No...eot...eot....

ESATA ports aren't powered.
-
it would need a plug, just like a sata hard drive. (sata cable + power = win)
-
sigh i guess i should be happy there's a usb just below the esata port.
-
Looks like a lot of the e-sata supported drives (like the ridata ones), especially those that look like usb memory sticks need a power source or some sort of cable to provide power via the usb.
-
Let me know if you can even get the eSata working. As of right now, I have yet to speak to anyone who actually has it working.
I've had an open thread for a couple of days now, and no one has any idea why it won't work. -
i went to order this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820183242
but canceled when i found out the esata port wasn't powered. My question is ...how do you use the RiData SSD stick via the Esata port if the port isn't powered. If I attached this to the USB end would that work?

You plug the stick into the esata port, then use a usb patch cable to power it through usb.
-
Soviet Sunrise - thanks. Something like this, right?

Isn't the Esata port combined Sata+USB in one port?
-
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
Yes it is. But it cannot power the device when using sata. In other words, two different interfaces in one port, but cannot utilize properties of both at the same time.
-
Unless someone designed a cable to split the 2 out...
-
sooooo, i'm a little slow here.
I bought a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Extension Cable A Male / A Female that I was going to plug in the back of the following RiDATA esata SSD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820183242.
I was going to use the USB port for the power connection that is combined with the eSATA port...is that a no go? -

Again, you cannot power the esata SSD through the same port. You need to attach the usb extension cable to the usb male port on the device and to an unused usb port.
We may see powered esata soon. ( http://www.ohgizmo.com/2009/05/14/msi-unveils-power-esata/) -
Ahh ok. Now I'm with you...thanks SS.
np8662 eSATA port...is it powered?
