The surface of the die is made of an acrylic silicon. I know I'm sleepy now, but what the hell ever made you think that the surface was made of metal? The first thing that should come to your mind is electrical conductivity. The surface, obviously, serves as a medium for attaining the maximum contact area with a heatsink cold plate, and to protect the core itself, which looks like Blacky's avatar. You would need to nick the die pretty damn hard in order to expose the inner substrate.

Then I guess this is not of a major concern if I'm getting the same temps as my 1st CPU was producing back then. -
My 2 cents regarding the ghosting issue mentioned in the last couple of pages: my W860 with a FHD screen does not have that kind of green trail of the mouse; of course there is some ghosting but nothing like that; I don't know how it looks in reality but in the youtube movie it looked horrible. Not one of the notebooks or LCD's I owned showed that kind of trails; I even started up my 14 years old Toshiba Tecra 500CDT ( now that's a real machine for you ) and the LCD has noticeable black to white ghosting, but the trail is white, not green, and not nearly as bad.
edit: OK thinking about the difference between human eye and a camera, I tried to make a movie using my phone 3 Megapixel camera ( may try someting better later ). The result is worse than what V posted on youtube ! The trailing is HORRIBLE, but to my eyes is almost unnoticeable. I think the framerate of the camera is lower than the LCD ( 24 fps compared to 60 "fps" ) and then if you move the mouse quickly you should have at least 60/24 = 2.5 LCD images superimposed on one camera image = HORRIBLE TRAILING.
In conclusion, look at your LCD with your eyes, not the camera. -

Hey, ive been researching the np8690 for a while now and am all but ready to press the "buy now" button!
I definatley require a laptop, but my main focus is FSX, the flight simulator game. I would really appreciate if someone could test out the sort of fps you can get on it, at various resolutions that would be awesome. Also if it performs better when only two cpus are in action, or when 4 are going. FSX is cpu intensive but if someone could do this for me it would be really appreciated.
Thanks -
Hi guys.
I am thinking about buying one of these laptops with the i7 720qm and gtx280m.
Have read through a lot of pages but stilll a bit confused so a few questions if any owners can help:
1) Does this green trail problem effect all machines/some machines/specific drivers/config?
2)Is there any other down points I should be aware of?
3) Is the spacebar ok for gaming? read somewhere its a bit pants?
4)Any reason I should wait from buying one? (new gfx card etc?)
5) Anything else I should have asked that I would want to know?
Thanks for any help you can give.
Much love. -

The "green trail" problem affects every notebook with a TN panel for the past 40 years since it was invented.
There are no down points with this notebook.
The spacebar as well as the rest of the keyboard is exceptionally stiff. The keyboard was made for button mashers in mind. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=5767635&postcount=1005, http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=5767836&postcount=1009
Nvidia is said to unveil their ace kicker to the MR 5870 at CeBIT in March, the GTX 380M. If it does come true, that card will start shipping probably a month or two after CeBIT.
Read read read. Learn everything you can about the notebook. Knowledge is the key to survival. -
@sephira
what ss said
the only 'issues' with the w860cu are the subpar spaeakers, which you will never use bec your getting a headphone, and the subpar touchpad, which you will never use since youll be using a mouse.
all in all id say this and the asus g73 are the best bang-for bucks you can get right now. but do note that ive heard that g73 components are notoriously difficult to upgrade. -
Cool thanks for the infos (c:
It will be mainly used for music production and the odd game here and there (mass effect 2 is looking tasty) and it need it sooner rather than later so think I will be placing my order for one of these as soon as I know that the new macbook pro's cant come close for price (big hope huh) -
mass effect 2 really is a great game too story/graphics-wise. perfect to show it off to your friends with a mbp -
I, too, am seriously considering this notebook as well, and thanks to Sephira for asking some of the questions I had in mind.
Additionally, I'd like to ask about the portability of this laptop. I couldn't tell from videos, but is this laptop in terms of size and weight, too cumbersome to take around to lectures, bookstores and coffeehouses?
What is battery life like when non-gaming? Say, taking notes during lecture or browsing online?
Also, if I don't intend to game much - maybe the occassional Torchlight or Diablo 3 (if it ever comes out) - can I leave out the thermal paste option? I know it's only $30, but every bit helps, and that $30 could go towards shipping or something. (if you can't tell, I'm a poor student) Or is the thermal paste pretty much necessary?
Thanks in advance. -
but since it only comes with a 3-cell battery you will be getting at most an hour on batteries doin the normal stuff. these things being gaming notebooks/portable desktops are not really meant to be used on battery anyways.
hope that helps some. -
Any idea what the difference quality wise is with the two screen resolutions?
Mostly looking for a bright screen with good colors and I seriously doubt I would want or need to watch full HD content (got a PS3)just looking to get the best performance. -
And I've never seen this green trail thing on a TN display. I mean neither of my big TN panels compare to a good IPS/MVA panel, but they're not doing anything so obvious as leaving trails or whatnot. -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
This is moreso Nvidia's "problem" rather a problem with the notebook. Try the drivers over at LV2G. The GTX 280/285M has drivers available for it that work fine for Blu-ray movies as well as games. You can also try 187.71 tailored specifically for Clevo notebooks.
The ghosting is subjective to each user's eyes, but it is there. For you and I, it may be extremely subtle. -

