My 6990m died today :( and found this site on google searching for help on upgrading the gpu, also found some similar threads on the subject that ive read, but was hesitant on creating a new topic on the matter, since im new and all :hi2:

Well here goes, I have read in here that the 7970m is a good substitute to the old 6990, but the problem I see is getting a hold of one since I'm from Portugal and most links I find on the web always point towards American sites, also havent been lucky on finding one selling on ebay all are out of stock at the moment.

Can any one help me here pls, I dont know if its worth investing more money on trying to fix this or if I should just invest my money elsewhere like for example ressurect my Desktop thats gathering dust for some years now :D

Welcome to NBR! Sorry to hear about your GPU going bad. Just a heads up when you are looking for a new one do be sure its a "Clevo" branded one as other brands will not work. If you can get one at at good price the 7970M is still a very respectable performer.

For the questions if you should get a new one or update your desktop, it really comes down to how much you use your notebook and how much you game on it. I do use my desktop for all my gaming and really anything else that is CPU/GPU intensive. My notebook is use more for portability and occasional gaming.

Well, when I bought my Clevo at the time was more do to needing a new rig and ended up buying it because I was coming from an old and broken laptop and opted to continue using laptop since Clevo was upgrade friendly and I could open the hood to clean the fans more easily was a no brainer at the time.

But yeah I do play alot of games mostly and use media also and surf the web. The price or brand doesnt matter to me, since Im just looking for a fast solution right now, and if i can save it good if not better move on then, since it seems that getting old parts for it its becoming rarer this days. Should I be looking for other models also besides this one do let me know because I dont know which ones are compatible. Ive read in some topics in here that the 680m and 675m work.

Thanks for the welcome and pls do apologize my grammar since Im portuguese and I only use english as my second language :D

Edit: Just found this card for sale on canada ebay: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/CLEVO-P150HM-P170HM-Upgrade-Kit-GTX-680M-4GB-MXM-3-0b-with-VGA-Heatsink-/121219734573?pt=PCC_Video_TV_Cards&hash=item1c39425c2d#shpCntId
Will this work or is it too expensive since ill be ordering overseas and taxes and shipping rates will up the price.

    2 options devno
    - clevo 4GB 680m
    - clevo 2GB 7970m v1.2G

The latter is the cheaper of the two and both require certain bios fw to be installed prior to you receiving them.
Good luck and don't forget the classifieds here on notebookreview :)

As my own situation has made it clear to me, getting a 7970m for the Clevo is becoming increasingly difficult. From what I've seen, the 675m is at least comparable to your dead 6990m and is a lot cheaper than the 680m. It's still at best a mediocre deal in relation to the 7970m, though.

Decided to trash it for the moment moving on to update my desktop thats been gathering dust for some time now, also the price they ask for it doesnt ensure that the system will run for more then 2 years its obscene the price ranges on those cards since they are not supported anymore.

Yes, the prices really are obscene. I'd go back to a desktop in a heartbeat if I wasn't moving so frequently.

The thing is they are equal to the highest current mobile cards, there is virtually no gap between the 7970M and the 290.
