Thanks. I know it can be done. I guess my question is can it be done with an MSI card or does it need to be just for sager? I'm thinking any mxm 3.0b card would work. also can the heatsinks from the 665m be reused? This is my brothers cpu and I was hoping my 970m from my GT72 would work to upgrade his as I'm going to attempt to upgrade to a 1070 in the GT72

nope, not all cards work. clevo and MSI would be your best bet, dell cards are another matter altogether though...

I would grab a heatsink from the latest chassis with it too (the p1xxsm series).

I bought a 970m from eurocom and it works great, pretty sure I have the same sager as you too. I had to install their custom BIOS though which was a little sketchy but my laptop didn't brick or anything and I've had 0 problems with it thus far.

The cool thing about them too, was that I originally ordered a 965, they said the testing failed on the last 965 card they had and offered the 970 and to meet me halfway from the price between the 970 and 965 so that was nice

Go for the GTX 1060 from MSI. It runs great in my computer.
Do upgrade the heatsink. I got one from a 980m that came out of a p170SM-A, but it took me a lot to find it, second best option would be the one for a 780m. In Europe Nexoc sells this heat sink for 30 Euros.

1060 isn't an option. I'm upgrading GT72 to a 1070 and giving my 970m to my brother for his NP 9170. The heatsink looks no different then the 980 so just replace thermal pads and repaste.

Yeah, I'm 90% sure the highest you can upgrade on a 9170 is the 980m. I think its due to different architectural differences among the new nvidia 1000 mobile series

Not true, several users(including myself) have had msi made gtx1060 mxm card fitted into our p170em/np9170 and it works.

The case with OP is he's giving his spare 970m pulled from his laptop to his bro, no parts and extra money is wasted here.

I just wanted to note: I don't think a HS upgrade is necessary. It appears to me that there is no notable difference. just a racket to make more money. Sager built for future. MSI however does need different HS

I can tell you that the original heatsink was poorly built and leads to unneccessarilly high tempetures. As an example, @Billy2789 and I have the same computer, and the same card, yet his card runs 15 degrees cooler because of the heatsink difference. When I had my 7970m my card was constantly scratching the high 90's due to this, despite different repasting attempts, eventually leading to its death. (Not that 7970m's are well built to last...)

It's only a suggestion, but if possible, do it.

My brother is telling me he might not want to upgrade. He's scared. I might be selling the 970m if he doesn't want to do it. I don't understand why someone would buy a gaming laptop to watch tv on. just plain silly to me.

Sounds like it could have been an isolated incident/defective heatsink about as much as a design defect. We've seen similar incidents across identical hardware/cooling systems. Still, that's an expensive card to cook...

They actually made the copper tubes thicker, the original ones weren't conductive enought. It's something that many users experimented. Some distributors even sell the heatsink promoting this very fact, that the original doesn't cool appropiately.

So would you agree the original HS from the 665m would be fine for a 970m? new thermal pads and paste of course.

It will work. Just wouldn't be ideal. You can track temps, if you see temps above 80 degrees under stress you might want to consider the upgrade, which isnt expensive, around 30 dollars.

That's the part I find puzzling. if the copper pipes were thicker than it wouldn't fit. The upper and lower come together at fan and the so called new HS for the 980 looks to be the same size as the original. Just saying. If the new ones cool better than I would love to see the difference and would purchase a new pair if its a big increase.

Of course it fits, they only made them a few millimiters thickers, but enough to be more conductive. As well they made some tweaks:

On 780 HS models they unified the difusers. On 880/980 HS models they installed a cover over the (again seperate) difusers. Both increase heat dissipation towards the outside of the computer, previously the dissipation wasn't approppiate and would go back into the chassis.

Again I'm not saying BUY!!! I'm saying, if you see high tempetures, do consider it, it will extend the life of the card.

do you have a link for these at $30? eurocom wants $121 and I don't think that includes shipping.

Sorry! We don't have it anymore. Have you checked RJTech?

Last resort would be eBay or some a private seller online.

    120$!?!?!?! That's theft!

I got a quote for 30€ with a German reseller, if that is convenient to you. Otherwise I know RJ Tech sells them for 60$

    Chech this out:

Differences between hs from p170em and p170sm is about 10-15°.
Temperatures between the p170sm and p370sm are similar, only the p370sm hs dont fit like "PnP" in laptop.
I'm not sure but i think that hs for 8970m it is identical like the one for 980m only with other location and size of thermopads.
And at the end, I bought my 8970m hs from ceg-harcorecustom(de).

Yes, they had to tune it as the cards were getting more power hungry as time was going on.
