Edit: The short answer is no.

The only thing I can think of waiting for is eGPU which uses with thunderbolt 3.

With the thunderbolt 3 connection there are some options with eGPU that will be available later. We're talking about at least a year before it becomes standard or open or even affordable, I think. Even then though, it's not going to be the same performance as a 16x pcie connection. It's 40Gbps on thunderbolt 3 vs 128Gbps on pcie, so it's a bottleneck.

The other issue is Nvidia is just now starting to do beta support for eGPU. so far, the eGPU solutions have been proprietary.

USB3 to type c cables for phones and the like should be fairly common and will give you more than enough speed for most devices.

I agree with Meaker. It's just another adapter. You don't need a whole new laptop for that.

Unless there was something specific you are after of course using thunderbolt but it's early days on that and it's going to be quite some time until we see those and then you have the time for them to mature as well.

If you need a laptop now and don't plan on purchasing specific USB C devices, no reason to wait.

Hi everyone, Sager newbie here with a newbie question.

I'm interested in the NP8677, and was just about to pull the trigger on one at LPC Digital, when I learned that the battery wasn't user-removable. So, my question is directed at people that have owned Sagers with non-removable batteries- have you seen any problems with this setup, especially in the way of decreased battery capacity as time goes on?

I'm looking to keep my system for 3+ years, and will be using it on battery power for light use at least an hour a day, every day during that time. When I'm not using it that way, it will be plugged into the wall. I will only game with it plugged in.

I'm aware that all batteries lose their capacity as time wears on, but will I see a need to ship it to Sager to get a new battery after a few years? I would be OK with a 30% loss of capacity, but not a 70% loss, I would think.

@Iduna battery is removable after removing the bottom case cover from the laptop. Then, it can be unplugged from the motherboard and a few screws hold it into the case. You should be able to order a new battery from any reseller.

They are replaceable, as mentioned. It just isn't as easy as pulling a couple of tabs on the bottom of the computer to do so. You would just want to reach out to your reseller and get a new battery set up.

In general though, I don't think I have really heard of a lot of complaints about batteries going out extremely fast, as a wide spread problem.

The battery is actually pretty easy to get to as @pat@XOTICPC and @EmberV mentioned. You just need to remove all the screws on the underside of the chassis and then unscrew the battery fixing points - only a 3 minute job. The chassis has Flexicharge as well, which if you have the laptop plugged in a lot allows you to stop microcharging by setting a minimum and maximum charge % through the BIOS - instructions are in the generic user manual!

Is there a resource for Sager user / service manuals? I tried looking on their website in the manuals and drivers section for a manual for the NP8677, but there weren't any there.

They are available to download but not directly from Clevo and companies which have a business relationship with Clevo aren't supposed to release them to the public. We use snipets where relavent to send customer's instructions but we can't send out the full service manual - your SI or reseller should be able to help you with anything that you need or I'm sure someone else on here can point you to the best place to look ;-)

should i get the 970m version or the msi apache pro with 960m. msi looks alot nicer and has a multicoloured keyboard, better audio, cpu, ect. however its the 960m vs 970m. not sure if running ultra outweighs laptops overall strengths.

Which MSI apache pro are you talking about? There are a few models.

It really depends on your needs. Are you planning on gaming a lot? Do you care about weight? Do you care about max memory limitations?

There is a huge difference between a 2GB 960m vs a 3GB 970m on performance and scalability. Do you care about gsync? What screen resolution?

Edit: I assume you're talking about Sager as the 970m laptop. Specify model numbers.

i game a little bit, i like to see new games and what they look like. more of a test the hardware kinda guy when it comes to gaming laptops. i figure the 970m is overkill and i get a much lower quality product however the 970m stomps the 960m

So the Clevo mentioned in this thread uses a 6th gen cpu, ddr4, and a 970m. It's also lighter than the MSI. You can't really compare the two. The MSI is an older generation behind in every aspect.

backlit keyboard is better and screen is better, battery life is better on the msi. im set on the clevo but i have my doubts about usage as a portable computer. i need the best of gaming and computing. more to a laptop than just gaming imho. would u like to show me a review about the clevo

On Screen options, you can go from a simple FHD TN or FHD IPS, or a 4K UHD IPS, with gsync on either IPS screen, so I'm not sure what you mean by screen. The keyboard is backlit and feels about the same as the MSI kb (i checked while window shopping). The battery isn't that great, but then again if you want portability, a gaming laptop isn't exactly the way to go.

PS - I got nothing against MSI, but you're comparing an older laptop to a newer one. MSI I think still manufacturers it's own laptops just like Clevo. They also produce white box laptops for boutique stores.

I'm confused about this flexicharge option in the bios you are talking about. If I almost ALWAYS have my laptop plugged in, maybe only 1/2hr per day NOT plugged in, what do I set it to to maximize battery longevity?

    Hey All-

pretty urgent question here... I disassembled my p650RG, to replace the HDD with a 1TB SSD, do I need to take out the battery? or unplug it from the motherboard? Do i need to wrap my yet-to-be installed SSD with electrical tape?

many thanks in advance, I have never swapped drives before, but know my way around. having trouble posting pictures and can't resize to be under 2mb on my chromebook

If you don't turn it on, you can replace it with the SSD. In your case, if you know how to disconnect the battery, I would do it just to be safe.

