Did you correctly install thermal pads (possibly put new pads) on memory and voltage regulators and so on?
What are you temps when benchmarking gaming?

Maybe you need to flash vbios from premamod , or maybe the shop allready did it for you, also in prema mod notes it states " - Thermal protection activates at 87c (at this point it'll throttle in order to protect the system)" so maybe this can be the problem. It will be better to check with your shop about this.

Try to redo the benchmark with max fan active ( Fn+1 keys) , to see if it's a throttle issue.
Also, use GPU-z to have see clearly when your card is throttling and why ( thermal or power)

Flashing the VBIOS can stop throttling, i suggest you to check Slv7 work on techinferno forum, maybe he have modded VBIOS for 980m, or maybe Prema, as osaid previusly.......
Also, as you said the throttle with Unigine is not representative, if you don't have problems while gaming....what's the matter ? ;)
you can maybe try what i said earlier too ! you will have more informations.
you can also try to run unigine while reducing overall power connsumption ( minimum brightness, no battery in charge, no external devices,etc...), in order to see how it behave

    Elipsus

PS: yeah we can answer your questions, but if you don't listen or apply any of our advices, why would we bother answering you ?

I hope they put the extra thermal pad on the new VRM which is on the 980m.

Would be dumb not to. They'd have lots of fried cards.

Throttling is normal only when the card is getting too hot. Flashing the card may help, but it sounds like thermal conductivity is the problem, not the vBIOS.

Also, the throttling is not necessarily to conserve power. It is to prevent overheating and heat damage.

I suggest you post up graphs of the CPU/GPU usage along with CPU/GPU temperatures in a game to get a proper opinion on how the hardware is behaving. Logs would work too but they need to be in sync to get the best idea.

    Throttling on 980m .....?
Who would figure in 2015 this is the norm. Sounds like SOC in mobile phones...

You know, while the P150SM is a fairly capable machine... have we even asked what thermal paste they used? MX-2 + 980M + auto fans sounds like a no-no to me. A store can say what they want, but unless you checked you'd never know

Get some proper thermal paste like Gelid GC Extreme or IC Diamond.. Then you can use autofans.. MX-2 paste is junk..

Because A) the throttle bothers you (as with most people) and B) the support for the 980m requires a 100W+ TDP cooling setup, which requires better thermal paste and heatsinks which are working optimally on the 150*M. You would have the same issue on a 170 or 370 if your thermal paste is sub nominal or something misaligned/air leaking heatsinks etc etc. As a matter of fact the same thing happens with the 680m. (100W TDP)

You just need to have a good look at your cooling, and if you really dont like throttling flash the card. I know I was happier when I flashed my 680M VBIOS to limit throttling despite upgraded and ~optimal cooling.

Without full details of performance as was requested I could guess what was the issue was but that's all.
