    Hi Everybody!

I live in TURKEY and I bought on 31/03/2007 this computer.

I have a problem with this computer....

I'm tring to use the S/PDIF-OUT jack with my home theater system 5+1 (it has an optical input. It's Sony BDV E490). I try to use this output of my laptop to have digital sound but I couldn't have any sound.

Which cable I should use to have a digital sound from my laptop? (Can I have some pictures?)
    Could you please help me?

What about dvi-hdmi connection? Has it good quality?

    IT's very urgent....
    Thanks a lot

The SPDIF on this laptop is Digital Coaxial, NOT OPTICAL. If your home theater accepts coax spdif then you can use that. I believe that is your only option for digital sound.

I don't have any coax output. Just optical.
What do you think if I convert the signal to optical? Or is better to buy an USB sound card that have optical out?
    What about DVI output?
    Thank you...

as theriko said, unless your sound system accepts the digital coaxial input then you will have to grab a n external sound card with digital optical out, in regards to DVI out, you should be fine outputting up to 1920x1200.

The external USB sound card is a good option. Digital coaxial is believed to have slightly better audio quality though, due to the mild "jitter" effect with TOSLINK cables - though it's so subtle, most probably can't tell the difference between the two in terms of sound reproduction quality.

I would say stick with the digital coaxial, unless you absolutely need to use optical.

    Thank you for the answers.
I think for me the best solution is to buy an Usb sound card. I don't understand why Sony uses so few outputs (just stereo and optical).
Which Usb sound card do you reccomend?

A lot of people recommend the Xonar U3 by Asus. I've never used it personally, but it seems to have mostly positive feedback and isn't terribly expensive.

That and the fact that it does its' job well and takes up very little space.

Though I would also recommend the Vantec Sound card, works remarkably well and is cheaper than the Asus Xonar U3.

I couldn't see the optical out of Asus and I think it will be hard to find Vantec in Turkey. What about S-link (model : SL-U82 ) or Creative? Or something else?

Is there any difference between sound cards regarding optical out?

Not really - the technology is basically the same. Some might brag more about the processing capability behind one manufacturer's component more than another, but I think the differences are moot - if even existent - as far as sound quality goes.

The Asus Xonar U3 uses a 3.5mm to Toslink adapter to use optical out, the same as the optical out on the NP9170.

In regards to optical out, it is a digital signal, so the only difference is how high quality is the sound card itself. I have no experience with S-Link or creative so I cannot comment there.

I contact to Asus Turkey and they guarantee that it has optical output (with connector) and is easy to find also in Turkey. But...I need something else now... Optical switch. Because I have 1 optical in my sound system.
    Do you have any suggestions?

    Thanks a lot...

Not on any manufacturer in particular, no. For electronics suppliers that generally have good deals, you can try etailers such as J&R, Newegg, B&H Photo and Video, Buy.com, TigerDirect, etc., just to name a few.
