    so im sitting on newegg and they dont have the seagate 500GB 7200RPM HDs in and havent for months so im wondering if im going to notice a huge difference in speed if i go [200GB 7200RPM] to [500GB 5400RPM] drive
    i run:
    UGNX5
    photoshop cs4
    fruity loops
    autocad
    matlab
    office etc

    i think im getting the WD 500GB 5400RPM HD

    because it has better reviews and i had a seagate that died one time

    5K500 is probably faster by couple seconds.

    The 200GB 7200RPM drive is 2 generations old vs. current generation 5400RPM drive. Even in desktops, current 7200RPM drives beat out 2 generation old 10000RPM Raptor.

    The new gen of 5400rpms (320GB and above) are comparable speeds to the old gen 7200rpms (250GB and less)

    A 500GB 2.5" hard drive @ 5400RPM wouldn't be slower than a 200GB 2.5" hard drive @ 7200RPM because the there are only 2 platters in boththe 500 and the 200, so overall you'll get around the same speed on either one.

    Arent you glad the seagate 7200.4 500gb 7200rpm drive is not in stock.
    The Hitachi 5K500.B is actually faster than the 7200.4 in real life performance
    The Hitachi 5K500.B has the lowest power consumption in its class and it is the fastest 500gb 5400rpm drive, outpacing all current 500gb 7200rpm drives on the market
    The WD5000BEVT is a bit slower than the 5K500.B but the differences are not so noticeable in real life usage
