Ask one of the Clevo resellers in Europe (preferable the one you bought your W860CU from), they should sell them.

Good news everyone, it has been confirmed that both the Nvidia GTX 460M and the GTX 470M will be able to work in the W860CU (aka G860). I had my suspicions but at least now I know for sure. I plan to maybe buy a 470M for my mine.

Hello, I encountered recently a screen issue. When I would touch a certain part of the screen or create movement by moving/light tilting the screen, a particular part would get ripples, as if I pressed on it. Pressing behind the panel at that spot also creates the same effect. Is it a defect I can get a screen replacement for? Or is there a solution for that. I also happen to have a bright dot I can't get rid of by software or hands on techniques.

    This is great news...

Has anyone had any experience swapping video cards in the W860CU? Is it relatively easy? I can't seem to find any one having done so...

I have done so before and I am sure many others on this forum also have. It is straight forward and this clip will give you some idea. Just make sure you are grounded to get rid of static energy, that the battery has been removed before doing anything and that you clean the heatink and die before thermal paste application.

unless the 470 is as good or better than the 480 (which is so unlikely), it seems like a bit of a downgrade from the 5870.
but id be interested myself since i use cuda quite a lot, plus the fact that nvidia updates drivers more.
price and cooling would be key.

Will definately not be better than or as good as the 480, doesnt make any sense for it to be. Im think it will be on par or slightly better than 5870.

Well it looks like the W860CU Barebones I ordered on Friday is going to come with the GTX460M rather than the HD5870M. I'll try and get some benchmarks and temps up once it arrives. Oh, and I asked about the GTX470M being an upgrade option, no response yet...

guys i just wanted to ask, will 1066 ddr3 work with our 8690? im still on the original bios and i was planning on getting the 1066 cl7 instead of a 1333 equivalent but some have said that it will most likely be incompatible with our laptops.

The GTX 470M will cost more than a new 5870 and will perform either around the same or just a bit better so I don't think it would be worth it. The other day my reseller told me they don't have any cost details yet though.

I bought the 1066 instead of the 1333 and used it for a few weeks, nothing wrong. But found it to be slightly slower so I replaced it with the 1333s

interesting. i started a thread on bandwidth vs latency with regards to 1066/cl7 and 1333/cl9 here:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/har...et-upgrades/517924-cas-latency-bandwidth.html

the two anandtech articles listed clearly choose lower latency over speed. however gains, even on the desktop level seem minimal at best. i am however gonna use this for cs5 products which quite memory/resource intensive - ae,ppro,ps.
moral hazard made a great suggestion that i buy the cheaper 1066/7 and alter setting thru bios or software. i am not sure if the newer bioses support ram bandwidth/latency settings and software changes can be a bit dicey.

I was thinking the same, but now I'll wait for news on MR HD 6870 and GTX 485M and see if they would fit this laptop... even my GTX 260M is still enough to play the new games I like in FullHD.

Yeah I didn't update my BIOS, and still using the Novemeber 2009 BIOS.

But is there proof saying about newer bioses supporting BW/Latency settings? All i see in change logs are just new features and things.

it came into discussion since in the other thread, guys were mentioning that memory control settings are sometimes present in sager/clevo bioses

How can the 470M be much better than the 5870M, if at all? I thought the 480M only marginally beats the 5870m, and I'm sure the 470M will be a good deal slower than the 480m?
Unless it's PhysX games we're talking about.

    www.stylenote.eu/contents/en-uk/p29.html
Ok, it's Eurocom, but this should help getting a slight orientation.
I like the "Quaddro" from the Stylenote Site :D

    Notebookcheck
"The performance of the GTX470M should be a bit above the Mobility Radeon HD 5870."

You are going to try the 480M/MR in the W8XCU? Good luck! You'll need the 180W - X7200 PSU. What about the heatsinks, will they fit? I'm very interested if you manage them to work. If so, I'll definitely imitate you :p

Hey guys, just got my new Sager yesterday. Been thoroughly impressed with it so far. I replaced the stock HDD with an SSD from my desktop and this thing literally flies. The only disappointment is the sound; I'm using Denon D5000 headphones and there doesn't seem to be any bass. Just wondering if I'm doing something wrong. Thanks

It's not sure what TDP a GTX 485M would have. They should just be reasonable and make it 1 GB GDDR5... notebookcheck stated that the additional 1 GB GDDR5 alone eats 10-15W and thats just a waste. But yeah, what would be needed is a 180W PSU, W880CU GPU and CPU heatsink (they will fit the GPU and CPU, but you'll need to modify them to fit the case and work with the W860CU fans) or a custom cooling solution, i.e. a greatly improved GPU heatsink + third fan. I will only attempt this if the GTX 485M or the next high end MR are mindblowing, since modding costs are fairly high.

