If you're watching films then you won't notice much difference but if you are web browsing then you will have more room on the higher resolution and would notice it

You would notice the difference with both. People will say that it's hard to notice when gaming, but the difference is there.

On a 15 inch I don't think 1900*1200 is a good idea, text is almost unreadable because it's too small and game will either run slow in native resolution you will have to lower them to 1680*1050 which is less nice because it's not the native resolution. I have a 1680*1050 15" and default dpi give me a headache after 1 or 2 hour so I have to raise it to 110% and it's still very small (unhealthy small in my opinion)

On a 17" if you have good eye go for it.

To compare different screen you can use pixel per inch (PPI)
http://members.ping.de/~sven/dpi.html (look at the vaio P lol it has a ridiculous PPI)

See I would feel like I'm not getting the most out of my hardware by settling with a lower resolution, but it's all just a matter of preference really.

Already mentioned but text on a 17" at 1980x1200 is already a wee bit small for older eyes. I have not seen a 15" at that resolution but I am fair sure I would have difficulty reading it. I find it a pain to have to get out my reading glasses to use my laptop, others probably don't mind or have no issue in the first place being in possession of young eyes. I would recommend fiddling around with a laptop running on the resolution you intend to buy before purchase to make sure you find this aspect acceptable to you. Game performance is another issue. Its a lot less work at the lower resolution to render games. Might not matter now but it means you can play at native res for longer as your laptop ages and games get more demanding before you have to lower settings in order to get acceptable frame rate. It wasn't very long ago that upping resolution was a huge gain but this is diminishing (for me at least) as the resolutions seem to be catching up to laptop size screens. Happy hunting.
