guys, im planning to buy sager np9390-s version, my previous laptop alienware m18x was given to my brother for his graduation, and of course if im going to buy a new one it should be different, can you give feedbacks for the np9390-s? im planning to buy the 780m sli with the base 4700m processor, im not really into benching and overclocking, only gaming and im more concentrated on the heat on the laptop
here are my questions, please guys i need answers from actual experience of the np9390-s users and not from internet reviews
Build quality
Heat
Battery life when general use except gaming?
Gaming performance and stability
Good drivers?
is it big/heavy/bulky?
Is 780m sli stable while gaming on demanding games like metro last light etc?
Mods and other software available for improving performance from stock components?
Any more feedbacks is appreciated, im planning in between AW 18 and sager np9390-s, money not a matter here
Thanks![]()

I have heard to get at least a 4800mq so as to make sure your cpu never bottlenecks your GPU. Look into that on here and on other forums.
-
Hello there reaversedge, I bought my sager np9380-s about a month or two ago. I am very very happy with this laptop, hands down the best laptop I could have bought. I guarantee you some serious gaming satisfaction with this thing. I entirely agree with the previous post. You need to upgrade to 4800MQ like I did for it not to bottleneck the SLI 780m. Some games require a really good CPU to cope with the pressure like battlefield 4. No need to get 2 mSata SSDs or 2 normal SSD's as raid 0 has negligible performance difference over one good SSD. Here's my post for reference http://forum.notebookreview.com/sager-clevo/743722-sager-owners-interested-buyers-read.html I suggest you buy a sager like mine and follow the four steps in my post to get the most out of it.
Also FYI, I did some pretty extensive research before dropping $3200 on a gaming device. So I assure you, this is as good as it gets. I chose it over Alienware laptops for various reasons of features and upgradability and also because it excels in cooling systems. In my honest opinion, this laptop has a better cooling system than any Alienware. Also it has more features such as being the only laptop with SLI 780m and 120Hz 3D screen customisable to any extent you can imagine.
Here are the answers to your questions:
Build quality
Very very well built, my only comment is that the outer surface of the laptop is somewhat easily scratchable. Not too easy, but its not metal or anything, except for the aluminium keyboard casing which is really nice and sturdy. The overall build quality is outstanding and made to last.
Heat
Definitely not a problem, like I said, it has better cooling than an alienware which is why I chose it.
Battery life when general use except gaming?
Surprisingly you could get about 2 hours or even more on the sager even though it doesnt have the optimus technology active in it where you would switch to the integrated intel chip.
Gaming performance and stability
Performs even better than expected and has almost zero issues with stability.
Good drivers?
Nvidia is well known to have excelled in the dual graphics card drivers and compatibility aspect of high end gaming. It is well supported and regularly updated.
is it big/heavy/bulky?
Big YES, heavy, 4 kg plus a big 330W power block which adds another 1 kg. But as far as big and heavy 17 inch gaming form factors go, its easy to handle once you get used to it. Also, a big plus, makes handling other smaller laptops feel like its much much easier than before. But you are probably already used to it from having an alienware.
Is 780m sli stable while gaming on demanding games like metro last light etc?
780m SLI is the best way to game on the most demanding games. The post I added has a video link to my recording of metro last light, it usually runs at over 90FPS not 40 which shows in the video due to the recording adding pressure on a already stressful situation. The only problem SLI may give you is playing with older games, and even then you could switch to a single graphics card mode.
Mods and other software available for improving performance from stock components?
Many mods available in these forums and excess heatsinks and whatnot, however, I only recommend you get a cooling pad for excess cooling aid, yet it is still unnecessary. Just follow my post and that should be more than enough. Enjoy gaming!!!
-
I have the 9380 instead of the 9390, but I think most of what I say will apply. 2 months in and a very happy and satisfied owner.
Build Quality
Pretty solid construction, if a bit on the bulky side. The plastic parts feel solid, and while there are tabs and latches, none of them feel like they'll snap off if you look at them the wrong way. Obviously the styling isn't as flashy as Alienware, but if you open up the bottom cover you'll see that most of the budget must have went into the actual engineering. IMO the internal layout is very logical and modular, so DIY servicing is very easy.
Heat
Good if you're content with stock paste job, superb if you don't mind messing around a bit yourself.
Prior to doing my own repasting, I was seeing the following temps with a -80 mV undervolt on the 4900MQ and using the laptop on a U3 cooling pad:
Ilde: CPU around 45; both 780Ms around 30
Gaming: CPU 80-85; GPU 65-85 depending on game (for reference, Sleeping Dogs with all max settings gives 85 C even after hours of gaming)
Stress testing*: CPU peaks at 91, averages to about 87; GPU steadily climbs up to 88 then fluctuates between 87-89
However after I repasted with MX-4, the temps looked much better:
Ilde: CPU anywhere between 35 and 42, but averages to about 39; both 780Ms around 28
Gaming: CPU usually below 75, occasional spikes to 80 but never above 80, GPU 55-78 depending on game, Sleeping Dogs now holds steady at 78 C
Stress testing*: CPU peaks at 78, averages to about 73; GPU steadily climbs up to 85 then fluctuates between 83-85
*Prime95 for CPU, Kombustor for GPU, each for 30 minutes separately
Gaming Performance
Even at stock speeds the 780M SLI will eat anything for breakfast, even Crysis 3 will push 50+ FPS on Ultra if you turn off AA. Games that don't support SLI can be a problem, but even a single 780M is powerful enough to net 70+ average FPS in Red Faction Armageddon on max settings with 8x MSAA (granted not the most intensive game out there, but it's a reference point). Hardware setup and drivers are rock-solid stable, had exactly 0 issues related to gaming (apart from certain games not supporting SLI)
Mods
There's an unlocked vBIOS available for pushing your 780M SLI to its limits; an unlocked BIOS is also in the works (and if you buy from Mythlogic they give you their own custom unlocked BIOS). Then there's the usual XTU/Afterburner/Precision X for software overclocking.
All in all, even with everything completely stock, the performance is more than satisfactory. If you're willing to put in a few extra hours, the performance truly goes to the next level.kawwa3 likes this. -
thanks guys, so i should go for 4800m just to be on the safe side? well actually as owning alienware before, for me aesthetics will just get old sooner or later, i believe that the sager screen quality is better than wled of aw m18x i owned before, maybe of course when i order on xoticpc for sager np9390-s, i would opt for a fiber wrap just to make it look better
honestly, i decided to turn on sager coz u get the bang-for-buck-and-looks-later principle, its not as flashy but after owning alienware it matters a little to me now, i concentrate more on the cooling capacity since i will game most of the time.
im planning to have the IC compound plus extra copper cooling updgrade, plus yeah i have a cooler already that i used in my m18x, also a mamba
got to put my order soon thenthanks for the help, will have follow up questions soon

