can the sager 8662's gpu (260m) be upgraded to say the 280 at least?
i was thinking of getting a 5797 but its quite bulky and the 280gx may be a bit too overpowered for the kinds of strategy games i play now.
was thinking of getting the 8662 instead, but i want a laptop with a certain amount of future proofing and upgradability.

    what are your thoughts guys?

Doubtful. The power and heat compensation required for this card are too high. Of course, I know that still means someone will try it out.

Be thankful, the 260M is a brilliant card. and should provide good future-proofing for at least a couple of years. You can't expect much more. :)

i'm thinking about this. on top of possible overheating (in fact, for it looks 10W only - not big deal) it will be necessary to modify Phoenix BIOS. this is a tricky exercise, but i'm thinking about this now. i don't think there will be official support for this kind of updrage (mainly due to marketing issues)...

yes i tend to agree more with your point . it would be more of a marketing issue than anything else. if they allowed it then there would really be nothing but screen size that would seperate it from the 5797

I expect the GTX 280M to drop in and work, just like the 9800M GTX, but I also expect it to constantly overheat, just like the 9800M GTX.

lol the 280 at least? isn't it the best mobile card in the nvidia lines :p

The 280 will never go in a M860Tu that's for sure, but maybe next gen cards, who knows. Still, the GTX 260M should last you at least 2 years of solid gaming I think.

Btw, does the fan come with the GTX 280M, or are you stuck with the stock one? If so, yeah I guess the 280 would overheat

what do you mean last 2 years? is that how long before it won't be able to handle current games? also can you expect to get at least 4 years out of the NP 8662?

he means play them a good settings with good FPS.

In the NP5797, the GTX 280m is under a heatsink that directs it to a fan. It's not physically "under" any fan.

I can't see the NP8662 lasting that long in terms of gaming performance, especially if it is just a Core 2 Duo. I think a Quad Core will last longer, for example the 2.26 Ghz Q9100 paired with 4GB RAM and a GTX 260M.

Either way, it is subjective since it depends on what you consider acceptable resolutions, settings etc.

In terms of build quality, I can see it lasting a few years at least.

Well currently I think the safest 15.4 laptop to get for future proofness is the Np8662 I guess, since it is the fastest (I think?). The only down would maybe be the duo.. but, at least for games, I think it'll be ok for a while

A fast Core 2 Duo is not going to be underperforming in the next two years. By the time it does, you can always buy whatever is the fastest quad that had been released. Even by the end of this year, there will be faster non-extreme mobile Core 2 Quads than the Q9100.
