when playing bf4 on ultra settings with fans at max speed

i noticed CPU temps going up to 90degrees using openhardwaremonitor,

the laptop is about a week old,

are these temps normal or should I look into getting the machine A/S'd

I don't have that exact model (I have the 377) but that does not sound normal at all. My 4940mx overclocked is in the 70's most of the time in game.

Stock cpu paste? Is it IC diamond since it's SM-A version?

Yeah man that doesn't sound right. Not by a long shot. Especially not with the fans running at 100%

Try a reapplication of your TIM and see what that does for ya.

That sounds perfectly normal for my environment. He's probably got vsync off.

Here's what OP, I want you to take 4 blocks of 2-ply toilet paper. Fold it squarely until it's a square barely bigger than one of the rubber feet on your laptop. Do this three more times. Put one square under each of the four rubber feet on your machine. If your temps cross 80 degrees in this situation, you might need some new thermal paste indeed. Reapplying IC Diamond or using Arctic Céramique 2 would be okay, but for best results a proper application of Coolaboratory Liquid Ultra is the way to go.

If temps STILL stay high, then maybe your heatsink is bad and you should ask for an RMA.

Remember BF4 is very taxing on the CPU, especially with 980M sli.

It is a bit hot though so check your paste job.

Make sure the bottom of the computer has good clearance as well for good air flow. You can prop up the back of the computer an inch or so and see if that helps. People often suggest soda bottle caps.

It's a little warm, but if you're using ultra spec + unlocked FPS with 980Ms, that seems about right. BF4 is indeed a CPU toasting simulator.

I would repaste with IC Diamond... A good thermal paste can make a large difference.. I replaced my Arctic Cooling MX-4 paste with IC Diamond and now I can OC my CPU even more... Before I used to hit 95C++ with 3940XM at 3.8GHz in BF4... Now I hit 80-85C tops and have my 3940XM at 4.0GHz in BF4...

Would like to know whether I should be using a "Pea" or "Line" method of application for IC Diamond 7, I've just applied using the line method and have not noticed much in the way of temperature change.

    Cheers

Line method is best. If ICD is not improving your temperatures, then you need to go Liquid Metal. But again, propping up the machine and using max fans is the only way you're dropping those temps if your FPS is not capped at 60. If you cap it at 60 or force a GPU bottleneck (ultra preset, 200% resolution scale, etc) then your CPU temps will fall. Even capping at 125 is still hot as hell. But thanks to CLU I don't even pass 80 at 3.8GHz (and my CPU is a bad silicon lottery one)
