i am hoping that someone can help! a few months back i got an error on my pc saying my graphics kernal had crashed! since then i have had lots of lines running vertically down my screen throughout post and boot and the lappy would fail to boot to safe mode or start normally! i took the gpu out and cleaned it and put it back in and now many lines have vanished and computer booted fine! only trouble is that the gpu booted to vga mode and lappy was perfect! i then installed the most recent nvidia drivers and now the laptop will boot to the startup screen and then the screen just dies and goes black!
any help would be great if possible.its a m570TU with 9800M GT.
regards

Dying GPU...

im guessing then that i can just buy a gtx 260/280m and put that in? where can i get these from quite cheap? heh

Had this many times with the vertical lines at boot and can only get into windows by removing nvidia drivers in safe mode. Your card is failing and the solder cracking is probably the issue.
You can bake your GPU which I have done this a few times because of this and my card (9800m gtx) is still working fine at the moment.

You will need to remove the heatsink and the copper holding case. I removed the thermal paste with some rubbing alcohol and bought some more thermal paste and reapplied. -

by the way it has to be MXM 2.1 not 3 -
Thank you for the suggestions guys, I have just gone through all of that and now my Lappy is working again!!! Just waiting for a response in the Alienware forums to what software I can use to test out the GPU to make sure it is functioning properly.
Cheers all -
I hope it works out for ya

like clevo users dont know how to test gpus as well as alienware users?
just try furmark -
Thats cool the method worked for you also and got it working again.
-
I have just run furmark and the GPU hits 98Degrees and then downclocks, i'm guessing this is normal the stress test mode of furmark? I benchmarked 948 on the 9800M GT, is this all pretty normal people? Thank you
Regards -
98C is a little high with that laptop, even with furmark. Maybe you didnt apply the thermal paste correctly? Have ever cleaned the vents for dust? Did the fans spin at max speed?
-
Do you think some more thermal paste will do? Do you know what it should run at just our of curiousity? I will get the card out again and apply some more paste! The fans span up like a good 'un
Regards -
Re applied the paste and now it's running at 91 at the beginning and then after about 5 minutes it reaches 98 and starts downclocking.Im running forceware 260.99 drivers....Im now getting 1373 on the benchmarking

You need to apply paste evenly, and use a somewhat thin layer. Using too much paste can really be more of a problem.
You should order some ramsinks and stick them to your GPU heatsink. Its a very cheap way to keep temps under control and can make up to a 10c difference.
You'll want to check the difference in temps while running with your back cover off as well. If its greatly improved, you will have similar benefit by drilling holes in the plastic.
these are quite good http://cgi.ebay.com/DDR-DDR2-RAM-Co...623?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3ca71f4ecf -
I reckon I used about a pea sized amount of the paste! TBH i didnt use any Arctic Silver or anything such as that! I just asked our service guy if he had any heat sink paste and I used what he supplied. Is arctic silver MUCH better to use or will any paste work just not to such an extent. If I am not EVER going to be playing games but maybe watching the occasional Bluray over the HDMI connector do I really need worry?
Regards -

No, you dont need to worry if you never play games. And yes, arctic silver is much much better.
-
I got the Arctic MX-3 paste after baking my GPU and it runs much cooler than it did with the stock paste.
-

yea, dont get arctic silver because its capacitive, although pretty much no one has confirmed damage with this, its just scary to think about on a GPU where there are tiny resistors around the die.
also mx-3 can sometimes be a better value because its 4g -
Excellent news, may buy some arctic after xmas and redo the heat sinks. May be that I will get Black Ops at some stage
Thank you kindly for all your help!
strange gpu problem! help please!
