Hi everyone,
I've had my sager for a while now and I'm extremely happy with it. It's more than I expected, however recently I've discovered 2 problems:
1. The LCD screen no longer automatically turns itself off when I flip the lid shut. (I can turn it off using the function + 2 shortcut though)
2. The microphone in jack no longer works. I cannot get any sound from my headphones using that jack at all. (I've been able to get sound from the 2 jacks on either side though. The one on the left is very quiet, but good sound, and the one on the right is good volume, but low quality sound.)
I've been able to find some feedback about the headphone jack being a little bit temperamental so at least I know I'm not the only one I guess. I wonder if there is another solution other than buying a sound card and circumventing the problem altogether...
There seems to be no info on the LCD issue though. In all honesty I suspect it's just a setting :/ I probably just messed with something too much lol.
I hope someone can shed some more light on these issues for me. I'd hate to think my sager has let me down. I've talked it up so much already! lol
Cheers,
Scrampy

For the LCD one. Try right-clicking on your desktop, go to properties. Under the screensaver tab, click the Power button. There should be something there about what the computer does when you close the lid. I can't give you anymore details right now since I'm at work and I don't have a notebook here.
You might have changed an option there. -
Yeah, you're right to some point, but I don't think it's the problem here... The options only allows to standby or power down. Closing the lid should ALWAYS close the screen, ie turn off the backlight at least.
I had the same problem and I had to RMA mine. There's a magnetic sensor in the lid hinge and probably it's not working anymore.
And have the jack fixed also in the same RMA trip also.
-
hmmm, I was very hopeful about the advice to change the power settings. I thought it would work because the setting was to "do nothing". I changed it back to "stand by" mode but the LCD still stays on.
What is RMA p_boucher? I figure it means take it back to the manufacturer right? lol. I think I'll make a call to the guys I bought it from if I have too much trouble fixing it myself.
Any other thoughts?
What about a sound card to get around the headphone problem? I've read that to fix the headphone jack, a new motherboard is needed as it's hardwired in there or something. Does that sound right to you?
Cheers,
Scrampy -
btw, I had never changed that option in the power settings. I have installed a bit of new stuff lately though. a maxtor external hdd? Who knows... but I'm sure it was a setting changed by a software / hardware install for that one. I just cant seem to figure it out. Maybe a restore from backup is needed.... hmmmm
-
Whatever the settings are, there is a hardware swith in the hinge that closes the backlight or the screen at around 5-6 inches before the lid is completely closed. So if you still can see the screen when let say there is like on inch before it's closed, that switch need to be replaced/repositionned.
As for the audio, it looks like you change some settings in the audio control panel. Some newer audio chips can send audio trough whatever port you set in the control panel. If you have a realtek chip, then look in the Realtek hif def audio control panel and make sure that you have the proper speaker config and that all ports are set accordingly: pink for mic, green for left/right, etc...
Oh yeah, an RMA is a Return merchandise authorisation, and yes, it means sending it back to your reseller or sager. I know it sucks because it's not a big problem, and you could wait for something else to fail (you don't wish this lol) and have everythinh fixed. -
Scrampy, you have the same problem as myself and a few others. Seems to me that Sager needs to do something about that damn audio jack.
I got myself a Creative USB sound card and it works marvelousely. You do have to dwl the drivers for the creative site, but it`s not a long ordeal.
If you can afford to do it, send it back and tell them to upgrade the mobo for the 8800M GTX, since the broken audio jack means a mainboard replacementhaha, way to go sager, as I said on another thread, for a 2 bucks piece, the change half of the laptop
-
hmmm, I'm considering the sending back thing, but I live in Australia you see. I was really hoping I wouldnt have to send it anywhere. I think the sound card is the best option for me anyway. I intended to get one at some point so I could do some recording anyway.
The LCD however is more of an issue. I've taken the front trim off as instructed by tech support at sager and am examining the "magnet" that I am supposed to be finding on the bottom left. I dont find one :/
I'll keep you posted. Did you get your mo bo upgraded in the end for the headphone jack issue you had?
