When I plug in the speakers to the headphone port I get a lot of static and I have to turn the volume knob on the speakers higher to get the usual loudness. The headphones work fine, however. Should I be connecting the speakers to the spdif port instead? How should I configure the realtek HD audio manager? Any other ways to solve this problem?
    Thanks.

    Maybe your speakers are bad.

If your speakers can fit in the spdif port, it doesn't hurt to try it anyway. If not, try a different set of speakers just to make sure that it's the laptop and not something external.

i have a new set of speakers that work with another computer, so its unlikely that they cause the problem. besides, I don't have another set of speakers to check.

how is an spdif port different from a headphone port? can I connect headphones to spdif? the speakers don't make any sound through spdif...

all the ports are the same... its the software that will configure what each port does.... thats why you notice notification when you plug in something.

SPDIF (coaxial) is for digital audio out .... for external digital 6-8 channel speakers or audio system.

I recommend to check the Realtek Sound Manager software when you plug in your speakers... check and test the settings in there.
