Well the only way to know is to test. I can't say for sure how much your temps will rise. I got a 2*C rise when I use throttle stop
.
-
Advantages? The fact that you can disable HT (finally), overclocking options and raid support doesn't scream advantages to ya
? You can also test it and see if it's right for you
.
-
Yup, that's all you need to do and then enjoy a wonderful bios release.

If I increase the multiplier in the mySN BIOS, will turbo boost still hold?
Also, why do most people hate hyperthreading? What is its real purpose anyway? -
I have been using that Bios on mine for quite a while with no problems as well. regarding your CPU temps, have you removed the sticker covering the CPU vent on the inside of your backplate?
-
Personally, I don't use the bios OC option. ThrottleStop gives me more control of the multipliers and TDP.
As it relates to HT, we all know that there is a performance boost with it on but it has compatibility issues with older games and programs. It's just nice to have an option to switch it off when needed. -
kevindd992002 Notebook Virtuoso
Yup did that already a while back, from the time I unboxed the laptop that was what I did. I think it's normal for my ambient temps and for a 920xm. -
kevindd992002 Notebook Virtuoso
Ahh. But with throttle stop, turbo boost is still intact? -
Yup, turbo will still be working as it should, just at higher clocks
.

Thanks for the info ChinNoobonic
By the way, anybody here experience lock-ups/freezes with the nvidia 258.96 whql drivers when playing youtube (flash) videos?
I just reformatted my laptop, installed all the latest drivers including 258.96 and when I played 2 youtube videos it froze and I had to force restart. I then reverted to Sager's 186.81 drivers and never had a freeze after that.
Many people here report the same issues but a couple of then report also that they don't have that issue.
Can anyone confirm this? Thanks. -
I am on 258.96 (280M), and no issues with youtube or anything else.
-
kevindd992002 Notebook Virtuoso
Hmmm, that's weird. I have the 285M though. Do you have the latest adobe flash player 10.1 installed?
-
same for me (280m) no issues. flash 10.1.82.76
-
kevindd992002 Notebook Virtuoso
Though many people are reporting that the Flash playback freezes are still there for some systems.
-
I get driver crashes when watching Youtube, but only if I'm on battery power. This only happens with the GPU accelerated flash (10.1), and if I turn off the hardware acceleration option, it does not crash.
But I have absolutely no problems playing any intensive games, so I think it's a flash problem. -
kevindd992002 Notebook Virtuoso
Hmmm, I noticed you have a 5870. So I guess we can't compare because we use totally different drivers. But yeah, I guess it's a Flash problem too.
-
Same happened to me - then it suddently worked. But I had to send the laptop in and replace the GPU but I'm pretty sure that had nothing to do with it. I think it was some compatibility issue between the new flash player and firefox.
-
I'll try using Chrome and IE to see if I still have the problem.
EDIT: Chrome and IE have the same problem for me. ATI drivers crash with hardware acceleration enabled on Flash 10.1, but oddly only when on battery power. When I'm plugged in everything is fine. -
Has anyone tried booting from the inbuilt memory card reader?
I recall seeing the option in bios but can't seem to get it to work.
Wanted to do a bios update but it seems i'm the only one in the world that doesn't own a usb stick. -
Had the same problem a while back with the flash 10.1 beta. Fixed it by reinstalling flash. My new problem is that, some videos stutter but that might just be how the video was encoded.
I think bios will recognize the card reader as a usb device, so put usb to 1st priority. Make sure it's a bootable card or it won't work. If that doesn't work, just make a bootable CD. -
kevindd992002 Notebook Virtuoso
How were you able to make it "suddenly" work? And yes I was also using Firefox that time.
How did you know that the problem was not with your GPU? I'm thinking the same thing because I bought my card brand new from RJTech and there's no problem if I'm using the official 186.81 drivers from Sager's site. -
Just spent 3 cd's on making bootdisks cause it can not boot from the built-in card reader.
I've been trying out a couple of boot disks from allbootdisks.com, but none of them support SATA dvdrom's.
So basically, it boots, but once it loads the driver it doesn't find the dvd-rom where the clevo bios files are located.
Would be lovely if you can direct me to a method that has been reported working fine. -
Nero works well for making bootable cd's. Did you try the setting usb device as 1st priority and booting with the stick?
-
I do not own a usb stick. Just a bunch of sd cards and a semi-broken external usb hard drive.
You can't boot from the built-in card reader (because it requires driver to be loaded to work i assume). I thought it had the option in bios (as there's a bunch of different devices to choose from), but it doesn't recognize it.
It doesn't even recognize an external card reader (like my desktops and macbook), as this as been my preferable way of usb booting in the past.
I should probably just buy a usb stick and be done with it, but it's one of those peripherals that i keep forgetting to invest in. It's actually pointless since i have so many other portable storage devices.
You reckon with Nero i could make a bootable cd (well dvd in my case) that will run a dos environment for me to run step1.bat and step2.bat from the cd directly?
I'd rather use another method since i hate nero and also i would like a method that has been tested and successful.
EDIT:
4th disk wasted. Getting a stick in the morning. Nero boot is as useless as my others because it does not include a sata dvd-rom driver, which means it can not mount it. It loads up fine to dos and all that but you can not access your clevo folder with the correct files.
It did however come with a NTFS driver so i could access my hard drive partitions. I tried running step1.bat but it seemed to freeze halfway. I'm not entirely sure if it's recommended running bios updating directly from the hard drive and i don't want to test it again, because i was afraid i had bricked my laptop. Had to remove the battery and reinsert it for it to turn off.
Works fine now though!
Still somewhat hesitant using the rar from chin. A checksum would be nice for a peace of mind. -
I had this problem a week ago, and was reallly really annoyed with it. I fixed it by reinstalling flash player though, and retained 258.96's on the PC.
-
kevindd992002 Notebook Virtuoso
Were you using Firefox as well? Or was it happening for any browser?
So I think it's better if I uninstall both the nvidia driver and adobe flash player first and then reinstall the nvidia driver first before the flash player? -
i wonder if anyone have the same problem as me with windows live messenger, it stucks contantly if im downclocking or get it back to stock clock... do anyone have the same problem and maybe some solution? fyi im using ATi driver 10.7
-
I Finally got the flash to work by doing a disk swap (booted Freedos with UBCD and switched to one of the dvd's with my clevo folder).
But one thing that worries me is that i seem to recall having more settings in advanced control in the bios menu?
I would love to have the Kobalt Computers bios that comes with the machine to see if there is any functions that i miss.
Stupid as i was i did not save any information regarding my original bios.
Would it be reasonable that there bios could have had other functions than the one's in the Bios thread?
Is there a way to backup your Bios so you can share it?
Also, what's the benefit of disabling HT in bios?
I was under the impression that if you disabled HT in bios the cpu would run at stock clock all the time but i seem to be wrong. -
Hi,
Is it possible to flash 280m GTX with 285m GTX BIOS. If not could someone point out for OC BIOS for 280m GTX. Also is it possible to OC or DC CPU???
W860CU, Intel i7 Q 720, 4,0 GB RAM -
Am using Firefox atm. I'm not entirely sure about any other browsers, because I don't really use others. But I didn't uninstall the NVIDIA driver, and just proceeded to uninstall the flash player and reinstall it again

