xotic skinning

Hi, when I order my 570 whenever it gets refreshed, I want to add some customization. Since painting is an extra bundle that I can't afford, skinning seems pretty cool. Since my eyes are on xotic right now, I am curious about a few things:
1. How long would the skinning delay the order (I need it before august 15)
2. hows the quality and stuff, would be nice if someone had an example.
3. What are the advantages of xotic doing the skinning then doing it myself by ordering from decal girl or w/e.

Also, here is my current design for the skin. I'm a beginner at photoshop and have no designing experience what so ever, so I'm desperate for any suggestions, comments, and insults if constructive.

Not too bad a logo. Look pretty cool. Not sure about the text at the bottom though. I like the brushed metal look. You know what would do it? Flashing neon lights!

yeah, since the 9800gtx is kinda variable right now since theres not info on if its going to come out with the 570tu or not, I'm leaving it like that because its easier to change.
lol, not sure about the neon lights since I don't want to alienware my lappy.

 

Haha of course. Sometimes I wish I had some chassis eye candy to go with my video power when I show it off at work! How about flashing 1w LEDs?

 

Well There might be some difficulty getting it by the 15th. If everything is on schedule and Montevina is Released by July 15th Sager and its resellers should be taking its pre orders for the 5796 about a week or two after the release date. Then building should take about a week. So already there you are looking at 1st 2nd week of august for the 5796. It is then shipped to Xotic where I think they take about 13 days i think is what i read to skin and then ship it you. So August 15th would be cutting it REALLY REALLY close with skin. Without the skin it should be their by the 15th. Best bet would be to order the laptop and then send it in for skinning when you have the time.

 

hmm... that might not be such a bad idea, I have some leds around... though I wouldn't know how to integrate it into the power source and stuff.... would be a nice experiment to try.

aw... thats some bad news for me. I thought the only worry I would have would be if the 9800gtx would come out at launch.... Yeah, I would say intel really screwed themselves over on the delay as the entry college market is one of the biggest selling sessions in the year....

I recall someone saying they got their laptop in 4 days with 2 day air shipping, so maybe only 2 days to build? 13 days just for a skin.... kinda sucks.... I would think it would take a few hours... if not a day or two...
I know paladin said somewhere they would start taking pre orders on the 15th of july.... but who knows when you start getting the parts.... TOO MANY VARIABLES. Going to make my head explode. lol.

Anyways, thats why I'm asking about what makes xotics skinning better then doing it myself. If the difference is negligible, then idk... I do have to confess that I suck at sticking things on. I recently messed up my phone's screen protector....

 

I would think that since this a new system they would require 2 days to build and a few more days for burn in testing. I got my laptop in 4 days, 3 days build/test next day airsaver, but they have been making the 5793 for quite some time now.

Would probably be best to contact Xotic directly and ask them for the time frame for skinning a laptop.

 

i suggest not to use the body text at the bottom because it doesnt match with ur logo...
i think ur logo is too big...
hmm, about the name tag ? dont use script and i think its better if u use simpler font like san-serifs.
if u wanna use the kanji characters, how bout if u put it on the bottom-corner?
and make sure that you dont over-design it, the simpler the better...

but that's for me...

sujinge, what is the purpose for the skinning? That may help giving proper advice. Your design says "Jin Corp". Are you in business for real (or is this just fantasy)? Providing services of some sort?

 

Yeah, I'm probably going to have to contact xotic for the final info, but I'm mainly interested in if anyone else got skinning with xotic and if theres any advantage with doing it with them then doing it by myself. And also about the quality of their stuff, which I'm sure is top noch, but I just want to make sure.

As for the purpose of this.... well I'm still in school. Hopefully get an MBA in a few years... so its a "fantasy" business? I have sold a few custom PCs that I built so... it would be nice to expand that and earn some pocket money. lol. Not sure how many people whould want a PC in school though.... w/e

Anyways, the design was going for a kinda matalic look. The pic is kinda low res but the background is a brushed metal feel, or at least I think it is, and so the bottem words are also metalic but with that nice reflexive look. So I think the words go nicely along the background.

This could probably be treated as a giant name tag for my laptop since the "kanji" (its chinese, but since kanji is technically old chinese words... w/e I digress too much sorry.) is my name and is the center piece of this design. If I was to make it smaller and move it to the side, what would you suggest I put in the center?
More suggestions are welcome. Especially on adding more color. It seems kinda bland...

BTW, I think the design looks good. Did you notice you listed the hard drive as a "5600" RPM?

 

Yeah, but since I've got atleast half a month to go before making any purchasing desicions, I thought I should gather some info here. but 3-7 days might be cutting stuff a bit too close... and I suppose you'll be expecting a small surge of orders since it is a new system and stuff...?

開始我讀 "golden spear". 後來我懂了這個漢字是你的名字. Ok, enough broken Mandarin. It might not be a bad idea to embed contact information into that design. You might want to register a domain name and fix a permanent email address for yourself. Then you can have that in the design. In effect, it would turn your laptop into a giant business card. Putting in a phone number is a bit risky because you can move and have to change number but a domain name can be permanent.

 

i think u can try to make the yinyang logo small and put it on top. change the color too, black and white maybe?!
about the kanji nametag, if u wanna put it on the center, dont make it too big.
and the background with lens flare? i dont think it works.
try another texture or color combination?

As of right now, I'm thinking about maybe scraping the entire yin yang thing... its a bit too cliched. But for the black and white thing... and less kanji...and less background....



the only thing now is that its a bit too plain.... I want to make it all nice and "flashy?" to stand out and stuff. idk, I'm bad at the aesthetics thing.... thats why I'm desperate for any comments or suggestions.

 

You you mentioned the possibility of having a business, I would just be careful about how a spear is going to be perceived. Because I'm assuming you'd use your laptop for business.

You might want to replace the yin yang with another Chinese visual motif but one less popular. Chinese arts are not my focus I'm afraid so I don't have any great idea. I definitely would reintroduce colors but at the same time try to keep the color scheme simple and aim for readability, in the sense that you don't want people to have to decode the design. I asked around, and as of now, the only sorta idea I'm getting is a coin... which would probably imply I'm cheap or something. I'm trying to do some research on "chinese symbols" but almost all the stuff I'm getting are characters stuff that I don't need....
are you just talking about the last line being not clear or the entire specs section because the last line is not finished since I'm not sure if the 9800 is coming out on the 14th. Tho the new tobisha thing does have 9800gtx and it is coming out on 14th....

 

I think this symbol is better for a restaurant. The meaning of golden spear is differ in chinese.

Well, first of all, 金戈 is his name so it is not like it is really a matter of choice. Also, I think 金戈 is fairly straightforward for "golden spear" but then again there is a slight ambiguity as to whether the spear is just golden color or actually made of gold. (But is there not the same ambiguity in English: golden can mean "made of gold" or just "gold colored", no?) In Mandarin, it think it would be possible to specify 金色的戈 to say "gold colored spear". I don't have the vocabulary to know how to say "spear made of gold".
