NVIDIA GeForce GTX285M with 1024 MB GDDR3 RAM 256 Bit
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 with 1024MB GDDR5 Memory and DirectX

Can I install the GTX285M or The ATI one in my sager np8662? I'm not a fan of TI (horrendous linux drivers) so I hope nvidia releases a new GPU soon, but what is the np8662 limit for an GPU upgrade, the size of the card?

    Thank You

The GTX 285M and Mobility 5870 are MXM 3.0B, so the answer is "no".

The MXM 2.1 GTX 280M is basically the end of the line for the M860ETU.

To add to this, the GTX 280M is an upgrade that is not officially supported by resellers of that laptop and is only about 10% faster than the GTX 260M.

The limiting factor of the NP8662 in terms of GPU upgrades is its MXM type, i.e type 2.1 instead of 3.0B which can house more powerful GPU's that are clocked higher by default.

Just a question. What is the TI drivers? Do you mean that there are experimental linux drivers that could be run under windows ?

    1. ATI drivers for linux are much better now. My 4870s are running much better (including CF) than 280s in Ubuntu Karmic.
    2. While you can't upgrade to 5870/285 straightforward, you can try and contact the MXM upgrade org and maybe your 2.1 can be upgraded to allow the 5870/285 support. Worth the shot if you really wanna keep the system for longer.

MXM slot type cannot be upgraded, it is physically a different connector...