kevindd992002 Notebook Virtuoso
And you never had a single freeze problem since then? -
My friend's NP8690 shipped with USB3. Was that normal?
-
kevindd992002 Notebook Virtuoso
That's weird, I never read anything about the motherboard of the NP8690 being revised to support USB3. How did your friend confirmed that the ports are indeed USB3? -
So, I've just got my 8690 today and was very excited with it, unfortunately it came with a stuck pixel and now fixing it with software from suggestions around the forum. Gonna wait for a day to see if it will be fixed. what a bummer.
My real question would be, after i got my laptop today i have took of the sticker from the fan vent and installed win7, then i installed drivers that was provided with it. What else do you guys suggest i install or tweak to get the best out of the system? bios? gpu driver ? .... thanks for your answers. some suggestions as to what some of you owners did when u got it would also be appreciated. -
From what I know, only the 3D version has usb 3 support.
-
kevindd992002 Notebook Virtuoso
I thought only the screen was differnt with the 3D version?
So the whole motherboard was changed just to support 3D? -
The whole debate about HT is not about speed, but compatibility with applications.
-
I thought it was just a screen change as well, but the specs on the clevo website shows that it has usb 3 support, which indicates a motherboard change. The question really to ask, is it the same motherboard as the w880? Since the w8x0 share the same mobos,
-
He didn't order a 3D screen, it came with a 1080p screen. Ordered it from RJTech.
-
Because the port was blue and the drivers disc had the USB3 drivers on the menu.
-
kevindd992002 Notebook Virtuoso
Ohh. I just got mine around three months ago and it did not have the USB3, damn
-
Nope, none since then. I could be wrong later on though but seems there's no crashes for the while at least. Does it only affect the 258s?
-
kevindd992002 Notebook Virtuoso
Not sure about that. Since I got my 285, I was able to use two NVIDIA drivers only, the 186.81 and 258.96. I'm using the 186.81 right now and it works flawlessly but of course I would want to migrate to the new 258.96 since they offer greater features for Adobe Flash. -
the latest user manual shows one USB3 port is optional for W860CU and W870CU
ftp://ftp.clevo.com.tw/USRMANUAL/W8xxCU/W8xxCU_EUM.zip -
Ordered mine a couple weeks ago and I don't have USB 3.0, so it must be really new.
-
Yeah he ordered his last week.
-
That's a bit unlucky with a stuck pixel. You should be able to sort it out though.
Stick with stock drivers. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Update the drivers only when necessary. The only update that I've done is with the video drivers (Cat 10.7)
If you're on ATI MR 5870, you can use the AMD GPU Clock Tool for overclocking. Should be around here in the forums. Also, you can fiddle with core parking; search as well. Sorry too lazy to link the thread
-
Guys, i tried to downclock to 300/400 using the AMD GPU clock tool but my whole laptop got stucked.. Had to restart my pc. Im currently using the 10.7 drivers. Anyone have the same problem as me?
-
thanks mangbhoy. i've tried all the tricks in the book to get rid of the pixel with no luck. I'm so dissapointed because this is a great machine and that one pixel just makes me not satisfied with the machine.... I'm just that picky because u paid so much to want a machine that you are satisfied with. Oh well, i might just have to accept it even though looking at it just makes me sad.
