Nothing but joy on this laptop until now, but then I haven't bothered much with anything but setting up my VM's properly untill now.
First of all: Intel rapid storage technology application doesn not allow me to change any parameters, clearly, as the menus for doing so are not present. They should be there but they are not. Only thing I can do is turn on or off the Link power management - That's it. It has a manual which tells me what I am supposed to be able to do, but which I cannot. Irritating.
Now when I suddenly saw my Samsung 840 pro os - disk drop its write - random speed to around 30 000( Down from 85 000) is when I started considering this at all. I have followed every guide I could find to maximize the performance of my ssd, and up untill recently it was perfect. I felt my system was suddenly a tad more sluggish and sure enough....
I can not find any way of controlling sata power on this machine other than the rapid storage technology scheize that I have available and I am wondering if anybody has had any experience with this kind of problem on the same system or similar ??
My ssd has headroom, has TRIM enabled, is running on AHCI mode, has superfetch and prefetch disabled, system has hibernation disabled, system recovery is disabled, pagefile is disabled ( I have 24GB's of RAM) , write caching is enabled, buffer flushing has been toggled back and forth, indexing is turned off, system is always on max performance...
I have seen someone mention cpu - throttling, but can't seem to get any difference when I stress my cpu....

Try MS Ahci driver ! Just Uninstall Intel RST , then go to > Device Manager > Controller IDE ATA/ATAPI > SATA AHCI > Driver > Delete > Delete the driver software for this device. Reboot and test your SSD. Also, use Windows 8 (8.1) Disk Optimization, it sends TRIM command to your SSD, and chek for latest firmware for your SSD.

Thanks ! I do use the optimizer, and I have updated firmware.
If i Uninstall the Intel AHCI SATA driver, will the Microsoft driver still function with Intel Rapid Storage Technology or will that be a problem ?

Will be no any problems , if you dont have raid0 in your system, you always can back to intel rst driver (latest is 12.8.2.1000 WHQL ) . My OCZ Vector and Vertex 4 works faster with MS ahci driver in all tests include AS SSD and many others on Windows 8 and 8.1

Wow , what a ride ! Now that did not work , that's for sure. Upon uninstalling the intel ahci sata driver, system prompts reboot and that's all she wrote....... The system would not start, no repair was possible. Upon trying to repair startup, windows ruined my 1 TB Western Digital Blue in the main bay, since I guess that was the default sata - port. Didn't inform me, just deleted aeverything there. Finally I switched my Samsung 840 pro to the main bay and reinstalled. Since there are extremely few options AT ALL in the bios, I had no chance to see this coming. Well, recovered my whole WD Blue with EaseUS recovery, and finally everything is well. Second time I mess with Intel Rapid Storage Tech on my system - second time I fall on my ....
Anyway, reinstalled and the Samsung 840 pro is again working like a charm. Seems it likes a LOT of free space to work rapidly..... That's all I really can take from this, as I didn't really learn anything.

Not much help, but it really seems like trim is not working. Could thus be an issue with a pre 3.5 motherboard, i.e. before the second msata fix?