Damm that sucks that I have to pay again just to improve sound quality. I'm surprised the sound is so bad considering I've listened to other onboard soundcards on different laptops and they sounded much better.

I have the Clevo w860cu with the i-7 820qm and the nvidia gtx 280m and I decided that i wanted to upgrade the graphics card to the ATI Mobility 5870. Anyway, after a lot of research, I decided to trade my 280m for a 5870 to a forum member. I just received the ATI card today but before I sent him my 280, I upgraded the BIOS to the MySn XMG7C .12 BIOS posted on the 1st page of this Forum. We decided to ship our cards at the same time (I sent him my card and he sent me his). I installed the 5870 today and when I went to turn it on and all i get is two beeps and then the computer almost shuts off....the power light on the side of the screen is still lit and so are the lights above the keyboard, but the fans turn off and it shuts down. The screen never shows anything and so I cannot get into the bios. ?? I need help!!

Edit: My gtx 280m was the MXM 3.0b and so is the 5870...so I was under the assumption that it would be compatible. Am I suppose to flash another BIOS that would make the 5870 recognizable? My impressions were that the MySn BIOS would do that, however am I wrong? I may have access to another gtx 280m if i need to install that to flash a new bios, however I would prefer not to if possible. Thanks in advance for any help guys!

The mySN BIOS recognizes the 5870. For that matter, every W860/W870cu BIOS recognizes the 5870. The two beeps generally signals a bad video card, but maybe if you left the nVidia drivers installed, it just can't find the 5870, and therefore can't tell the system BIOS that the video card is present and operable. Looks like it would boot into VGA though. First, be sure the 5870 is properly inserted; sometimes you need to pull slightly back or jiggle the card gently to assure a proper connection. If that doesn't work, you could try using the available 280M to boot into Windows, uninstall the NV drivers and load the VGA driver and see whether you can boot after re-inserting the 5870. Then you could install the 5870 drivers. If that doesn't work, I don't know what else there could be other than a bad card. Maybe someone else here has seen this and can offer a better solution. Sorry, I know how discouraging this must be.

Windows Drivers have nothing to do with the BIOS POST?
You can not see anything, right? Have you swapped anything else?
Did you reconnect the fans, do the heatsinks get hot?

I would detach everything not needed (DVD, HDD, battery),
Try to reconnect the card first (as The Revelator has told you), it happened to me the first time as well. If this does not help, try your old 280M.
If it passes POST, you have it, if not, go on with the RAM, etc.

I have to agree with you regarding the VRAM - TDP. On the other hand, my 280M could need some more VRAM playing some games.
Modifying wouldn't be the problem, but have you got any suggestion how much a 485M should cost? Like 1,5k?
Are you uising the W860 or W870? Did you try anything besides the 280M and MR 5870? I would be happy to try the 480M and modify the heatsink if I could and if I am willing to afford nvidia's price policy.

No nothing shows up on the screen. The heatsink doesnt even warm up at all. It's like the card is not even turning on or anything. I have not swapped out anything else either.... basically I'm screwed! I'm going to get another 280m tonight and put it back in to see if it will boot. If so, I'll uninstall the driver (just in case) and flash another BIOS for good measure. Crossing my fingers!!

    Hi Guys,

I have been looking at getting one of these bad boys from either Xoticpc or Powernotebooks, and have a few questions.

Is the 1920x1080 screen 120Mhz 3D Vision ready?

What type of FPS would I be looking at playing games at 1920x1080 using 3D Vision and the GTX 460M?

Can anyone give me a rough idea of shipping (Not VAT & Duty) costs to the UK using USPS?

Thanks in advance for any replies

Really? I've been reading on here that the except for a few rare cases, the sound is more or less tolerable under normal circumstances i.e. a slight whine indicating air gushing out.

by "annoying" do you mean that it gets excessively loud even on idle? that could be a deal-breaker for me... :(

My fan speed seems to consistently sit at around 45% (monitoring with gpuz) even if I am idle. It isn't quiet, but it isn't the ridiculous fan noise that some users have commented on.

Is this idle fan speed what you're referring to with an 'annoying' cpu fan? I wish we could control the fan speed personally...

By annoying i mean the CPU fan speed will be on until it hits about 35C then it will turn off, my temps will creep up until it reaches 50C that's when the CPU fan will turn on and the process will repeat itself I just hate it when it comes on because it comes on full force for about 3-4 seconds then lowers itself. I thought this could be an overheating issue but i did some tests and my CPU temp never reaches 63C under max load. Maybe if you have a quad-core this problem won't happen.

My CPU idle temps hover around 35C as well. My fans are always running if the laptop is on.

In the interest of figuring out your issue (though I wish my fans would actually cease when idle, lol) I have an i5 450M and a 5870.

Agreed. Here's mine. Note the missing catalyst version line.
