I had the same dilemma but ultimately settled on the 1070 for longevity. I'd probably upgrade the 1060 in a year but will keep the 1070 for 2....hopefully. I don't know, I typically end up selling and buying every 6-8 months, which is awful. I'm hard to please.

same here i will still end up buying 1070 and just play csgo and Age of Empire 2
-
i upgraded my desktop to a gtx 970 like 6 months ago and have been very happy with it. I figure the 1060 is faster than that and the 1070 is much faster than thr 1060. Pretty sure 1070 is like gtx titanx levels or faster. So for me this is going to be a huge jump. Should last me at least 3 years im hoping. i was initially looking at 970m laptops before pascal came out so this is crazy fast for my expectations lol.deadsmiley likes this.

I play Wow and CPU intense game like civilization. But I'll also get the 1070.

Great temps for the p650 with the gtx 1060. The keyboard seems very warm though...
C'mon clevo, don't let me down with the 1070 version. I know you want my money

Yea. Wonder how much undervolting the cpu helps with overall thermals.
-
Is the display on the p670r the same quality (gamut etc) as the p650? Just bigger?
-
I will be buying the GTX 1060 version too. 70C seems very reasonable for the GPU temps, I may even try and push an overclock on that with some better thermal paste.
Here is my life story:
My thoughts are I currently have a P151SM which has a 765m and is still relevant. I can play newly released games at 1600x900 medium. Even Arkham Knight in its badly ported state worked on low at 1600x900 for the most part. And I remember the 800m series being released 6 months after I bought my 765m laptop which was a kick to the teeth as I was in the game quite early, but the "next gen consoles" also came out around then too. Point is, if the 765m, whose laptop to desktop performance gap was still quite significant, is relevant enough three years on... an actual desktop 1060 (though downclocked by some 10%) is going to stay relevant to laptop performance for at least the same amount of time.
I prefer my tech costs to be around £200 - £250 a year. So the Clevo P650RS that costs around £1000 should last me 4 years. I feel confident in that anyway.
The GTX 1070 would be nice, but not for the extra money. It breaks my tech cost per year margin as I'm not particularly confident that a laptop is going to give me more than 5 years of reliable use. -
I used Asus g50vt for 7 years. Not a big deal.

i don't like the stock ram laptops usually come with. whats the best DDR4 2400 so dimm i should upgrade too?
-
Fire Strike Graphics score on the GTX1060 laptop is 11045. My GTX980m gets a graphics score of 9737. That's a 13.5% improvement. Basically if your sitting on a 980m already, you've got to go for the 1070 to justify the cost of the upgrade. 13% isn't worth the trouble of selling.
I'd like to see the Firestrike Standard score for the laptop GTX1070. I'll be testing my new desktop GTX1070 tomorrow. -
What do you need it for? RAM has almost no impact on framerate with DDR4 at the moment, with the exception of SLI which these laptops don't have. 2400MHz really won't be much improvement. If you really want it pretty much any reputable brand would be fine, lower timings are better but corsair GSkill and crucial are all solid brands.deadsmiley and Xileforce like this.

overall
I agree. Im not sure the difference in ram is perceivable outside of benchmarks. Afaik though any RS laptop comes with 2400mhz standard. Im used to ddr3 1333mhz...so this will be quite an upgrade. -
That parts wrong, ships with 2133 as Clevo, but 2400 as Sager I believe.

Review for the P651RP6-G is online in the german part of NotebookCheck, english version should be online soon.
Available here - http://www.notebookcheck.com/Test-Schenker-XMG-P507-Clevo-P651RP6-G-Notebook.171275.0.html
Nice to see the 1060 kicking ass and taking names. Good performance increase from the previous generation and just to think it's about 20-25% faster than a 980m which cost a hell of a lot more a few months ago...
On the other hand seems like backlight bleeding is still a big issue. Probably due to the LCD frame. Maybe some tweaking can make it better. -
My bad you are likely right. I should have clarified that. One lingering question i still have though. The notebook check review of the new clevo from xmg said it had only white backlighting. As I recall this is in line with clevos site as well. But sager explicitly points out colored keyboard backlighting as a feature. Does this mean sager is replacing the standard clevo keyboards? Not that its a big deal, just curious.
-
uh idk, HIDEvolution has the RGB keyboard shown, and I will be pissed if it doesn't. Pretty sure @Donald@HIDevolution from HID told me it did (though I'd love confirmation lol Donald if your reading this your pictures on the site all have RGB), and clevo themselves had an RGB keyboard in it at computex. Most likely XMG either is changing it for some reason or has outdated specs. Their pics do look different than everyone elses though.
Edit: OH. They have to be different P650 models. The P650RS at HID has the USB C ports on the left, XMG has them on the right, so that's weird.
Edit 2: yah actually the rear io is different as well, wonder why they are so different. -
i wanted to do some video rendering and casual gaming. how much ram would you suggest from G. Skill or Crucial? i heard 16gb is pretty good
-
I hope that the bottom cover on my Sager is the same as that XMG. Those improved vents look like they will really help with temps.
-
Yea right after I posted that I checked hid out of curiosity and it showed rgb too. I just noticed that the notebook check review states that it is the p651. Perhaps that variant lacks RGB keyboard.
Edit: nvm went to clevos site for all the new p650 and p651 models it says this
- Full color backlit keyboard or White color backlit keyboard
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
Yes...the pictures are accurate...full color! -
Clevo's site lists RGB as factory option but white as available. I guess someone would have to make a conscious decision to go white, which doesn't make much sense to me.
You know what they say, "once you go white....you.....well, typically you find it average and somewhat lacking " -
haha yea not sure why you would go white only unless maybe it cost less?
Edit: Do you think the rest of the keyboard hardware is the same?Last edited: Aug 25, 2016 -
If you don't know too much about ram, yeah 16gb is the sweet spot for gaming and should be fine for non professional video editing.

