Would anyone know if there will a BIOS update to support 16GB single sodimm stick that have started to be available this year:
DRAM Memory Modules | 16 Gigabyte DDR3 unbuffered DIMMs | Intelligent Memory

By default it's not recognized at the boot on most Intel processors without a BIOS update as far as I understood.

(the idea behind this question is to know if/when I could get a 13" form factor laptop with 32GB of memory + quad core i7 => this memory in my case is not particularly related to gaming but work instead)

    Thanks !
    Philippe.

Wow those are the first I've seen of those. From what I understand the CPU wont recognize it regardless of the BIOS.

Interested to see pricing on those.

I have found a couple of web sites describing that the problem can be solved via BIOS updated assuming there was a will to do it:
I'M Intelligent Memory 8 Gigabit DDR3 and 16 GB Modules
"Notebook, PC and motherboard manufacturers such as HP, Lenovo, Apple, Dell or others may contact their Intel field representative to push and request a change of Intel's POR to support the new memory through future BIOS/MRC updates. End-Customer may contact their board-manufacturers customer-support to ask for compatibility of the memories. I'M is also working with Intel to address this gap."

    And here:
    16GB DDR3 UDIMMs and SO-DIMMs - MacRumors Forums
"From a hardware-point of view, there is no problem at all. The Memory Reference Code in the BIOS is the only limiting factor currently.
We hope that Apple or Intel take action and release an updated BIOS, as we see a fairly high demand from the Apple community."

Apple has support for the 16GB ECC modules in the Mac Pro. HOWEVER we keep getting word that no current models will support them, and as long as the memory is soldered on we wont see them :(

I know of a Clevo model with the Xeon desktop CPU using this memory but believe it is a test model.

Intel have stated it is an issue with their on die memory controller and is the hardware itself that has problems.

To be able to use 16GB Single SODIMM stick, I think you need to have 5th gen with Intel i3 i5 i7 processors. Mem-Store is selling it on ebay.
