what does the silent mode of the m860tu do? just slows down the fan so as to reduce noise? nothing else? no downclocking of performance or something?

The CPU is also downclocked. According to CPU-Z, my T9800 goes from 2925Mhz to 1596Mhz when I press the button. The GPU remains at stock speeds.

Kills the fan. Downclock the CPU to ~1.5GHz. Normally, the CPU downclocks when idle at ~1.5GHz but goes up during load (to 2.5GHz in my case). The silent mode keeps the CPU at 1.5GHz, even during load (just made a quick test with wPrime). So internet browsing and word processing is not affected but gaming performance is.
