Should work just fine with one GPU.
Also you might be able to get some more life out of that dead GPU by baking it.

Unless by burned out they mean that something has burned like a VRM or inductor.

You want the solder to just reach melting temperature but your oven might not be up to the task.

I did it long time ago and had few tries until it worked. Then had to do it again after few months as it died again. Every time it lasted longer and longer so not a bad solution. Best solution what I found was to cover it with foil and place it on 4 foil balls. It was in the preheated oven 10-12min, but I can't recall what was the exact temp. After I let it cool down before I moved it around. Youtube was my teacher on this one.

Keep in mind that the fumes are possibly unhealthy and cooking in same oven is not a good idea.

Longer and longer? Interesting as most reports indicate shorter and shorter.

Does it work with either as a single card?

Pretty sure he said he solved it, they didnt secure the CPU properly which caused the machine not to post.

And by "880M + 980M in SLI" i think he meant, that it posts with both cards in the notebook, not that it actually works.

It boots with both yes, but worth checking both cards work just fine by themselves so they can be sold off as needed.
