Vista x64 is the best overall version to go with when using Vista.

XP 32-bit is the best to go if you want best overall compatibility.

How much RAM do you have? I would likely stick with the Vista x64 in that system, especially if you have 4GB of RAM.

    thats true.

Vista is good if you have 2GB+ of RAM.

XP is awesome with 2GB of RAM.

if you have x64, keep it, especially if you have 4gb of ram already. if you don't already have 4gb of ram and have x64, get 4gb of ram :D

I use vista 64, and i have had essentially no compatibility issues with it. the only thing that did not work was mcaffe...and i can more than happily live without that.

I'm actually surprised Vista is getting a fair hand here, what with all the anti-Vista sentiment circulating the interwebs these days...

My experience with Vista Ultimate 64bit is good, but there are definitely some caveats. 64bit drivers seem to be less available than 32bit ones. However if your system CAME with Vista 64, one would assume drivers wouldn't be an issue. Of course even then, you may be stuck with beta drivers which may or may not ever get updates. Also, some programs simply don't like Vista 64- I'm looking at you Rhapsody. Apparently McAfee doesn't play nice either. I use Kaspersky and have had no problems. Norton usually eats up a lot of system resources. All in all, unless you have 4GB of RAM, Vista 64 won't offer you much more than a 32bit system.

If you have 3GB of RAM, Vista 32 will work great. If you have 2GB and want to squeeze as much performace out of your rig as possible, you may want to use XP Pro 32bit.

I prefer Vista to XP personally as it is much more stable and much more powerful as well as much more aesthetically pleasing. One thing I might add is that Vista Home Premium has better media functionality than Business (if I remember right). I can't stand not having every last function, bell and whistle, so I went with Ultimate.

I've tried vista 64 and xp 32 bit both on my new 5793 and i like Vista better. There is a slight probably noticeable decrease in performance game wise. The only noticeable difference would be your benchmarks which do not really matter(i.e 3dmark)

For the best free AntiVirus and Firewalls, I highly recommend:
Firewall: Comodo Pro (its free, its powerful)
Antivirus: avast! or AVG (they are free, they do the job)
Spyware/malware remover: Spybot and Lavasoft Ad-Aware (free and manually used, use more than one since on cannot find everything)
.... also get HiJackThis for a tool that can clean up startup protocols and programs.
