so i ordered it (finally) and i decided to check up on its status after a week and called in. It is still "processing" and the man who answered told me that they have a bug with the 9850 computer models and havent been able to get it working yet. Anyone hear about this?
when will my PC arrive![]()
(i dropped 5.5k lol i want this bad boy!)
-
Sager reckon there is a problem with the m980Nu but only seems to effect Sagers as no one else who has the Clevo M980Nu is reporting the issue
Panda we think has a duff system as he has things failing left right and center -
5.5k???? Good lord man, what did you put in it!
-
lol, he replaced all the copper with gold.
-
Which is your vendor? Sager direct? -
yes, i went sager direct...
(although technically they havent charged me and i can withdraw the order)
should i go through sager?
should i just get a clevo?
here are the specs for what i ordered, think i can do better?

For 5.5k, you can build an ultimate desktop. Honestly, I would stay within 1k-2k range. It's just not worth buying a laptop for 5.5k unless you have money growing trees.
Buy yourself a budget gaming laptop and save that money for your desktop or whatever. For pit sake, I bought my car 3 years ago from auction and fixed it up for 6.5k (2003 Matrix XRS)
My 2c...

i just have money growing shrubs :/
-
I've heard of money growing interest... but never trees or shrubs??
-
It's up to you, but a lot of those components can be had cheaper from Ebay and Newegg. You REALLY don't need 2 SSDs. I've got a single 120gb and it's more than enough. Doing RAID0 on SSD is just nuts. For reference, I have almost what you have (QX9300, only 4GB RAM, 120GB SSD, I swapped in an OEM BD player) and because I did it myself with after market parts it cost me almost half what you are spending.
Amd xleonid, sorry, but I disagree. The 9850 is just stunning, and it's a desktop replacement machine. -
Welcome to the M980NU/NP9850 (ha) owners club, read the owners thread all 70+ pages....lol. There's some good content in there about OC'ing and what Pman has been able to do and not
He wants an unlocked Bios.
Sagers machine will be delayed until they figure out what is the problem. Page 48 in owners thread states the issue. Followup on later pages like 74-77.
As Pman stated right now we know panda has a very suspect bum machine which blows (bad hd, stuttering, crashes, etc) but all the other Clevo M980NU owners (about 10-12 that actually have one) have not encountered any issues to date and (if I may state they love their machine). I am one waiting for a Sager (at the moment) and at least you haven't been charged I have.
IMO - As for 5.5k, I agree with poet and you should remove things and get them afterwards depending on what you need. Also feel there's no need for 8 gig at this point and I'd save that 685+ for now and go with 4 gig DDR3/1333. When the 4 gig sticks come down to the 100-200 range for 8 gig then buy it. They are not worth 685 dollars. The blue ray reader at 145 is if that is something you would use. Also the hard drives 2nd and 3rd could be dropped and pickup afterwards or order them now but you can save a lot of money there as well. Wow the QX9300 has dropped a bit in price but I did an HP part order and got mine for 545 shipped (found in the deals threads) but took 3 weeks to get here but saved 400-600 depending on where you buy one. Hope this helps. -
I'm baffled by the QX9300 as well as 8GB of RAM and the SSDs.
My test is if u put two laptops, one with those above specs, and the other with a P8700, 4GB of RAM, and the standard 320GB 7200RPM HDD, and you play your games (which I assume is that this laptop will be doing most of the time) can you notice a difference?
The SSDs will definitely show improvement in game loading times and installation, where as the quad core and the 8GB will probably make no noticeable difference in terms of FPS (unless maybe you like to play crysis AND render/encode HD video/images/etc. at the same time?)
Now don't get me wrong, if you have that much disposable income then all the power to you. If I had the funds I may opt for the RAM (the SSD capacity is still too small imo at this stage in the game seeing how alot of games are close to 10GB in size and approaching 15GB for some, 160GB is simply not enough) and for a 3ghz dual core than a quad core since virtually no games can show appreciable and significant FPS increase when ran on a quad core in a similar CPU line/architecture. -
"virtually no games can show appreciable and significant FPS increase when ran on a quad core in a similar CPU line/architecture."
There's a whole thread dedicated to the math of this in one of the forums, I'll look for it. But the simple truth is you are increasingly incorrect. -
Oh cool. I am very interested in this topic as well since I haven't found any other articles or studies or tests comparing dual core vs quad core.
Now obviously, I will be "increasingly incorrect" as quad core is becoming more mainstream and the gaming developers are writing and programming their games to more efficiently and effectively take advantage of the quad core architecture.
But at this point in time (I remember when GTA 4 came out and it was touted to be "the first game to fully take advantage of quad cores" and it was recommended to have a quad core CPU) I wonder whether or not it is worth the $1000 in this case to upgrade from a 2.53ghz dual core to 2.53ghz quad core. And how soon in the future with upcoming games will they significantly take advantage of quad-core to boost FPS. And yes there will definitely be improvements, there's no doubt about that. I guess the difference comes how much one wants to pay for that improvement. -

Just a heads up.. maybe you can get yourself the new one instead of the old one..
Be well and I hope this helped, JW -
Of course, the Core 2 Quad line is outdated anyways, you can buy a D900F with a Core i7 Quad Extreme 975 @ 3.33Ghz for $790 compared to the $915 of a 2.53ghz QX9300 (on xoticpc) edit: but the trade off is losing 1 GPU and a smaller screen size -
Yes QX9650 is a desktop CPU. The QX9300 is mobile. You could always go with a P9700 which is lower power and 2.8 dual core. Much cheaper too.
-
heck, if you are willing to trade 1 GPU and a smaller screen for an i7, then that may be an option as well.
Of course that would be the ultimate and a very itneresting test: single GTX280M with i7 975 vs SLI GTX280M with QX9300 vs SLI GTX280M with T9900 -
I have both an X9100 and a QX9300. In the end I went with the QX.
-
Oh ya X9100 is faster still than the T9900. I'd prolly go for the X9100 tho -
P.S. Ah, anyway, madpoet, can you check your rocketmail more regularly? I can't PM you here, so, it's difficult to get a quick response from you. I need some information about the shipping... -
Sure, I thought I'd responded to your email? Let me check and see if I missed one...
ordered my NP9850 a week ago...
