Hello guys, I've been lurking these forums for a while but decided to post about my sager 8170 i bought a while ago.

I'm playing skyrim right now, and i'm sure a bunch of you are enjoying it as well, though I am a bit boggled with the framerate and I hope someone can point me into the right direction of what I can do. I have the 2630qm i7 proc, 8 gigs of ram, and a 6990m. At everything ULTRA I only get like 5-15 fps in scenic areas. This seems odd considering people with 6970m's are playing at everything max and 30+ fps everywhere. I reinstalled the stock vga drivers that came with the disk but it didn't really help, I would greatly appreciate if anyone has had similar issues and knows what I can do to help the FPS :)

Anyone know the best drivers to use with 6990m in skyrim, to be short?

    thanks!

r u sure ppl are playing with ultra with 6990m? what abt the res? 1080p too? if you just reduce one or 2 setting to medium you shd have a good diff. i personally have had nvida all my life, good driver support. i m getting a laptop in a week, was thinking about moving to amd 6990m since its just $145. now that you say this..... how about the other games?? and hows the driver support from the website? did you upgrade it successfully? i had 5870 once with asus and that gave me trouble updating drivers.

Yeah, from the day I ordered the laptop I was just debating so hard between nvidea because in the past i've always had better luck with it, but the fact the 6990m was about 200$ cheaper than the 580m it sold me in the end. I'm going to try the latest drivers i can find now, but was hoping someone knew some stable drivers before i have to dl/reinstall/uninstall rinse and repeat process again haha. The card works great for GTA 4, BFBC2.

And yeah, as of now I'm playing the game with a lot of settings lowered, and getting 20-40fps, so its playable, i just don't feel like i'm getting the genuine experience i should be haha! but thanks for your input!

the witcher 2 runs much more smoothly than skyrim. I'm having the same problems as you. It's major weird because the 6990m should eat through it like butter. I'm guessing the culprit are the drivers, even though I have the 11.10 drivers. keepin' me fingers crossed.

Nvidia already released performance drivers for Skyrim... Now we wait for AMD to do the same. I'm sure you will be able to max out Skyrim completely when new drivers are released.

check in catalyst under 3d settings that you have standard AA filter selected and not edge-detect. also override application settings (and turn em off in skyrim) for both AA and AF, otherwise you might experience texture problems ingame. and be sure to also select multi sample AA and not adaptive or SSAA. hope this helps

didn't help. nothing does. even running in 720p at low specs yeilds almost the same results. I have to say I'm very disappointed in amd this time around. It's such a game, but I'm just not able to enjoy it this way.

I'm not sure what the problem would be with the 6990M, I've got a 6970M with everything set to ultra high @1080p wih full AA and AF and framerates are extremely smooth.

I'm using Catalyst 11.9, maybe roll-back and see if that helps?

Actually it does. On the bethesda skyrim forums people are saying this game stresses the CPU more than the GPU. The CPU renders all the shadows. More powerful processor = better performance

Out of curiosity, any luck updating to the patch that was released yesterday too?

(On a sidenote, thank you Bethesda for putting up a patch for your game on release day instead of waiting for weeks.)

Try dumping down the shadows to high or medium and see if that makes a difference for you. It helped my frames a lot, I think there's a problem with the game that'll be patched to make it a bit easier on nvidia cards

    My settings:

Clocked at 700-1600. I know that 6990m should be on par with 580m.
And i know that 485m is the same card as 580m beside the newer core. Same spec.
Since my card is overclocked above 580m speeds, i thought to share it anyway.
Framerate ranges from 48 to 60 stable. Mostly 50-55.
Uh also my FOV is 82.5, and ive enabled manually LandCastShadows and Rock Shadows as well. Ive left TreeCastsShadow off, since its almost pointless.

Sorry i dont have any helpful advice, but I think you guys should be running it just fine on ultra settings. Ive got a 2670qm and 6990m in a 8150, and it runs beautifully. Using the newest driver, I think just dl'd from AMD's website.

Hopefully someone can figure out what's wrong for you. I cant even say ive experiences hiccups or anything in the framerate.

Neat man what are your fps readings? I know it can be smooth, but I guess you can't hit even 50fps at ultra. Not everywhere at least.
And by ultra I mean 8xMsaa and fxaa, with very maxed setting.
30-35fps is not acceptable as smooth IMHO. Gamebryo's based engines should run above 50fps to feel ok on a pc.

Im not actually sure, ill have to give it a shot with fraps or something (unless you have a better option to measure fps). To be honest, I just judge the game from what I can see. If I cant notice fps dipping, why look for it? Ill check it out for the purpose of the thread though.

man these new AMD cards are junk . Drivers have always been an issue.
thank god i stick to Nvidia.
Why do you think they lowered 100$ on that "powerful" card anyways. I guess there are so many issues.

Alright, so I played for a bit with fraps up, ultra settings, 8xMsaa and fxaa on, and youre more or less right. I didnt have fxaa on before when i was playing. I was only over 50fps when running around outside the greybeard's fortress. Most of the time I was running 38 - 45 fps when I traveled down into the lower areas to try to find some busier fights. The lowest I got it to dip to was 30, however that only happened once, and there didnt seem to be any rhyme or reason. Im sure if i could find a very large battle it would go even lower at points.

Im going to try lowering some setting to see if 50fps is a noticeable improvement.

Hopefully the above information helps someone.

Your right on the driver issues with AMD products, but the cards aren't junk. And Nvidia cards are built no differently. Actually you should head over to the Apple discussions and see how many people were affected by faulty GPU's sold by Nvidia. Actually they sold them to just about every manufacturer. It was one of the largest Class Action suits Apple was ever involved in. Apple also switched to AMD last year with thier updated MBP's. And don't forget how Nvidia loves to rebrand old GPU's and charge a small fortune for that.

To me it was a no brainer, the slight edge the 580m has is minimal to cost vs performance, and I believe that is why AMD priced this card in this range. After reading all the reviews I could get my hands on, the $300 price difference just seemed more like Green Greed then a performance increase.

I'm actually very happy that AMD is offering very good performing GPU's with extremly fair prices, it's keeping Nvidia in check with prices. When AMD released the 6950 and the 6970 desktop GPU's, it didn't take long for the green machine to drop prices on thier offereings. Believe it or not we all need AMD to stay strong, and keep Nvidia prices fair and competitive. Nvidia has overcharged us rebranded GPU's for far too long. This is just my opinion yours may differ.

Guys with 6970/6990 try my settings ,maybe it helps:

Almost 60everywhere, with dips down to 50-45. Plus FXAA which looks nice.

If you want into Documents\MyGames\SkyrimPrefs.ini you can enable also:

    bDrawLandShadows=1
    bTreesReceiveShadows=1

It will eat a good amount of fps which you can limit by disabling FXAA and enabling 2xAA, but it will look amazing.

a bit disappointing to hear that the 6990m is having driver issues. i'm leaning heavily toward it since the price is hard to beat. hopefully it'll only take a patch or two on bethesda's side to fix it.

how're the temperatures while running skyrim?
