I just back to backed my standard matte screen to my brother's standard glossy screen on two 8130s sitting right here in from of me, side by side.

Damn I wish I woulda got the glossy! The whites are so much more "daylight" looking, while the matte is a colder "blue white". The glare is not as bad as you think either. The dark colors are not as noticeable, but only the bight side there is a big difference.

I will probably get used to it down the road, but with a side-by-side comparison...glossy stomps a mudhole!

Take your brother outside and ask him to play games in the sunlight with you.

    There's your revenge! :D

I agree with you on the glossy. Most people here prefer matte, but having owned both types of screens over the years- I still prefer my glossy ones. I don't often play games out in bright sunlight either. ;)

I'm already getting used to the matte now... but let me tell ya, I wish I would have known....

When you have the glossy and the matte screens side by side in person, the glossy stomps the matte!! hands down!

I don't regret getting matte. Four of my previous laptops were glossy and I disliked the fact that I cannot see half of the screen whenever there was a reflection which was too often for my comfort.

Can yall go outside and compare the difference to see how much more reflective? I've always liked glossy better, but been thinking of getting the matte due to everyones comments.

    And tell you how?...

Matte screens are usable in sunlight; glossys are simply impossible.

You could try out a friends matte laptop, but unfortunately there are no words I can use on the forums to explain reflectivity...

If you intend to game at home or inside only glossy is a 100% must because of the way it makes image look so more bright and vibrant. There is not a lot of difference apart from the blacks and whites between the screens themselves but the way your eye can pick them up makes a world of difference IMO.

Chilling in front of the tv and out and about the matte is perfect on my 10 inch netty but for a 1080p 17 inch gaming screen glossy all the way.

Is yours the standard matte screen or 95% gamut version. That does make a difference. The 95% are the ones people are falling in love with

the 95% gamut is more expensive and harder to come by. I believe the standard is the stock display which is 72% gamut 1080p.

Appolloseed, which displays were you comparing? the 72% or 95% or mixed? I think "standard" could very well be different from each person.

Certainly, I love the matte on my netbook for long periods of Football Manager in front of the TV. However if you intend to use it solely as a gaming machine with light everything else glossy is very smart.

I notice that the 95% gamut which I opted for the gloss is not as glossy/shiny/reflective as the older style glossy screens and the reflection apart from on black backgrounds is a lot less these days. That probably didn't make a lot of sense mind but I am British so I can be let off :D

In my previous experience, matte looks better than glossy, all the time. Even in indoors situations you get reflection from indoor lights.

Your screen probably has anti-glare component. It's the best of the 2 worlds, crisp + min reflections. And when it's also a high gamut panel - wowzers! Enjoy!

It's probably because you chose the standard Matte... its a shame those do not have the freaking amazing whites the Matte 3D has (also twice as bright). I'm loving my screen and I also got a fantastic color calibration profile from a guy on this forum.

Man I have to say: "I Will never ever go back to Glossy" even on normal lighting conditions inside my room Matte gives me a much better desktop and Gaming experience ;)

Here is a Small Example of what I mean on the SAME ROOM and SAME Lighting conditions:

You should have gone with the V4 95% gamut matte instead of the V1 60% gamut matte. I just got the V4 (the laptop came with the V1 as yours) and the difference is night and day. This V4 is brighter than any previous glossy screen, colors and contrast are amazing, blacks are really black without the annoying light bleeding, viewing angles are much better and there are no annoying reflections, i can actually work in sunlight. I love this screen, im never going back to glare (or low gamut).

Have you seen the V4 72% gamut matte screen?

If so, how does it compare to your 120hz 3D matte screen?

I'd also like Malibal and/or other resellers with experience to chime in.

    Thank you very much.

Wait till you see the V7 Glossy 95% Gamut.. ;)

I've used both screens and the difference is again night and day. Much better color balance, contrast, brightness.. V.7 is overall a better quality screen it seems. But V.4 is no slouch, it is amazing.

    I thought B173HW01 V.4 is Glossy 90%. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I think the 72% Gamut screen is the B173HW01 V.5. For everyday use, 72% is more than enough. But once you go 90%, you can never go down.

