    500GB (w/ 4GB SSD Memory) Seagate XT 7200RPM NCQ Hybrid (Serial-ATA II 300 - 32MB Cache)

this is one of my options for the hdd storage of my laptop, is this better than the 500GB 7200RPM (Serial-ATA II 300 - 16MB Cache)

and also what is the 4gb ssd memory? is that included to the 500gb storage or in a separate drive? thanks, im a noob with regards to hdds.

It's a 4G nand memory in the hard drive for often used data.

I don't know about this one, but if you're still in the market to actually buy a hard disk, the single best all-round laptop hard disk I've come across is the Hitachi 7k500. It's a little difficult to come by, but I use one in my laptop, and have put them in a Macbook Pro as well as a Dell that people I live with use. They're super speedy and really efficient.

Of course you don't have to put a hard drive there just because there is a slot.. How big is your hard drive?

Any "often-used" programs will be cached in the SSD, leading to faster loading time when opening things that you frequently use.

It does not appear as a second drive, and exist solely inside the drive hidden out of reach with no access to it if I'm right. However it is definitely faster than the current HDD you have there.

If you have a spare drive, I would recommend SSD + a large 5400RPM storage HDD.

@sacred dreams we pretty much have the same laptop, what cooler do you use? im planning to buy a good one.

in the future maybe i will opt for a 7200rpm 500gb in my spare slot.

My cousin bought a Crucial realSSD 128gb, it's supposed to be the fastest right now. His random 4k read is about 20% faster, which is not really too much of a difference for SSD. The random 4k write is about 4 times that of my intel 120gb though, but you don't really write often. Personally, I don't feel much of a difference though, considering the price difference, intel is good enough IMO.

if you use the same programs over and over then the momentus xt will definitely help. it is also quite a fast mechanical drive esp with the 32mb cache.
the 4gb nand cache may seem too small but it does really make a difference. my boot times have lowered from 50 plus seconds with my old 5400rpm to 20 seconds on the xt with boottimer and 55processes running at startup. i dont think you can get that number with any other mechanical drive, even a desktop 10k rpm.
