I am going to upgrade the processor in my D901C in the near future.

q9550s would give almost not improvement (5%) in performance but it has a lower TDP (65 W)
q9650 12 % improvement but also more heat.

Noise is important for me. Should I wait for a q9650s version? Is it 12 % perfomance worth?

I'm pretty sure there won't be any more updates to the LGA775 socket (Core 2 series), as Core i7 is all the rage now. Personally I'm hopefully going to be upgrading my D910C's processor to a Q9650 at the end of the month. So with that, go for the Q9650!

get the best. between those two. i would get the q9650 without a second thought.

when i had the np9262. i was going for the x3380 just because of the .16mhz difference from the q9650 at 3.0ghz. but that's just me. :)

I've got the Q9650 in my D901C and it screams. Don't notice much heat but I use it for music production, not gaming.

I've had a Q9650 in my NP9262/D901C for about a year now with absolutely NO issues at all.It has never, ever Blu Screened me.
All I can say is the cooling for this laptop is amazing and one of the best for any system( this is not the fanboy in me speaking just the truth) it runs cool and strong to this day.
If $$$ is not a issue go for the faster Quad.

Thanks for the replies. The q9550s and q9650/x3770 are roughly the same price, but the x3880 is too expensive. I will in a few weeks what upgrade would I do. The difference from 2.83 GHz to 3GHz is unnoticeable anyway 5%.