where can i find all the latest drivers for P650RS-G ?

is this the correct one? http://www.clevo.com.tw/EN/E-SERVICES/download/ftpOut.asp?Lmodel=P6xxRx<ype=9&submit=+GO+

Have you received the laptop?

Hello mongon
as you can see from my signature II changed order .. I opted for the 17" version, the p670rs-g ... Anyway I live in Italy and ordered it in the US so i think I will receive it no befor the end of the next week ..
It's a long wait .. When it arrives I will let you know for suremongon likes this. -
Great. I'm really interested in the temperature during gaming. Thanks

you are interested .. I am scared .. I red on the official GTX 10xx series thread some scary comments that reported somethig like 90°C in gaming with throttling at 92 for the GTX 1070.
Anyway @Donald@HIDevolution assured me that temps should be ok. -
That's abnormal. It should around 80. But let's wait and see.

I was pretty set on the 15 inch p650, but now I am wavering, considering the 17 inch p670... Is the larger notebook significantly cooler/quieter? Obviously I'd prefer the smaller laptop in general, but depending on the relative performance maybe the 17 inch one is the way to go...
HardCore88 likes this. -
I think yes, any way I opted for CLLU on CPU and IC diamond on GPU
It was the same for me ... I opted for the 17" in the end, just to be sure since the price difference was 15€ ... in theory more room should mean better temps .. -
In my case the difference is $60, but that is still peanuts compared to the overall cost. Typically I'd like to hook it up to a monitor, but my wife and I use the same monitor, and so sometimes I may want to play games on the laptop itself. The 17 inch screen is probably nicer to look at than the 15 inch one, right? It is 1.5 pounds heavier, but I do not need to take it anywhere on a daily basis. Just need to be able to travel with it a few times a year. Now it just sounds like I am talking myself into the 17 inch one.

First some P670RS-G Pictures.
Notice that 17" will have a subwoofer but the 15" does not.
Also notice the bottom cover on the 15" is full plastic, while the 17" does have aluminium finish.

Are there any other differences between the P650 and P670 that may not be immediately apparent? In another thread someone mentioned the P670 has a poor quality keyboard, any truth to that?

Great temps on the 1060! Looks like the thinner chassis isn't holding it back.
Almost nearing the point where I'd comfortable order a Sager 8151. -
Looking for the temperature of 1070 model.

Same keyboard on both.
But i only sell the white backlit one.
BTW I just tried the P775DM3-G with 1080.... oh my... i need to jump to that thread too!
BUT back to P650RS.... give me an hour to get more info sorry! -
I'm battling between gs73vr with 1060 and p650rsg with 1070. Gs73vr is larger and lighter. But p650 is more powerful. Such a hard choice.

I ordered the p650RS-G and can't wait for it to get here. I know the build quality won't be as good as my Alienware, but they are too late getting their line out and always so expensive. Just speculation, but I imagine my Clevo/Sager configuration that was $1760 would be around $2,500 in an Alienware chassis.mongon likes this.

I ended up settling on the p650rs after deciding that having more future proof hardware, and better cooling was more important to me than like an extra .3 inches of thickness. But it's all in what your priorities are. Those thin laptops tend to have very high surface temps and run louder than slightly bigger ones. Also a lot more bang for your buck with the clevo. It costs almost the same and u get a gtx 1070. That's a big upgrade.Wonkyfinger and mongon like this.

Wait for you guys reviews.

I wasn't even considering 1060 once the lineup was announced. Not enough performance gain over my 980m to justify the upgrade.
