I'm debating whether to get an msata ssd or not.. I know that our msata slot only provides sata II speeds so im wondering if I should get a bigger one to fit the whole OS, or a smaller one just for caching. my primary drive is a regular HDD.
    thoughts?

Get bigger for OS then. Only need 120GB. It's more than enough for me to have Adobe, Office and OS on it with 70GB to spare.

Running your OS off of the msata will be much faster than doing it off of the normal hdd with or without the caching drive. I'd say get a 120gb one like mentioned above and install your os and a few of your programs on it.

Agreed, mSATA for OS then use the HDD for all your storage and games since they take a lot more room to install and only benefit from the mSATA speeds during start up and map load times.

I actually would recommend to buy a smaller MSATA drive for caching. It will make your mechanical hard drive (5400rpm or 7200rpm) running faster and smoother.

Make it an O.S. drive: 1. you need to buy a larger MSATA drive (= more money). 2. You will get benefit on only the O.S. and the program in the MSATA drive, not your mechanical hard drive.

Anyway, money is the major concern.

when my laptop arrives it won't have an os,

    it comes with

M Sata: Crucial 128GB CM4 Series mSATA SSD - Preconfigured as an OS Drive (Primary Drive C)
Primary Hard Disk Drive: 750GB 7200rpm SATA2 Hard Drive

-my question is, what is the best way to utilize the speed of the ssd + hdd?
-do i set a small cache partion? is that even possible if i'm running the OS on the ssd simultaneously?
-what is the process behind, "Preconfigured as an OS Drive" and would i simply boot from the win cd and select the ssd drive, when installing winos out of the box?

i do video editing, photo editing (hd + large format print) when working in my programs i'd like for there to be the least amount of loading times and rendering times. thanks, any info would be appreciated.

I don't believe intel's software lets you use a 128GB drive to cache.

I believe they limit you to 64gb leaving the rest to use for storage.

I would still recommend dedicating the Msata SSD to the OS and your most frequently used programs there is a massive difference between cached programs over time and programs installed on an SSD regardless of Sata II or III speeds.
