Well, when I was reading the sager 9280 thread, I wonder if sager will released a new laptop with core i5. Because of cheaper cost, sager can sell more machine, but it may affect the sale of 9280. I wonder if someone know anything about this?
    So what do you think?

I don't think it makes sense for Clevo to make an i5 version of the D900F since Clarksfield is around the corner (before the end of the year from what i read on bit-tech)

It would be a good idea, if the Core i5 and i7 were compatible with the same motherboards, but since this isn't the case, I think it's infeasible to expect Clevo to manufacture(the company it's really up to..) another high-end machine to accommodate the i5 platform. I'd phase out the i7 notebook completely.

Even then, the mobile i5 looks kinda lame. The clocks are too low, and the prices are ridiculous.

core i5 used different chipset and socket, therefore a new motherboard must be designed.
core i5 is smaller than core i7 in person, and ... cheaper.

Core i5 is the new entry level chip. Kinda like a Celeron, but not as neutered.

According to Wiki-p, Lynnfield (Core i5) and Clarrksfield (mobile Core) are scheduled to come out in Q3 this year.

From what I read, I5 is basically i7 with crippled QPI. So the performance loss from going to i5 wouldn't be much.
However, if it's true that Intel decided to get rid of all the current i7 except the 975 (L ink here). an i5 version of the D900f would be great and hopefully, the reduced tdp will make it possible to make SLi possible.

It makes sense to offer a lesser version (hence, "i5,") of the iCore technology to offer cheaper parts.

Crippled QPI and 2 memory channels vs. 3.

Intel will not only keep the 975 part, but offer their 6-core state of the art part for 1366 only.

Basically, Intel is creating a true, cheaper, more affordable middle and low end with the i5. But their creme de la creme chips will still be the i7 at the top of the heap.

Will people take i5's and overclock 'em and get similar performance in some cases? Yes, this has happened many times in Intel history. Remember when the original Celeron 300a came out and was easily OC'able to 450 and was on par with their top dog Pentium II 450? The i5 is geared towards cost not only with the chip but with a cheaper chipset (P55).

If I were to go the cheaper route with i5, I would just wait for the mobile versions (Clarksfield in particular, since it is 4-core) and go from there with the mobile CPU extras and some serious SLI/Xfire love.

Like the 9262, the 9280 is for the top dog, price doesn't matter, price/performance be danged, current latest/greatest i7 out there, even if at the end of the day that's a few percentage points or the neutered LGA-1156 chips still have some bark and bite.

It will be interesting to see not only what OC options are available to extreme chips on the 9280, but with the d0 stepping, what juice can be squeezed out of them.

Read this article over @ Anand's:

    http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=3570&p=1

And read the final word section in particular.

Here is a quote from Anand and the Lynnfield (i5) preview:

"Take the Core i7, shave off one memory controller and replace the high bandwidth QPI link with Intel’s slower DMI and you’ve got the makings of a (more) mainstream Nehalem"

Bang/Buck, i5 aka LGA-1156 is where it will be. Absolute top dog performance and Intel's flagship? Still the i7 aka LGA-1366.

At first, I thought Clarksfield will be fine. However, after looking at the wiki about Clarksfield (I know i can't trust wiki 100%, but say if it's true), I changed my mind. 2.00Ghz for 1k. No thanks.

    Then you go either top tog i7 (9280) or get a wicked Core2Quad l(9262) or Core2Quad Mobile (APM17x, W90Vp, M98)

    Plenty of options.

is that possible if Clevo redesign the D900F to work with Core i5, we are possible can have SLI? Since core i5 requires less power than core i7 so that more power left for the graphic card.

Yes, it is possible if they redesign it around the i5 and save the ~35W (95W TDP) and accompanying heat, they could possibly go SLI.

But it would be an entire redesign (basically starting from the d90xc again, I would guess) so I would think it unlikely anytime soon

I doubt that Clevo would release a Core i5 Laptop, personally.

There is too much work involved, and the price difference would be minimal against the D900F.

true but I heard rumors that Intel will outphased all the core i7 version besides CoreI7 extreme version
If that is going to happen, D900F will be suffered since not every one are willing to buy the core i7 extreme.

Not just rumors anymore, Intel is really going to phase them out in favor of their new 32nm Nehalem architecture.

    Bad timing, Clevo, I guess.

Well, you will have 920/940/950/965/975 chips and the 6-core i7 is LGA-1366 only, so the D900F will always be top dawg in regards to chip choices.

The i5's are starting low and staying low and will scale up from there. They will eventually reach i7 speeds, but not anytime soon and they are still neutered a bit. They are really banking on revving up single and dual cores

On the other hand, the TDP is much more conducive for a laptop, as Clarksdale is looking to initially be a big snorefest and won't even really be on par with the Q9100/QX9300 chips out there IMHO (IE Clarksdale Quad Core Extreme = 2ghz? zzzzzzzz)

    Who say that?
Intel Lynnfield 2.80GHz which have the same price of I7-920 actually outperform I7-920 in many tasks.

I was just speaking about Clarksfield for Notebooks, the clock speeds are too low, but I have a feeling that the newer architecture will be on par with Nehalem or better, just like Pentium IV was to Core 2.

Wow, that is very nice, I guess that I will delay my computer's building time to make room for Lynnfield, too.

Clevo should make a D901F that supports Lynnfield and SLi / Crossfire.

No problem, my posts are confusing even for me! Hah.

Clevo would make the D901C what it was meant to be if they released a D901F with Lynnfield and SLi / Crossfire, and I am sure that many people would buy it.

For the small to large (depending on situation and clocks) trade off in performance (No matter how you put it, the i7 is better than the i5 even if by a minuscule amount in some cases, larger in others), the smaller TDP and heat would allow an SLI rig if Clevo wanted a gaming rig for the 17" market.

But then for gaming, the Core 2 Quad/Duo's have been on par, if not better, than the i7 for many gaming scenarios or the performance gains haven't been awe inspiring by the i7 for gaming, which is what such a rig would be targeting and you still have the 18.4" M98 monster which is a SLI Core 2 power house.

So then you contend with a 95W TDP (i5) vs. a 45W TDP (Core 2) or see where Clarksdale (I'm seriously underwhelmed by the initial offerings) will place. You even have to see where the 3ghz clocked LGA-775 Core 2's in the SLI 9262's place performance wise for gaming vs other rigs.

For now, I think Clevo is playing it right with the M98U 18.4" as the media/gaming powerhouse and the 17" D900F for the casual/non-gamer who wants cutting edge CPU performance.

Neat post, electrosoft, you have a really good point with using i5 to pair the D900F with SLi, but now that I think about it, that would defeat the purpose of having the M980NU...
