat it often when in a forced (non-enduro) mode, which is native with the NP8170. I'm just trying to help you get the best bang for your buck since both cards are within 10% performance of each other in most instances. I would never recommend the 7970m for an EM series laptop at this point, however.

What Tranta said, plus, depending on what you need it for, some intense (non gaming) programs run much better with the 7970m than the 680m.

I'm just not a big fan of radeon cards. Also I have a 120hz display which will not work with radeon cards.

Also, I am planning to overclock substantially anyway.

yes the new drivers work without having to be modded.
tbh though i would stick with what is pre loaded unless you are installing operating system yourself then the lates from nvidia have had good reports.

So, you are saying the brightness and everything will work with no problem on the new drivers on the HM series?

Depends on if your laptop can read the sub-system ID in the hardware ID correctly, if it turns out incorrect, you just need to take the incorrect number and replace 5105 or 7102 with it in the nvcv.inf, either one works because they both are using the same section.

So, I stuck my card in and booted up. Now it works until I install the drivers, then I get a blank screen as soon as windows boots. I need to update my bios, so If anyone has the latest bios and could give it to me... that would be AWESOME! It might take all day for sager to get back with me.

For the eDP (120Hz) screen version this is normal even on last BIOS (05). We changed the MXM modules, but nothing...
You may try to mod the lines used by an other eDP system like the Alienware 17inch R4 to 0000 in the NVIDIA driver as the new p-series EMs are all using LVDS for their screens.

What card was originally in your HM?

What did Sager say about the GTX 680M's compatibility with the 3D screen and your motherboard revision?

I once tried installing using Dell inf (nvdm.inf)'s GTX680M section when installing the driver on the P150EM, ended up that the resolution option appears in the NVIDIA control panel while the Clevo install section doesn't allow, you might want to try out dell's inf install section. That is probably the difference on the driver level between Muxed and Muxless type.

There are 4 versions of the GTX680M that Dell released:

    %NVIDIA_DEV.11A0.0550.1028% = Section181, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11A0&SUBSYS_05501028
    %NVIDIA_DEV.11A0.0551.1028% = Section183, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11A0&SUBSYS_05511028
    %NVIDIA_DEV.11A0.057B.1028% = Section185, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11A0&SUBSYS_057B1028
    %NVIDIA_DEV.11A0.0580.1028% = Section187, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11A0&SUBSYS_05801028

Maybe you should try out each of them.
