hi. i just received my 5791 and i thought i knew what i was doing. i have both VISTA and XP so i figured i can use my own OS instead of paying for it.

when i put in the vista disc, it says "invalid system disc".

when i put in the XP disc, i can get to the set up, but then it says it can't find the hard drive (i do have one in there.).

    any tips would be appreciated.

edit: called xoticpc and they told me i have to buy a floppy drive to get this working at this point?

    *total guess*

That doesn't sound right -- check the BIOS and ensure its set to allow booting from CD/DVD media and away you go? I'm not intimate with Sagers version of the BIOS or the like, but in most lappies .. its that easy; on my old Thinkpad that was it -- boot from Windows media, installed right from the CD.

(Unless the disk is too large for the boot media to deal with or something?)

    Good luck!

i believe it's something to do with it being a SATA hard drive?

vista *should* already have sata drivers on the disc to install the OS...xp on the other hand could need a floppy with the sata drivers to see the drive to install

For XP, you need to go into the bios and disable ahcpi or something like that, I forget. But that allows you to install XP on a sata drive w/o the drivers. Then after XP is installed, you need to install the sata drivers and then reverse the thing in your bios.

In order to get XP installed you need to get the SATA drivers from Sager and integrate them into the install disk. The procedure can be found here (just substitute the Sager SATA HDD driver for the one they talk about):

Hope this helps you with XP!

4 hours, 8 programs, and 10 CD-Rs later... I'm finally installing WinXP on my Sager NP5791. Check out http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=165319

.... I'm going to throw something out the window... I used those drivers and it recognized the drive and installed everything, but when it went to reboot to start up from the HDD, it failed... said Hardware Disk Error and some such... So now I'm back at step 1... If anyone has any ideas.. I'm open to them.

I used the exact driver from that thread because I can't find any specifically for the NP5791.

    Edit---

Bingo, check out Step 6. You must leave the floppy disk in the drive so windows can copy the information over again. If you don't have a floppy disk and are attempting to do this VIA slipstream, it doesn't look like it will work. This is driving me nuts.

BTW, the "IntelĀ® 82801HEM SATA AHCI Controller" is the controller in the NP5791. The same one as the forum post for the HP.

    Last Edit--
Ok, it's working now... I just reformatted the entire drive (instead of doing a quick format) and everything worked perfectly (doing the slipstream).