if you cant wait or dont wanna use whql drivers, then your only true recourse would be to wait till modders can find a true solution to this. -
it is bright with deep blacks, and from the comments of many here, it is much brighter then the 900p screen.
it scales pretty well and i use different resolutions when i want bigger texts and stuff. scales great in-game too. the only game that is doesnt scale well in is ETW ( but only with regards to fonts and texts).
i know brandonsi did a review of both screens since he had both the 900p and 1080p machines and it reflects most of what ive said.
hope that helps a little -
Another quick question: With Cebit just a couple of weeks away, if the new 360M or even 380M are announced, will the 8690 incorporate those and change price (probably increase) accordingly, or is it more likely that Sager will instead include the new GPUs into whatever model comes after 8690?
I'm just not sure if it's worth pulling the trigger now, or wait for Cebit. I know I'd be pissed off if in about 2 weeks, the 8690 goes down drastically in price. -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
No new models are coming out. But the GPU's that are said to unveil for the current models will probably not drive the price up in terms of a baseline config. There is a lot of pressure from Asus and Alienware on Clevo to keep the prices competitive. The GTX 285M will most likely be the standard config with the GTX 380M and MR 5870 as upgrade options. Keep in mind that only the the MR 5870 will be ready to ship out right after CeBIT. The GTX 380M may need atleast another month or two to prepare inventory.
-
Hmm...that makes sense, thanks. The 8690 would definitely be a fantastic with a 5870 instead. Hopefully Sager won't increase price too much to compete with the G73.
But yeah, I suppose 2 more weeks without a laptop won't kill me, especially if I intend to keep it around for the next several years. Well, Cebit it is, then.
Thanks again. -

I think, to be honest, I'm just waiting for a little more of a price drop after Cebit. But yeah, been looking for a laptop since September, so Cebit is when I draw the line! -
yeah the wisest thing would be to wait till cebit since its just around the corner and you never know what may come out.
regarding ati and nvidia, ati gous have genrally been the better performers in synthetic benches and nvidia has generally been the better performer in realworld gaming. not sure if updated ati drivers have changed this trend recently though... -
The 1600x900 screen is really nice, bright, clear and more importantly you will get more fps in games with it still looking really good. Benchmarks have shown so far about an extra 10 fps difference in performance on the 1600x900 screen when compared to the full HD one which to me is very important for now and the future. -
What's the GTX 380 supposed to be? I hadn't heard anything about that. Updated 280?
-
Greetings, comrades.
I have officially joined the Klevo Gaming Brigade and my NP8690 arrives on the 24th. I opted for the basic model because after using my Presario F712NR (Athlon 64x2 1.7GHz, GeForce Go 6100 integrated GPU, 1GB DDR2) for about two years, the i7-720QM, GTX 285M, and 4GB of DDR3 RAM will be enough of a boost for me
I purchased a tube of Arctic Silver Ceramique just in case my thermal compound isn't applied well. I would have bought AS5, but my local Radio Shack was out of stock, and I figured I could always replace the Ceramique if I wasn't happy with it. But from what I've read, the type of compound doesn't matter if it's applied correctly.
I've managed to read this entire thread and pretty much know what to expect, but I have a couple questions nonetheless.
I may have missed this somewhere along the line, but what program do I run to find out the CPU and GPU temperatures at idle and load?
Does this laptop have the infamous lag spike every 60 seconds when gaming on the wireless, or is the wireless configuration handled by a program other than Windows?
And do any of you use a port replicator? If so, what do you recommend? -
There are many system utilities available, many of which are free. CPU-Z and GPU-Z are two basic ones available. Here's an excellent thread that highlights many free applications at our disposal. Scroll down to Resource Monitors (or just read the whole thing). Many are commonly known apps but even I discovered a few I'd never heard of.

