    my friend has a np7280 laptop with nvidia 480m sli on it, he's asking if he can upgrade it to nvidia 580m sli if possible...thanks for the help guys :D

    He should be able to. He might need a BIOS flash though.

    he was thinking of shipping it back or replacing the card himself...i don't know if its easy to just switch the cards?

    I've never done it. Though people will say it's easy. If he's under labour warranty though, they'll do it for free for him; he'll just be out of it for a short while.

    You'll be fine to upgrade the graphics card to the 580M, like D2 Ultima mentioned you might need a BIOS flash. But they wont do it for free if he's just wanting to upgrade the cards. Free is only for warranty and it sounds like he just wants to upgrade to get newer cards. Finding the cards sold individually will be the tough part, and if you can manage to find them expect to pay around $900 per card. Probably not very cost effective for the increase in performance you'll get.