Build looks great!
Most people opt for the matte display but they are largely personal preference as to which you like best. The glossy 90% is absolutely stunning if you don't mind the possible glare in bright environments. Let us know if you have any questions! -
1. Not much of a point with the copper cooling upgrade, I think someone had shown all it does is delay the time it takes to reach max temp, but doesn't actually lower the max temp. If it were me I would instead put that money towards a bigger and better SSD. The 840 Evo would a be much better choice over the stock 120GB m500.
2. If you have the cash to spare, consider getting the monitor calibrated, especially since you're going with the 90% gamut screen. If I'm not mistaken, the screen should be the AUO B173HW01 v4 panel. As you can see from that thread, the colors look over-saturated before the calibration. I'm using the same screen in mine, and after using it for 2 months, all I can say is I have no idea how I put up with ridiculously washed out colors for the past 7 years. This panel is simply stunning.
And if you care about this kinda stuff at all, I was able to overclock the refresh rate on mine all the way up to 113 Hz (default = 60), so mine could almost double as a 120 Hz panel. I definitely got extremely lucky with mine, but goes to show the build quality of these panels. (although I've set it to 95 Hz for daily use, and will probably get a 144 Hz external LCD soon as I am now a firm believer that refresh rate DOES matter beyond 60 Hz)
3. I would strongly recommend opting for the 3 year warranty. It's only $200, and the potential ROI (if we could call it that) will more than pay for itself if anything were to happen. Just to throw some numbers out there, a 780M will cost you $700+, the 4800MQ $350+, and the mobo at least $300-400. It makes absolutely no sense to cheap out on the warranty for a $3k machine.
Otherwise, a solid build, and the 4800MQ hits the sweetspot for price-performance ratio. Although Intel just announced the 4810MQ refresh that has +100 MHz clock speeds over the 4800MQ. You won't notice any real world difference, but if it goes for the same price and you don't mind waiting for the actual release, then I'd just wait for it.