Scrampy
oh, and what's the best sound card for my system? where do I plug it in etc? I'm just starting to look around. got a link to the one you got? -
i called them yesterday asking about the head phone jack issue i know someone having this issue iam not. he doesnt like to ever call anyone i dont know why.. anyway i asked if they would "replace" the mobo with the upgraded one or not if there was a issue i was told no. they will be using the same part that is in the unit and they will not be putting in the one from the 5792. just fyi.. not sure if the person i spoke to there is correct but that came right from sager on the phone
-
Zfactor , you may be right, but what I was talking about implied an upgrade, which meant $ being payed to Sager/xotic whatever.
Bummer that your unit has issues and you`re australian,mate...I would suggest hastling them over until they do something about it, insist how you won`t ship it and pay 400$ just for a stupid small part without getting something else worth the bother, like the 8800M GTX for exampleIt doesn`t hurt to try.
-
lol, I like the way you're thinking eleron911, but I also know that the xotic reps hang out here and now my evil plan for a full upgrade to the newest awesome sager machine for free is foiled. :/ lol.
Anyway, this magnetic switch you speak of p_boucher... have you ever had to replace / fix one of them? I've got the cover off the lcd now and I have found that the area is indeed magnetic. I just cant seem to find the magnet itself so I can make any adjustments. I'm still waiting for another reply from sager tech support.
I really dont want to send the laptop back if I dont have to. I would miss it too much! haha
I'm off to go shopping for a new sound card. -
what not ask them if they can send you the magnet that goes in there and just place it in there. i would try that first
-
All these kind of motherboard repairs are done by Sager , since it requires opening the laptop, and opening it means voiding the warranty for the end-user...
I will send my laptop back, when i`ll be able to upgrade to the 88M GTX and Penryn CPUs. In june, since I have the 2 year warranty and right now, performance seems to be sufficient. -
they told him its just missing a magnet right?? if so there is not reason he cant put the magnet in himself..
-
You have to understand that regardless of the size of the part and operation, opening the laptop void the warranty.
I still think you best bet is to bargain with them for the shipping to get you an 8800M GTX... -
Just for the record, the guy at sager tech support instructed me to remove the front cover and see if the magnet has "fall off".
Here is the direct quote: "The front lcd case, remove screws under the rubber pad, then you can pop open the cover look the bottom side on the left, maybe the magnet is fall off."
I cannot locate the magnet though. The area is magnetic and it looks like there is nothing wrong with the soldered connection that exists there.
Anyway, the guys at xotic and at sager are being very helpful so I'm sure things will work out.
The idea of sending the laptop back is not appealing at all though. I wonder if it would cost less to send it to someone here in Australia to have it fixed.
*thoughtful sigh* -
OK, I did it!
After finally searching and searching around the LCD I decided that I could in fact just live with the problem.
I went to return the LCD case and found the magnet inside the case! What a surprise, I hadn't even thought to look there. Duh! (in my defense, it was covered in black insulation tape, the same color as the LCD case)
I promptly re-glued the magnet to it's rightful place, replaced the LCD cover and whacko! It works again.
I appreciate your advice everyone, even if it took me about 2 weeks to actually find the part lol.
A note to anyone else searching for info on how to repair the magnetic switch to turn off LCD on close of their laptop: The magnet is taped to the inside of the LCD cover strip on the inside left near the hinge (about 3 inches from the edge). In my case it was glued and taped into it's little frame. I live in quite a hot environment so I think the tape and the glue had simply melted a little and it slid loose.
I removed the little rubber stoppers, unscrewed the 7 screws and gently unclipped the cover. Searched for 2 weeks. (this step is optional!), and then found it inside the cover, not on the laptop. If anyone has a Sager and needs help with this issue I'm happy to share my experience. I personally found very little info while searching the web.
Thanks again go out to Amber at Xotic PC and to David at Sager Tech Support for their patience and kind assistance.
Sincerely,
Scrampy - One happy Aussie with a Sager NP5790 -
