i bought the NP9150 from sager few days ago and everything is really good (except for the 7970m driver issues) but it runs really hot while playing bf3 so i wanted to buy a cooling pad for it. i looked in many places and found Cooler Master Storm SF 19 to be the best but i want a usb powered pad (this one uses DC 12V / 2.5A adapter). so i could use some suggestions from u guys. thanks
also one thats comfortable and doesnt block airflow on the lap would be nice thanks again.

The Cooler Master Notepal U2 and U3 are pretty popular. I ordered a U3 (rated for 17" laptops) last week from newegg for $19.99 on sale from $29.99. I was going to get u2 but for same price I got the bigger one with more fans lol. However, I read the u2 has two bigger fans.

Just wondering, but are you actually able to play BF3 multiplayer with the 7970m?

My fps drops below 25 at times, but the game does feel smooth. I'd say its very playable, though not perfect. Some one mentioned that sniping becomes particularly hard but I hardly use sniper rifles :).

Oh, and it is maxed with no AA or blur.

I'm awaiting the cooler. It was 2-3 day free shipping and I ordered last Thursday. I will reply to this thread with temperature differences for sure. I only play Batman AA and AC. With v-sync off and ultra settings, I get like 142fps average using the built-in benchmark, with overclocked gpu. This usually puts me at 88-90 degrees Celsius with the back propped by two books. I am hoping to get it down to 80 degrees. With vsync on and ultra settings, its roughly 78-82 degrees Celsius.

I'll be more detailed when I post back :)

UPS just dropped it off :)

First thing I noticed, this thing is a monster!!! Looking back I would have gotten the U2 had the U3 not been on sale.

Here are some pictures. I am fixing a friend's laptop (HP 17.3") so I have a picture of it there for reference. My laptop is the Clevo (M_LIB_L - missing A's cause my cat picked them off lol).

There are three fans with the U3 so it is kinda nice. The fans are same size as the ones from U2, just so you know. There is a speed dial, and the RPM goes from 950-1800rpm. At max speed, it is like a low hum, kind of like if your Clevo is idling at 55-60 degrees Celsius. The USB port has a handy back port, so you aren't loosing a port. I can hook my mouse and cooler into the same port :) Also, I really like that the fans can be aligned according to the laptop vents. That is super cool. The metal material is lightweight and looks good/minimal.

I'll have to post back later with numbers. These were my first impressions.

Temperatures aside, this thing probably deserves a 9/10. Slightly too bulky (cosndering it is for 17" laptop I won't dock off a point), but the height/angle is not adjustable, thus 9/10.

Ok. Sorry in advanced for no screenshots or pictures. I was too lazy to set up the hotkeys in afterburner lol.

Testing system: i7-2630qm, 6990m, 24gb DDR3 1333mhz RAM (I got two 8gb sodimms for free so I swapped out two of my 4gb sticks), Clevo p150hm, 360gb OCZ SSD.

6990m is known for its heat. For this testing I just used stock clocks (715mhz core and 900mhz memory).

System fan was monitored and was running between 40-60% speed during gameplay for all tests.

Test A: After thirty minutes of batman arkam asylum (everything maxed with 4x aa, v-sync off, 1080p), I get consistent 97-99% gpu utilization. Fps average around 110-120.

Test B: Thirty minutes with v-sync on, I get 40-60% gpu utilization. 60fps and lower gpu utilization due to v-sync on. Everything maxed, 4x aa.

I shut the laptop down for an hour or so then tested again with the cooler on full blast.

    No cooler:
Test A: 88 degrees Celsius average, 91 degrees max.
Test B: 78-82 degrees Celsius, 82 degrees max.

    With cooler:
Test A: 80 degrees Celsius, 82 degrees max.
Test B: 74 degrees Celsius, 78 degrees Celsius max.

So you'll get about a 4-10 degree drop on the gpu temp, depending on your game and game settings. Pretty good. This was a test on Batman AA which is pretty graphic intensive, but definitely not the most. For a $20 cooler I'm ok with that :)

Idle temperatures however, aren't drastically cooler. Before gaming I am usually at 35-40 degrees Celsius, and after playing I am at 45-50 degrees Celsius for an hour or so before it drops further. Kinda strange. With the cooler, I stayed at 32 degrees Celsius before and 45 degrees after. So idling isnt much improved.

I did not monitor CPU temperatures because they are always at reasonable temps during heavy load, so I am not worried about cooling them as much.

Note. If I turn the system fan to 100% with fn+1, I get awesome temps. 77 degrees max without cooler and 75 degrees max with cooler. I'm weary to use the fan at 100% all the time though.

The u3 is definitely a desktop cooler. While it has good airflow on the lap, it isn't very comfortable. The base has rubber bottoms so it isn't poking you in the leg, but it is still kinda hard and clunky and depending on how you sit the metal edge rubs against the top of your legs. I attribute this to the overall footprint of the U3. The smaller U2 would be more usable on the lap. I would recommend getting a different cooler if you do plan on using it on your lap, one designed for lap usage or with softer bottom edges :)

    +1

Had the U3 not been in sale for $19.99 with free shipping, I would have gotten the U2 and three fan as you :)

How did you monitor the system fans?

By "No Cooler", do mean the laptop was resting flat on a desk? Or was it resting on the cooling pad, but with the fans off? If it was flat on a desk, it might be interesting to do the same test with the laptop on the cooling pad but with the fans off to distinguish between the cooler pad's fans contribution vs just improved airflow under the laptop.

I used the built-in fan speed monitor from MSI Afterburner as well as adding the profile from HWINFO. Link: HWiNFO64 Download

It may be because the update intervals are different from the two programs but the percentage is always a little bit off between them, +-10%.

Great suggestion for testing "no cooler" vs "cooler off". By No cooler, I did it with the back corners propped up by two paperback books, each about 0.5 inch thick, which is how I always used the laptop anyways. Better typing angle + airflow. :) The temperatures are no doubt higher with just a flat surface. Before I purchased Batman AA/AC last month, I never really played games on this laptop, so I never monitored the temperatures. The first time I played Batman the temperatures were in low 90s (90-94) cause I forgot to use my book prop method.

All this said, the extra airflow from the cooler with fans off would probably result in a decrease in 1-2 degrees Celsius vs Book method. I am done testing though lol. I'm happy with the product, albeit large. I do find the keyboard typing angle superb!

sorry to revive this thread but I couldn't find my answer anywhere !
I also have a NP9150 with a 7970m and use it without any battery and plug most of the time.
I also have a notepad U2, do you guys have any tips on where to place the fans?
Could someone draw me where to place them quickly please.