I got my NP9380-S on thursday and today i ordered MX-4 for repaste. My temps are similar to your setup, especially the CPU temp concerns me. -

Also, make sure you give undervolting a try. Even with -50 mV you should be able to shave off 5 degrees.

whoa, i just thought that copper cooling upgrade will help, but anyway i will omit it, coz im mainly concerned to the safe side of the cooling, i mean of course in the long term.
honestly i prefer the glare typenah actually im not using the laptop under bright lights, mostly on light off
-
another question, which of the two are better? nvidia 780m sli or ati 8970m xfire?

For repasting, using more is usually not better. You want as thin a layer as possible for maximum thermal dissipation (with no air bubbles). Heat gets generated by component, transferred via the paste to the copper cooling, which then gets air cooled by a fan. More paste means more thermal retention which equals higher temps.
As for AMD vs Nvidia, I chose nvidia. Not a fanboy, wasn't concerned about price. It was really about the driver situation. Nvidia just seems to be wayyyyy better with their updates. Also, while it is just anecdotal, the number of threads on this very forum about the 69xx and 79xx series AMD cards dying/frying/generally having problems would give me pause when dropping that much coin on a laptop. If I am going to be spending upwards of $1,000, let alone $2,000 I want my machine to be as trouble free as possible. just my two cents. -
i have seen that there is also a np9380, is that a big difference with 9390-s? aside from the look and all? is the 9390-s have a 120hz monitor?
and specifically, what is the advantage of having a 120hz monitor? actually im not really into looks, since 9380 is less flashy but almost the same content as 9390 but a little cheaper -
Support.1@XOTIC PC Company Representative
The -S on either one just signifies a special configuration with discounted pricing for it. Both have regular non -S versions. The 9380 will be the only capable of 120hz/3D display. The 9390 lacks the connection for it. Beyond the looks and that 3D capability they're pretty much identical in the way they can be configured.
-
sorry about the confusion, im choosing between 9380-s and 9390-s, only that 9380-s has a 120hz screen and more cheaper than the 9390-s which looks more flashy

wow, im really outdated alot, im not aware of exceeding the 60fps cap, well having a nice talk with josh i learned that the 9380-s tops with the 120hz screen, not to mention it has dual gpus, less price compared to 9390-s
new order to be is herecan you give comments on my new custom build?

now to think of it, is the copper cooling upgrade will really matter? im not sure, is someone here with a copper cooling upgraded laptop? did you experience any difference?
also, should i go with win 8 or win 7? i used windows 7 before, not sure if there's a boost from win 7 to win 8 in terms of general usage or gaming -
Nice build and good choice to go with the 9380-S. 120Hz screen is a must have today, especially on gaming.
Like said, the copper cooling upgrade is not so mandatory. It will only take longer to reach maximum temperatures, due to the larger copper mass.
I would ditch the copper upgrade and go with SSD. You can't have enough fast storage space. -
Yeah as mentioned definitely try to squeeze in an SSD if you can. Your OS will thank you (and you'll thank yourself) even with the 120GB drives. The slowest SSD will still run circles around a WD Velociraptor, and the 7200 RPM HDD is no Velociraptor
As to Win 7 or Win 8, it all comes down to personal preference, I don't think there's a noticeable difference in gaming performance from what I've read, but I'm using Win 7 and plan on skipping Win 8 altogether so I'm biased. -
Support.3@XOTIC PC Company Representative
Agreed with the SSD/mSATA. If it changes your budget too much you can get rid of one of the 750GB you have in there for RAID 0. 1 SSD/mSATA is still much faster then 2x HDD in RAID 0.
-
agreed, dtiched the copper cooling upgrade, win 8 and monitor calibration. replaced it with msata ssd on slot 1 with 120GB Crucial M5 mSATA SSD - Preconfigured as an OS Drive ( Operating System – Drive C: )
also when i boot it and will install my own win 7 64 bit it will automatically go in my first msata right?
also, will there be more difference if i added another identical msata to slot 2, which is also a 120gb crucial m5 ssd, and put them on raid, will the game be more faster or is it only the loading time and windows start up effect? -
Support.3@XOTIC PC Company Representative
During Windows installation it will ask you which drive you want to install it on.
You may have to change the boot order in BIOS though, but if its the only bootable device in the computer it will boot from it after it checks the devices assigned before the mSATA. -
actually i opted for an ssd already, i will put it in hard drive slot 1, the 120GB Crucial M5 Series, then the second hard drive will be the normal 750gb 7200rpm hdd
