    hey guys
i own the clevo M860etu/sager NP8662 and have had it for around three months during that time the hottest the GPU has reached was 81 degrees after 3+hr gaming session, Ive noticed over the last few days my GPU has dramatically increased to 90+ degrees the hottest being 91 yesterday, today i gamed for around 35 minutes then decided to check my temps and noticed that the GPU had crept up to close to 90 again, i cleaned the vents out earlier today and was hoping that would help...... do you think this is something i should be concerned about?, and if so what can i do about it?
oh i use a notebook cooler at all times..and the ambient room temperature is around 25 degrees.heres a screenshot

thanks for any suggestions and help.

i answered the cooler question in my first post (YES) and also those temps were not obtained after three hours gaming but 35 minutes, my gpu is the GTX260m, i realize that those temps are not extreme but they are hot especially considering over the past few months the hottest it reached was 81.......after three hours gaming.

Just out of sheer curiosity: have you cleaned the dust out with some compressed air, made sure the BIOS is up to date, etc. This is odd b/c I play NFS:C and NFS :prostreet and I rarely break 70c (The highest I got is 72c) even after 3 to 4 hours of play with the settings up. It idles at about 38c though, and I don't use a cooler. (I only ask as you and I have the same setup barring the HDD and RAM.) Just wondering, I don't think it's a bad card though.... the card seems to work ok.

and i dont think there is a new bios update for our machine, but even if there was i cant see why not having the latest bios would suddenly change the temps by over 10 degrees, its random i just played for another hour and the temps didnt get past 78 degrees so im not sure whats going on, maybe the game is extra demaining or something.

You cleaned the vents, but you need to take off the panel to clean the dust out of the fan itself.

Okay, then it's down to checking the heatssink and replacing the GPU's thermal paste.

    @OP
I have had the M860TU for one year now and, although it can get a bit warm (as you are experiencing), never I have thought it reaches "extreme" temperatures. 91ºC is, by no means, extremely hot.

Regarding the temp icrease you seem to have noticed... this might be related to the games you have been playing on it. Different games raise the temp of your GPU to different temperatures. Some games won't push my GPU over 82ºC, others will make it go over the 91-93ºC. But after one year like this, it still didn't give me any problem at all.

Another thing I've noticed is that playing at 1280x800 cuts the temp a lot. Given I am no resolution freak, and I prefer to turn up details, AA, etc, it works great for me.

Bottom line... your GPU temps are fine and you shouldn't be very concearned with it. I think the temp difference you've noticed has to do with different software you are running.

Good luck with enjoying your laptop.

ok thanks for that what should i be checking with the heatsinks?

cheers for the piece of mind, i dont think i could drop the res down to 1280x800, i love the res of 1680x1050 and would much rather have it at that res and turn AA off, but it could be as you state a software thing, ive been playing unreal tournament 3 recently and thats the game that it has increased temps on, my friend also said he experienced increased temps with this game as well.
hopefully thats what it is, im travelling back to the west at the end of the year and plan on doing some copper mod etc at that time...hopefully the temps dont increase more than they have before then.

If you payed for a WXSGA screen, you should be able to use it without fearing system overheat. I suggest, as Kevin did, to re-apply thermal paste and see if it works.

You just have to remove the heatsink, remove the GPU (its easier that way), clean the GPU die, reapply thermal paste, put the GPU back in and then the heatsink, making sure you apply a lot of pressure. You MAY have to do the same with the CPU, though, but I'm not sure. I would do it anyways.

Urm... So again, what cooler do you have?

Those are not the temperatures you should be getting with a cooler running. You might have one that's not suitable for your notebook... ?

Well the notebook cooler is the notepal infinite, for the past three or so months this cooler has helped with keeping the machine at very good temps, just to restate these temps have only just started happening and only sometimes, i just played two hours of CoH and the max temp of the gpu was 76degrees.
i will reapply thermal paste as soon as it arrives.

I get 87 deg with fan speeds on max here no cooler when I play Unreal Tournament 3, but my ambient temps are like 36 deg Celcius so that may be the cause. But of course new software likes to tax cards. First Person Shooters do the most damage, Racing games I'd say do the next (well only racing game I tried was NFS Shift, but that's at 1920x1200 x2AA x16AS filtering so...)
But you might try checking that. One of the screws in one of the fans I got bent the groove so it's hard for me to get it out, if I do get it out I'm not putting it back in, I'll take one of the screws from the fan that has 4 screws in it. It doesn't need all 4 screws =)

I just checked your temp window, and if you got a lot cooler temps than that I'd say something was amiss, but when i turn on UT3 and NFS Shift and COD4 for 10 mins to check temps they usually hit the 80s in that space of time. I wouldn't worry about the temps being too high, though i don't cross 87 deg 89-91 isn't that much higher.

I think if you're really worried about it (and if you honestly got 10 deg and more less than the current 89-91), then try reapplying the thermal paste. There's a new one that came out supposed to be a lot better than Arctic Silver 5, though I don't remember the name, you could probably try that. But otherwise don't worry about it, the humidity of the area might have increased and higher humidity means more water particles around the equipment to heat up which means higher heat. Just like when it rains here even if it seems cool my machine could heat up more than when it's blazing sun.

But otherwise don't pull out your hair if you know what I mean. Your cards live =)

If you get a drop in gaming performance or more crashes, then start to panic o_O
