I have a problem with my w230st, i swapped out the cpu i5 4200m with a i7 4800mq and it's stopped working, only the power button lights up as well as the keyboard, nothing else.

I put the old cpu back in and still nothing, took out all the other components and still nothing :(

is my laptop now dead for some reason? rather pissed off now... :(

im no expert with cpu's but it does sound like youve bricked it especially as the original cpu doesnt work either.
no idea what it could be but if you was under warranty you wont be now.

Did you apply new thermal paste when you swapped CPUs? Did you use a non-conductive paste?

Did you wear an anti static wristband or keep yourself grounded? Is the latch for the cpu fully tightened?

almost the same as a EC reset. remove battery and mains and press power button for 20 seconds.
ive never heard of the pressing power button 10 times though but i guess as it was ibm tech they wanted to go that little bit further :)

does that mean you got it working again or had the paste on the pins shorted it out.

Does it react without a cpu installed?

You may just have to send it back to your original reseller. Since it may have been caused by during the CPU swap they may not cover it but at least would be able to get it up and running again.

the laptop is past the sending back time, but I can return the processor.

I've ordered a new machine from mysn. (never used them before, but they were the best i could find here)

at least the other components still work, (the ones i could test)

500gb ssd - tested in desktop
120gb msata - tested in enclosure
480gb msata - tested in enclosure

    16gb ram
    intel 7260
