I was reading in one of the other threads on here (don't remember which) and someone mentioned some of the Clevo's had trouble with certain SSDs based on which controller was in the SSD. Was this only a problem early on or are there certain ones I shouldn't buy.
Just ordered my Clevo so I wanted to go ahead and start looking for the SSD.

Intel branded SSD's are recommended.

SSD with Sandforce Drivers have shown to have problems in Clevo machines. I've heard since the latest driver updates they have been doing much better but as Larry mentioned, Intel's are recommended

Ive got an OCZ Vertex 3 (sandforce based) and Ive got no problems with it. Of course, I might be just one of the few people who are lucky. I flashed it to 2.15 firmware before I ever used it and maybe thats the trick - it works flawlessly. I love it!

How do you update the firmware before installing it?

You'll want to visit the manufacturer's website and follow instructions for that particular SSD. In the instance of OCZ, it is usually best to connect the SSD externally to another computer and run their Windows firmware updating utility. Intel and Crucial have similar methods.
You can also create a live Linux bootable USB drive and run the commands from there but it is a tad more difficult. Those instructions will also be listed on the manufacturer's website. -
Seems like I see a lot of people on these boards using the Crucial M4 or the OCZ Vertex. Anyone have any other recommendations?

Patriot SSDs are great too.
Intel SSDs are reliable, but 2x more expensive.
Kingston SSDs....meh. I am not impressed by them.
Samsung SSDs are very good.
Corsair SSDs are nice too.