    Yes, I meant the V.5.

I am wondering if there is any discernible difference between the 72% gamut B173HW01 V.5 versus the 120hz 3D matte screen that works only with nVidia cards.

    Thank you.

The 3D 120hz screen is also a matte 72% gamut. Obviously this means both options are 72% gamut matte screens. One is 120hz and can do 3D while the other is 60hz and 2D only.

Is there such a thing? I know I paid extra for the 95% gamut but I am just surprised the difference from the pictures above as mine does not reflect like that but it certainly is glossy.

Here is an image with a light on behind me and the flash set to max.

I know that the Asus glossy screens were appalling and the poster above is comparing the old 2009 Asus screens to the Clevo/Sager ones and they are totally different. Mine says it was made in 2011 so that is not a great comparison above, my G73JH stock 900p sucked. My glossy now is a masterpiece to game on :D

Yes, it does look very similar to mine. There are glossy screens with and without the anti-glare component. If you get one without, you won't be able to work outdoors. And like you said, you still have mild reflections, mostly on a dark background and not too distracting. Means, your screen is most likely treated with an anti-glare component. I didn't believe this until got my edge-to-edge glass torn apart and compared the screen underneath to other glossy panels - night and day.

    Question for resellers -

Is the 90% gamut screen for the 17" Clevos treated with anti-glare technology?

    Thank you

As an owner, I can say the answer to that is NO.

I mean, the lights it reflects aren't as bright as they actually appear to the eye, but it definitely is not to be used in sunlight or with a light shining directly into it.

It certainly isn't as treated as the 15" screen we see in the picture taken above.

Had I not gone with the standard Matte, I wouldve opted for the 90%gamut Matte.
Dont be fooled by the "better" contrasting on glossy screens.
The standard matte is very impressive to say the least.

Also is it just me who doesnt like my blacks to be completely black??
The white on the matte is bluer than the glossy because the glossy white has more yellow in its spectrum. I prefer the "articifial" white on the matte, than the "natural" whites on the glossy.
The matte screen shows more detail while the glossy shows more sharpness.

It can be boiled down to preference, but the MATTE serves more practical uses to me.

Well, if we're comparing the two 95% screens, the spec sheets objectively say that the glossy has a typ ratio of 500:1, to the matte's 400:1. That doesn't mean it always works out that way, of course.

Thats not supposed to always be a good thing.

But it really boils down to preference.

Someone whos using photoshop wont like working with deeper contrasts but someone who frequently watches movies might enjoy it better.

Personally, I dont like "blacker" blacks and false contrast.
For instance when Im gaming, and I see a small figure in the shadows, its easier to see the details when the contrast isnt deeper, say a sniper wearing black, in the shadows, will have more outline because the lighter contrast.

again, you can adjust the settings blah blah, but I dont like the sharpness on glossy as much as others do, and glare is my worst enemy. I even have to turn the lights off in my room when using the MATTE screen, if I see ANY reflection on the screen it throws me off and makes me feel like I have OCD because I would have to adjust positioning etc etc.

I think we are comparing apples to apples.

Well I love golden apples > granny smith. Simple. Its like saying red apples are better for pie and green apples are better for... idk I hate green apples...

I think PNB upgraded my screen to NTSC 95% gamut without telling me!

Atleast, that's what it says on the order specifications on the side of the box my laptop came in; "LCD: T 15.6"(FHD/GT) (NTSC 95%)"

Might explain why it looks so gorgeous.

To confirm, open HWiNFO64, and expand the Monitor section.

It will say AUO B156HW01 V.5, if it's the 95% matte.

Nope, the naming is different for the 17" and the 15".. The 95% matte is AUO B156HW01 V.4, and the glossy is V.7.

And that is the standard screen. The 95% Gamuts are made by AUO.

But gamers burst into flames when out in sunlight, didn't you know that? Now why would you go outside to game?
All joking aside, everyone has their preference in displays. :D I'm currently running a Glossy display on my laptop and I love it. My wife has a Matte display on her laptop and it certainly does have its advantages when the curtains are wide open and the sun is glaring inside the house. But then again, she also prefers sunlight and I like working in the dark.
