My son wants a laptop for gaming. He has approx $900. How well would the NP5160 play current games (FPS/RTS) if he bumps up the screen to the 1920x1080? I'm assuming it would be fine for the default screen 1366x768?

The 540M is supposedly worse than my 9800M GTS games like Crysis your screwed. I am not sure how many CURRENT games would make the list. With a decent CPU he could still play Bad Company 2 maybe.

ASUS doesnt consider any of their laptops with that GPU a gaming laptop and when I looked it up I understood why. Its decent but i think the 5650 radeon is also above it with exceptions to maybe AA performance. For 900 bucks your buying other features, not gaming performance.

I payed 900 for this 2 years ago and it seems in the 750 and just above category these days all I am missing is an i7.

Here is a review of the 5160, there is a chart toward the bottom showing performance using the 1366x768 resolution. They claim at 1600x900 mid settings are about the best. At 1920x1080 well not so good. You be the judge of what is acceptable.

While notebook check does not have the best reputation, the information is good enough for determining how well the 540 performs.
