Hey, guys I got a question. Can u guys run games like COD4 maxed out settings with 1920x1080 with ease? Like does it run smooth every seconds of the game.

B/c on mine, some parts of the game stutters or skips every minute or so. Also, on the gpu-z (sorry, I'm a nub at this, know a little) in 2nd tab (sensor) is it suppose to read 200mhz for gpu core clock and 120mhz for memory clock?

cuz it kinda feels like the performance i get on the 280m is less than the performance i got from the 9800 gts on the m860tu (yup sold it for this beauty)

Sounds like your 280M is downclocked. Is it unplugged or is it on the "Power saver" power plan?

The 280m in the w860cu should max COD4 out at 1920x1080 easily. I'm talking about frames at 40-70 almost at all time. Your clocks looks like it set at powersaver mode and should not be where they are at when gaming.

    1. Which drivers are you using? Could be driver issues. Update and try different drivers.
    2. Make sure your power is plugged into the wall and your power plan is set
    to high performance.
    3. Possible powermizer issue causing gpu to downclocks every now and then. Download powermizer switch and have it turned off when on a/c.

yeah, mine is at high performance. I'm using 186.81 drivers. does it have to do something with the drivers. Also, my laptop fan has been crazy. Is it normal? Like the fan speed runs normal than all of a sudden it goes pretty fast then it goes slow.

    thats normal.

if you monitor your temps, you will find that when the temp reaches a certain temp (like 60C for the GPU), the fan will turn on, then if the temp continues to go up, the fan will spin faster.

then when the temp drops under a certain temp, then the fan will turn off.

thats typical with almost all notebooks.

Does it do it only on COD4?

Okay, looks like I have 2 problems.

My CPU temps are idling at 65-70. Just surfing the web and stuff hovers near 70. Is that normal?

and back to gpu, why is it downclocking? It's not on power save mode, it's on high performance. I'm using win7

Looks like you have many problems to tell you the truth. Cpu idle temps on i7 should be right around 50c and not much more when web surfing. Check your background services and see if anything is hogging up a lot of resources.

About your GPU, my advice to you is to do a clean uninstall and reinstall the video driver.

Grrr. what's going on. I just uninstalled my nvidia driver and now the temps for my CPU is going down to 60-65. So did it have something to do with my drivers???

Okay man, you are just crossed thread posting and its getting annoying. Have you check if there's anything running in the background that is constantly underloading you cpu?

my bad, just getting a bit frantic cuz i love this laptop. =D I'll stick to this one.

Lemme reinstall the nvidia driver first. B/c looks like after uninstalling my current driver, my cpu temps went down drastically. It's hovering between 50-54 now. I'll post back if the problem still there.

Hmm... how long does it take for the temps to come back down AFTER playing a game. The temps for my CPU hovers around for 68-78. I've waited about 8-10 minutes now but it my cpu temps are still in the same range. It's strange that my GPU is low temp (41-43) But my CPU is up high

It should take no more than 5 minutes for temperatures to decrease after intense gaming. You should check to see the current state of the thermal paste on the CPU. It may not have been properly applied, or the fan may not have been seated correctly. Open it up, and check it out.

As already suggested, You should check to see the CPU usage of your laptop when idle through the Taskmanager.