Im not sure what you're asking about the electrical tape. What did you want to use it for?

I read that somewhere... To wrap the ssd in electrical tape before installing. Sounds like I'll skip that part. I see a connection from the battery to the board that I can unhook. Going to do that.

    Thanks for the response!!

satch420 according to the service manual you're supposed to remove the battery and disconnect the cable that connects it to mobo, before replacing drives. It may work without, but it's not that much work and the benefits of removing the battery outweigh the risks

    worked. phew.

Thank you, I did disconnect the cable, but did not unscrew and remove the battery... was a bit nerve-wracking as all my other Sagers had easier removable batteries, but it was safe and fine.

I had to right click on my computer, and go to 'manage', and then format etc to get windows to see the Evo 850 1TB SSD, and it worked fine (after some panic when it didn't recognize in 'my computer', but the BIOS did).

    sooooo, success!

In the BIOS>Advanced>Advanced Chipset Control you can enable or disable the "FlexiCharger" option. When enabled the following options are available:

Start Charge (set from 40% to 95%)

Stop Charge (set from 60% to 100%)

For example, you could leave the starting charge at 40% and the stop charge point at 100% - the laptop would charge the battery to 100% but then it wouldn't start to charge the battery until it run down to 40%. This would theoretically increase the battery longevity because it isn't microcharging. You can take care of the battery in the usual way i.e. if you let the battery completely drain several times a week it helps - FlexiCharge is more of an automated way of doing this without thinking.

    Things to bear in mind:

    - if you need to unplug your laptop and use it on battery in a hurry it may not have a full charge, depending on the way that you have FlexiCharge settings configured

    - if you leave it enabled for a long time (more than a couple of months) then the battery capacity meter reading becomes less acurate. The way to recalibrate this is to disable FlexiCharge and then let the battery completely run down to give it a full discharge and charge cycle.

The below is taken from the user manual - it's not explained in the 5 language "Concise User's Guide" but it is explained in the full English User Manual - on our website you can download the User Manual zip file which contains both versions :)

Thanks for the explanation. It seems like for me I should just leave it at default off, because my laptop is plugged in 24/7/365 except 3-4 days out of the week that I take it outside and I do run the battery to 5-10% or shut off. So I guess I just have natural habits that maximize battery life!

    Good evening everyone,
This is my first post here, hopefully I'll have more to come, but I have questions before I decide to purchase one of these machines. I'm coming from an i7 6700K with a 980Ti, but I would rather have something portable for around the house and gaming while on vacation and such, how far off will the i7 7600HQ and 980m be from what I'm used to (I play on a 1440p monitor)? I've looked for benchmarks, but it's hard to find one that compares, apples to apples, what the change will be. I'm well aware that I won't have near the graphical power that I'm accustomed to, but I'm just curious how much I'm losing. Secondly, and probably most importantly, I have two 1440p monitors that I would like to use with this laptop, will I be able to drive both of them? I have no plans to game on both monitors at the same time, but I will play on one while having a web browser open on the other and I need a laptop that will do this.

Anyway, thanks for your time, I'm really glad I stumbled across Sager while trying to figure out this laptop debacle, it seems to be the best way to go. Thanks!

If it matters I live in the US and will order from Xotic through Amazon.

    Welcome to the forum!

There isn't a lot of comparisons between laptop and desktop GPUs for the most part, excluding maybe the regular 980 desktop card now that it is in both worlds. But if you compare a couple of sites, like these here, you can get an idea of how they might stack up to each other.

    http://www.pcgamer.com/nvidia-geforce-gtx-980-ti-review/
    http://www.notebookcheck.net/Computer-Games-on-Laptop-Graphic-Cards.13849.0.html

I don't think there should be any issue using both monitors.

I've updated my overclocking benchmarks to include Dragon Age: Inquisition and Tomb Raider 2013. I've also included the raw FPS data and graphs for frame times, which are usually more accurate as they depict improvement linearly and are more useful for performance gain indication.
@Meaker@Sager I made sure the FPS graphs start at zero ;)

Thanks for the thoughts and ideas everyone, I decided to go with the NP9870 with dual 970m in SLI, depending on the game it can edge out the 980m in performance tests, sometimes by a wide margin. I'm working with Pat from Xotic and hopefully will be able to get it ordered tomorrow. Looks like I'll have to post in that owners lounge ;)

one beast of a system.... I have my old Sager 9262 next to me here, and kinda wishes I went for the newest desktop replacement powerhouse. enjoy!!!

so far so good on my 8658, haven't thrown real work at it yet though (heavy 3d modeling and rendering).

Question: Anyone know how to get the fans customize-able? I have auto (which is basically off) and full blast, with the fn + 1. Can I set the fans on auto mode to activate at a certain temp?

EDIT: Answer: fn + Esc brings up clevo control center, settings, custom fan start on/off. attached screens

EDIT 2: custom speed doesn't seem to work, anyone have a workaround to a medium fan speed?

Sounds like possibly a faulty power supply. Do you have any trouble powering on battery at all? Or never?
