Finally I have made up my mind and will be buying this laptop.I am from India and my relative will buy it and bring it when he will be coming at the end of this month.I hope ni can get this laptop mid of july if i i order it within 2-3days but before that i need some of help.

I am not able to decide if i should buy barebone from xoptic.com for 654 and add other items myself from newegg or just buy the complete system from
same vendor. So i need ur kind help.

1.when vendor says 2048[1 SODIMMS] AND 2048[2 SODIMMS] about ddrRAM does it mean that one with 1 SODIIMS will be 1x2GB stick and one with 2

    SODIMMS is 2x1GB?

2.what is IntelĀ® Robson Turbo Memory, should i go for it?

3.Where should i buy optical drive with dual layer feature?Any good alternative to newegg?

    4.If i go for barebone system,what should i buy from here... [cardbus adapter or pcmcia adapter}
and also what for internal bluetooth?

5.I will also be adding one stick of 2gb RAM,Intel C2D7300 and 160GB 5400RPM HDD.Any suggestion regarding these items and reputed online vendor apart from newegg?

    Thanx in advance...

1 SODIMM just means its 2 GB on one stick. This leave you with another slot available for RAM, which is nice should you decide to aftermarket upgrade; then you won't be wasting a stick. Turbo Memory, from what I've read, has little effect if you have a good amount of RAM, and its better to get RAM than the turbo. Pass on it if you need to save money.

Buying the barebones package depends on your level of expertise. Are you comfortable putting the parts in, which is a bit more difficult than doing a similar thing on desktops?

I agree, get the turbo mem if the cost isnt an issue, otherwise with 4gig of ram you probably wont get much out of it anyway.

Otherwise your build looks solid. Online vendors that carry it (and pop in here) are powernotebooks.com and xoticpc.com . Xotic is seling the barebones also. There are other vendors as well that are likely good too, these are 2 that I know something of.

RSJ, you do realize that the warranty for a Compal bought in the US is of limited value outside the US, na? From what I understand, if your computer breaks while you are outside the US, they will cover the repair but the repair has to be done in the US and you have to pay shipping both ways yourself in that case. In the end, shipping costs effectively make the warranty inapplicable. (Well, from Canada it might work okay but not from India.)

There's no Compal distributor in or near India??

Regarding the parts to add to a barebones. Again, is there no reseller in India that could sell you the parts for cheaper than the US?

We dont have any compal/sager distributor in India and notebook with similar specs will be atleast 50-75% costly.

in the last 3-4yrs i have got two video cards,dual-layer dvd writer, one ddrram stick from newegg through my relatives and so far everything worked fine out of the box.I am hoping same with this notebook.I have to admit If anything happens i do have to wait longer to send it back to states as someone may not be going there soon.
Moreover my relative there will use it for a month.

    I have selected intel c2d700,160gb 5400rpm hdd,2gb ram,wxga screen,dual-layer dvd-rw,wireless networking with bluetooth,window vista home premimum.

So my most imp question still remain unanswered, should i build it myself[relative will do it for me he has fair bit of knowledge of computers] or buy the complete package? If vendors are using good quality HDD and RAM sticks then i can consider buying whole notebook.

And if i buy in parts can someone post me link for...[apart from newegg]
    1.above said HDD
    2.DL DVD-RW
3.alternative to intel bulit in wireless 802.11 a/g/n and internal bluetooth2.0+EDR. Is this thing what i am looking for.Sorry guys this will be my 1st NB so not enough info i know abt.

I will most probably be buying from powernotebooks or xotic so comments of their rep would be highly appreciated.

Not too sure about all your parts and stuff, but you can try emailing the reps from the powernotebooks and xotic directly to get a speedy response as opposed to hoping they see your thread here :)
