does anyone know the correct location and thickness for the pads on the gtx 1060 (the normal 3.0b mxm, not the one for large laptops with the bit on the side)
i covered the 4 grey chips, the ram and the black chips on the edge, laptop shutdown when trying a game.
checked gpu-z and doing the rendering test sent gpu temp 80+ degree c. so i obiviously got the thickness and location wrong.
could only find guide for 680m on google images.
previous card was gtx 970m.

Take the heatsink out, lay the gpu on top and take a look on how it sits.

good idea, ok i think i got the thickness right as games work now but it's throttling as the temp reaches 90*C pretty quickly, something ain't right, if someone could point out which components to add pads to that would be helpful.
when i looked at the card all the pads are making contact.
the idle temp is 53.0*c atm. -

I dont think you have the core contact quite flat.
-
i think you are right, any tips?

hmmm....check and it's making contact as all the paste is squished.
temps keep climbling to 90 when i test a game. -
attached is pic of card, can someone tell me which components need covering and what thickness of pad i need to cut?

The same chips as every graphics card, the VRMs (black chips on top) are the most important, then the memory modules (Big black squares) and the inductors (R33 etc printed on them) followed by the capacitors (rectangles next to the inductors). No idea on the heights but I went with a 25cmx25xm 0.5mm pad and a 25cmx25xm 1mm pad when tweaking mine and stacked where needed.
Techniques for finding out range from Plasticine/bluetak on the card then squished with the heatsink (and measuring the resulting depth) to eyeballing it by placing the card on the heatsink out of the machine and eyeballing the fit. -
i managed to get the pads sorted out and also got a delta 230w power brick off ebay, now the card idles on 27-28*c instead of 40-50*C.
