So the user manual says there is a slot for a sim card in my sager NP 8662.
What purpose does this slot serve? What can I do with my sim card (I do have T-mobile, but no data plans or anything, just calling and text)

Such slots typically are used for people to be able to get a data plan for their notebook - you wouldn't use the same card as your phone, you get a separate one that would be just for data on the go on your notebook. I'm not sure if there is such a slot actually in the NP8662.

is there really? wow i didnt know this, i about about to order a 8662 and this is new to me. where is it located?
-
I think it's manufacturer optional install. In other words, if you did not configure for the card reader when you order you laptop, your laptop don't have it.
-
It is a factory option - you also need to get the mini pci-e HSDPA card for it to work.
-
on the m860tu the slot comes as standard but as theriko stated you need the mini pci-e HSDPA card and as far as i know in the uk they are round about £100 or more and then you also need a contract with a sim card.
much easier to get a usb dongle.

this is great news as i already was planning on buying a express card for my on the road wireless...not all i need is the sim and data plan
-
and the hsdpa mini-pcie card
-
the coverage is only available in certain areas and a lot of america is not covered.

If you live in major cities or within I would say 100miles of major cities I'd say you will get coverage.
