Greetings Peeps,
I have been wondering, i have recently upgraded my CPU from an i7 6700k to a wonderful i5 8600k thanks to @dsanke and @DaMafiaGamer and their wonderful Official Coffee lake cpu upgrade thread, and i am extremely thankful for all help to all who have helped me.
However, as i stated in a previous thread that i made on the forum, i am experiencing some major Power throttling issues with the cpu going as low as 3600mhz under max stress on gpu and cpu, and i am nto really looking forward to spending 140 GBP on additional power brick and 2 to 1 adapter.
I found that the only aspect of the mobility that the laptop offerrs to me that i use is an ease of taking it abroad on plane, since i have to travel multiple times a year due to being a student in a foreign country(UK if anyones interested)
So naturally, as a total cheapass as i am ( this laptop being essentially the only luxurious good that i own lol)
i found a way to increase the performance, remove the CPU and gpu bottleneck, and potentially, ear up to 200 gbp while doing so
My plan is to sell my mxm 3.0 GTx 1080, which has programmed in modded bios in it that raises tdp to 245 at max, which would probably help me upsell it to people interested in extreme performance clevo laps, and that would net me around 650-900 gbp depending how lucky i am with my sale
for the money id buy
- an atx power suppyl iwth 2 6 pin or 28 pin connectors,
- a 350-400 gbp gtx 1080ti
-a 40 USD bang good egpu adapter with m.2 connection x4 pcie gen 3 speeds
and a used mxm 3 gpu for around 30-100 gbp , to use when needing the laptop to be portable
Given that im aware that im losing my mobility and have to muck aroudn iwth an additional card, i am not at all bothered by the need to do so and please dont take that into account as a point of vantage to suggest against it
Theoretically i should be able to run the cpu at full thrtottle ocing it to over 4.8 ghz if delidded, instead of the bottlenecked 4.25 i managed to do on a little under 1.08v all the while limitingm y gpu to 1700mhz core
I could also buy an i7 8700k and run it full throttle too![]()
the gtx 1080ti should not be bottlenecked as much by the x4 connetion since its gen3 and only the titav v ( according to gamersnexus's tests) throttles a bit on a pcie 3.0 x8 connection, so x4. while still throttling the 1080ti, shouldnt do it to a great degree
Now, my questions are,
1WIll that work at all?
2will the gtx 1080ti throttle to such levels that it iwil perform below the stock gtx 1080 or even 1070?
Therefore, is there a reason of buying it over a gtx 1080 for that matter?
3. are there any ways to make it work with just the IGpu of the CPU?
4. If not, does it matter hwich mxm 3.0 gpu do i use? or doest it have to stritly be a 10- series card?
In case no mxm gpu's would with the clevo p775 with a coffee lake bios, i assume my only option is the hack at the EC so the motherboard doesnt detect fialure to read the mxm gpu and just starts up with the IGPU instead? If so
Sorry i know its a lot, but its a big decision, and one im potentially very excited for.
Cheers

Remember that's chipset 4x so not quite as good as CPU 4x, also the system will not boot without an mxm gpu as the ECU expects feedback.

it shoulf still however have pretty good performance, given that most reviews ive seen online show thunderbolt 3 which, has less bandwidth than m/2 x4 to perform good enough in most cases, hampering the performance by about 15%, i should stil technically get good performance, and even better cash. ill do more research on the x4 performance,
what bothers me is that ill probably have to find a buyer for my gtx 1080 first.
there is a buy/sell section here, isnt there? |
also does it matter which mxm3.0 card i get? shome are not shaped exactly like my 1080 but appear shorter so maybe theyll still fir? ill give an example. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Nvidia-G...m1ef7887a87:g:O-oAAOSw~LpcmKGC&frcectupt=true

EDIT:
ALso, if i go with the x4 m.2 egpu adapter. will i be able to use the second m.2 slot for nvme ssd or only for an m.2sata ssd?Last edited: Apr 18, 2019 -

Thunderbolt 3 has the same bandwidth but extra latency.
There is a buy/sell section but you don't meet the requirements to post there.
The more devices you place on the chipset the more devices you have fighting for bandwidth be that USB/SATA/PCI-E storage as they all share the same 4x link.
Yes it's important what card you get as it has to be sending the right signals back to the BIOS to at least operate. -
So what mxm 3.0 gpu can/ should i get then?

Tough to say, the heatsink design is different so most wont fit, the most you could do really that's plug and play would be to drop down to a 1060.

It only works with the z170 series chipset systems.
should sell gtx 1080 mxm for V9.5 EXP GDC/ ADT R43 eGpu gtx 1080ti ?