There are a bunch of applications out there that can monitor your CPU and GPU temps. A basic monitor that many people as well as myself like to use is HWMonitor from CPUID. It's clean, it's small, and it does the job.
I don't recall anybody having lag spikes every 60 seconds on wireless. The Intel 5300, or 6300 if you bought your notebook recently, is a strong wireless card whether it be handled by Windows or by the optional Intel PRO/Wireless software.
I don't think a port replicator will be necessary for this notebook. All the major ports are accessible with only the DC input, HDMI, and two USB ports in the rear. For me, I use a four port Dlink USB hub chained to my left USB port. That's all the docking I need. -
But if none of you have experienced the problem, it must be manufacturer-specific. Of course, it could also be attributed to the quality of the Intel wireless drivers you referred to.
EDIT: Wow, I did get the 6300AGN. Last time I checked it shipped with a 5300. Sweet. -
i also have decided to get this sager i was going for the new g73, but i got tired of waiting,

Hey all....I have a graphics driver quesition. My NP8690 shipped with stock Nvidia drivers of 186.47. I tried to get the official updates on the Nvidia website and, despite the fact that the 280m is listed, it did not work. I tried the Dox drivers for 195.39 and I found that my 3dmark06 dropped by about 500 points.
What drivers are you using and what has your performance been like? -
Unfortunately from what others have said, for some reason Clevo's not supported even though it doesn't list it as an exception
-
-
dox 195.62 is a very good driver!!
-
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
195.62 is junk regardless of who modded it or not.
-
-
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
That's because Dirt 2 was not out yet at the time of 186.81. Of course there is going to be an optimization for the game. In regards to stability, 186.81 is superior overall. Every driver Nvidia has published after the 186 drivers has been shoddy with repeated issues that had already been solved since the 182 drivers. The only exception to this is 196.34 as Nvidia cleared up a lot of their mess and got back on track with this driver. Hopefully when it goes WHQL, it will be the next great driver to succeed 186.81 for 2010.
-
195.62 - powermizer doesn't work, so don't go there. 195.81 is OK so far, powermizer works.

Hi, I am currently working my way through this thread, but given the 215 pages I thought I would ask these questions:
1. Is the 8690 upgradable? I would like to get the base 720 model cpu with 4 gigs of ram and a dvd burner, but later as prices come down (or I make more money) I would like to buy the 920, and maybe some more ram and a blue ray burner.
2. If it is upgradable can a person upgrade it themselves, or should it be sent in for an upgrade (and if so where)?
3. Is the i7 much better than a duo core? I was looking at a Sager 2098 which is about half the price. http://www.pctorque.com/sager-2098-gaming-computers.php Is this worth the extra amount?
Thanks, sorry running off to church and birthday party otherwise I would run some more forum searches.
Thanks! -

I put a thread up in the "what PC should I buy?" section. Saying that I would like to use it for business, but be able to run some of the more graphic intensive games like Sins of a Solar Empire, Crysis and Iracing
-
According to notebookcheck, the GPU in the Sager 2098 will run Crysis in medium settings with decent FPS.
The GTX 285m in the NP8690 will run Crysis on high with no problems (around 40fps). Modern Warfare 2 gets similar results.
If you need a lot of battery life in a business setting, steer clear of the NP8690. It's a gaming notebook, and only has about an hours worth of juice. -
Hmm thanks, I didn't know that. I thought for some reason that there was about 2 hours in the battery. -
I'm not worried about the battery life because the engineering department where I'll be using it has power and ethernet built in to every desk. Fun stuff.

Hi guys, I dont know what happen but my speakers arent working. Just today. It isnt making any sound. What is wrong with it?
