Are you sure the fans are still operational?

What is over heating? CPU? GPU?

Do you recall which thermal paste was used? Perhaps it has lost its heat conductive properties, and you need to reapply.

stock factory thermal paste. i thought that, but he guy at the pc store said it was unlikely.

Seems reapplication of thermal paste is necessary asap or risk further damage. Brittle and old compounds do that.

Besides a repasting recommendation, a simple question. Are you using the laptop on a flat hard surface so nothing is blocking the intake or output vents?

Usually when temps go up, thermal paste is definitely worth re-applying as mentioned.

If there is no dust certainly, make sure you remove the fans and give them a good inspection first.

Repaste your CPU+GPU with some Gelid GC Extreme.. Thermal paste is old now... Also clean the fans while you can..
