Note that according to others, none of the W870CU received had that same sticker on them. It would be easy for people who didn't know that to come to the conclusion that the cooler CPU temps in the 17'' model were due to slightly better cooling, bigger chassis size etc etc. It may also lead some to think that the 17'' model was more suitable for the extreme CPU's too. Removing that sticker dropped my CPU temps by 12C on some Cores, 10C on others. If it was something essential, all of the laptops would have the sticker or a design blocking of the vent.

They did that to protect W870CU sales since the two notebooks are similar to each other in many ways.

just received my 8690 tonight, very happy with this beast, no dead pixels, fan the very quiete, and only starts to get a bit louder at load, but still softer than my previous laptop so I'm happy with the fan noise. The cooling is just phenomenon, CPU idles at 40+C, and goes up to 60+C at load, GPU idles at 50+C, and only goes up to 86C even with furmark extreme burning stress test, actually it's because the fan run at full speed once the GPU temperature reaches around 85C, then it just zigzags around 85C and never went up anymore.

Here are some quick benchmarks, still downloading 3dmark vantage.

    GPU stress test with furmark

Heaven directX 11 benchmark, very smooth, about 30FPS at 1200 x 1024 resolution

well the 870 has some major advantages like a bigger screen and two hdd bays. but it seems like there isnt any logical explanation for the presence of the plastic either.

Well this program seems to show the 5870 temps just fine. Here are my temps idle and then running 3dmark06. Also, this is with stock paste. I might repaste both the CPU and the GPU, but I would be pissed if I end up getting worse temps.

The W870CU still has superior cooling aside from the absence of the EMI sticker; the W870CU has larger radiators and fans, and more intakes. trvlbug pretty much covered it. The main attraction of the W870CU is the larger screen and twin HDD bays.

yep, so I removed the plastic sticker, here are the new temps:

    CPU: 38-46C
    GPU: 48-52

I didnt think this modification should have affected GPU temps. I wanted to include them for posterity, they have apparently dropped however. As predicted there was a drop of about 6C in CPU temps so I would call that a win.

I will be applying X23 sometime this week I believe so I will post the new temps when that happens...though I will probably mess up horribly and actually just cause the temps to skyrocket >.>

It's also worth noting that, IIRC, not all 8690s came with the EMI shielding either. I don't know if that was because it was a late change, or maybe just something that certain resellers put in.

A very basic and probably stupid question, but anyone know how to remove the heatsink ontop of the 5870 in 8690? I removed the 4 screws, but the top plate is still unremovable as though it's glued or something.

Thanks, got it removed, but i kind of screwed up trying to apply AS5 on the GPU, I removed the thermal pads and applied the AS5, then realized that the thermal plate on top is not flat and some parts won't even be connected to the plate without the height of the thermal pad. Now my GPU temperature rose to 70C+ idle and around 100+ when gaming so I stopped doing graphics intensive stuff now, need to get the thermal pads replaced soon...

Just a question: You wanna use XP to squeeze more points out of 3DMark, right? Because otherwise using modern hardware like the i7 and GTX 280 with XP makes no sense. You would throw away performance. Here are some guys who used XP for benchmarking you could PM them, I'm sure they know where to get the drivers for XP.

    Hi all,

I have got my NP8690 for about 3 wks. Everything is fine ever since.
But today I can not start the machine without an AC adaptor, just use the battery.
I tested the battery with batteryMon, it is good and fully charged.
When I started it with AC adaptor, at this time, I can unplug the AC adaptor and use the battery without any problem.
I did not start it just with battery at first time I got it. So I don't know when I got this problem.

    Thank you!

I am sad again... after ripping off the thermal pads from the graphics card yesterday while trying to replace thermal paste, the GPU temperature rose to idle 60-70C... I called my reseller for replacement of thermal pads and they told me need to order from Sager which will take somemore time to ship here. Again, I have to wait... could only play non-graphics intensive games like WoW now or the GPU would go up the roof, tried furmark again and the GPU temperature just shoots up, when it reached 100C I quickly turned furmark off. The punishment for trying to fix things that are not broken...

Hey guys.... Got my NP8690 Yesterday and so far I love it. I will run some benchmarks on some games that I play in the near future to help anyone out that may be interested. BF2, BF2BC2, COD4.
    Specs: i7-820, HD5870, 4GB1333, 500GB HD

Here are my thoughts so far and any input on the temps would be appreciated.
Sturdy build and very easy access to all the important stuff.
Great Screen (I have the 1920x1080)
Sound... not so good, but I knew this going in from the forums. I had to remove the Realtek software to get rid of an annoying hiss.
Keyboard is great. Trackpad is picky but hopefully I will get used to it.
Palmrest temps for the left are almost room temp... right side gets a little warm but no uncomfortable.
First Run (stock) on 3DMark06 was 13,480
CPUID's HWMonitor would not pick up the 5870 so I am using HWinfo32..... The CPU temps with the plastic cover on are Idle 46 and with the cover off 41. The cover will stay off. The GPU temps are a different story... At idle my 5870 is at 59-60. I ran 3dMark06 twice and the GPU temp hit 97 on the therm diode/mem temps. I am pretty sure this is above normal and will probably re-apply the thermal paste. Any thoughts contrary to that are appreciated.

Again... overall the laptop seems to be good quality and I am happy I sent my previous laptop back... (ASUS J51JX-A1).

The thermal pads are there to dissipate heat away from the individual GPU memory / RAM chips and are also used to compensate for the height difference that the RAM chips cause. When you remove them and replace with paste, contact isn't made as it should be so they can overheat. If you had mentioned your intentions here you would have been strongly advised against doing that of course.

I recommend that you try to source the thermal pads from elsewhere for some kind of fast or next day delivery as well as ordering from Sager. This way you can use the ones you receive for the time being and then replace them with the ones that Sager send.

What did you do with the thermal pads that you ripped of?

If you could benchmark your BFBC2 performance on 32man servers I would be very grateful! I have just ordered a W870cu for this game as it kills my m860tu (q9000, gtx260m gets 15-45fps). I am just hoping the fps stay above 30!

Edit - yes those temps seem well off. There was another user who had high temps due to poor application of thermal compound. When he re-applied his temps went down to mid 70's on load

I have the 8690 with 285m and it runs well over 30fps with detail, shadows, and texture on high, effects on low, AA and HBAO off, and war tapes turned on.

UPS finally found it...in Illinois- How a package can go missing in California just because someone was too lazy to scan it is beyond me.

It "should" arrive tomorrow. I asked Sager to get UPS to prorate the shipping charges to Ground service.

Readyboost is really a gimmick. With the amount of memory you have it will not provide any kind of performance increase.

It helps if you have 512megs or 1 gig and you open a bunch of apps, but who would have that small amount of memory these days unless they had an older machine.

having a huge problem now with my 8690, was running fine before, until yesterday I tried starting it, it beeped 2 short times and won't start, there's no more beeps after that, I checked the pheonix bios POST codes but there are no combinations with only 2 short beeps. Anyone know what could be problem? I tried swapping the ram, doesn't work, take out one ram and it won't even start.

The two short beeps imply a memory parity error in the first 64K of memory. Try one stick at a time and in each slot. should be able to figure out which one is bad, unless both sticks took a hike.

Well can you borrow some known good sticks from another machine, friend, etc.., also you may try re-seating the CPU. if you do not want to try that it may be RMA time. Unless somebody else has some suggestions.
