Ugh, I'm so anxious to get Prema's mod on. I just want the 306 BIOS/EC. I NEED to match that 980m!

You think you can actually pull that off? Definitely report back! -
htwingnut already pulled it off
its definitely possible to reach stock 980m performance with a 970m. just need a good capable chip and some tweaking skills

Any update on the 970m/980m overclocking race by the Way?

Thinking of getting myself a P650SG from AffordableLaptops Australia (a Metabox/Clevo reseller).
One thing I noticed is the inclusion of a Sharp 4K MATTE option.
The screen choice is the only thing I'm grappling with at the moment. One consideration is the EDP vs LVDS connections. If Mobile G-Sync is actually going to be a driver update, I highly suspect it'll require EDP to function. From what I've compiled in this thread, only the 3K and 4K options use the EDP connector.
So, my screen options from the reseller are (with additional cost in AUD):
1080p IPS Matte (No TN option here) - $0 included
3K IPS Matte - $149
4K WVA Samsung PLS 60hz Gloss - $199
4K WVA Sharp IGZO 60hz Matte -$429
Scaling and power consumption aren't an issue for me. My current laptop is already the W230SS 13.3" with 3K IGZO screen. If the Sharp 4K is anything like it, it should be an incredible screen.
I'm pretty much ignoring the P650 3K option though, since it has no chance of scaling (pixel doubling) correctly.
So given the EDP requirement and 3K no-go. My real question is:
Is the Sharp 4K screen really that good and has anyone seen a Matte one? I know people have used their own matte screen covers, but this appears to be matte from factory. -
This Acer has the matte Sharp 4k: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Acer-A...91G-75TD-Notebook-Review-Update.133985.0.html
-
batman has it as well
-
Yes, but only in April...
-
well does the metabox reseller offer it before that?
-
AL in Australia seem to offer it right now with the P650Sx series.
They do have the "Batman" P750ZM as well but it only has the Samsung PLS 4K option available.
It's also available directly on the Metabox site here without any mention of delays (usually they remove the option if there's none available or a wait time):
http://www.metabox.com.au/store/b124/Metabox-Prime-P650SG-Laptop
Might shoot them an email to double-check. -
As you guys know, the P650/P651 does not have a mSATA slot, only 2x M2.
Can I re-use my old mSATA SSD in one of the M2 slots using this adapter? http://www.amazon.co.uk/mSATA-to-M-...=UTF8&qid=1424645631&sr=8-3&keywords=msata+m2
Thank you!
What holds you back from doing so? 306 BIOS/EC is out there. -
I answered you incorrectly. You DON'T need to re-flash vBIOS if you don't want to overclock. The unlocked vBIOS is superior in all ways.
-
Yes it is and no, I do not have matte version, I have glossy.
-
So here are my settings, idle temps have improved 3-4c on high performance, and remain between 39-44c on Energy Saver and Balanced with 25c ambient room temperature. Regular usage like browsing and videos yields around 55c.
However while gaming and specifically BF4 on High settings, 71fps cap, 64vs64, I am reaching maximum temperatures of 80c. This yields an average of 10c reduction. In my opinion this is phenomenal and largely outweighs the 7-10% performance reduction when you take into consideration the benefits these lower temperatures will offer in the long run. I must note that I keep the notebook propped up in the back about 1.5 inches and all intake vents are unobstructed. I would like to hear of temperature yields with these settings while also using a notebook cooler.
To obtain Turbo Boost Short Power Max you simply multiply the Turbo Boost Power Max by 1.25. This is in case anyone wants to tweak with values in-between 37 and 47. However leaving the Turbo Boost Short Power Max at default doesn't seem to affect anything so lowering this is up to you.
-
This was during a video encode with Handbrake which constantly pins all 4 cores at 100%. So it was basically a stress test. Funnily enough the next time I ran an encode the fans kicked in correctly and my temps were constantly around 89-90c. Does that sound more like normal behaviour? I might buy that coolermaster U3+ cooler anyway for when it's on my desk.
-
Take your 3 and 4 active core multipliers and lower to x28
-
Sorry do you mean me? And is this in intel XTU? And what exactly does this do?
I'm assuming this just means that when using 3 or 4 cores it'll limit the Max CPU frequency to a lower level? Rather than letting it go all the way to 3.4GHz?Last edited: Feb 22, 2015 -
I mean itsavw. He can lower the "3 Active Cores" and "4 Active Cores" multipliers to 28. This has no affect on performance.
Also, just ran Firestrike (Stock setup). Graphic score of about 7600. Temps are as follows: (Keep in mind, this benchmark keeps GPU under full load. As such, these temps are maximum and are unlikely to be reached while gaming thanks to V-Sync.)
Fans on auto: Max temp of 61 degrees
Fans on max: Max temp of 54 degrees
NOTE: Both of these tests were done on a running Notepal X-Slim laptop cooler.
These temperatures are amazing. I will have about a 20 degree OC headroom

When the base clock is 100mhz, the easiest way to think of multipliers is literally as the word describes, a multiplier of the base clock to determine your final clockspeed.
E.G 38x multiplier = 100mhz x 38 = 3800mhz (ie 3.8ghz)
In the case or "1/2/3/4 cores" in XTU, you basically specify the maximum clockspeed of the cores according to the number in use. The general idea, is that when only 1/2 cores are in use, they run at a higher clockspeed (hence, higher multiplier). Most games are very single-threaded and often only use 1-2 cores, so this keeps them fast.
Reducing the 3 and 4 core multipliers is to reduce heat output when fully taxing said core numbers. On the flip side, since the likelihood of actually using 3 or 4 cores is quite low, adjusting these will rarely have any real-world effect outside of heavily multi-threaded apps (such as rendering/calculations) or benchmarks.
Similarly, the Turbo Current limit is an entirely separate limiter which is based on power consumption, which in itself tends to only trigger in full 4-core load scenarios unless you drastically reduce the limit. But reducing multiplier to suit power/heat requirements is always more effective. -
OK thanks. So providing temps of around 89-90c are normal for the P650SG when all 4 cores are pinned at 100% for an extended period then I'm going to try out a laptop cooler to see how effective that is. If I'm still not happy I'll play around with the 3-4 core multipliers a little to see how much of a difference that makes.
-
I did some extensive testing a long while back in this thread with images. Laptop will exceed 90C on CPU if it runs on all 4 cores at full load and caps out at 57W TDP (or about there). My machine is using Liquid Ultra and remains idle at 38-44C. Under load, machine never exceeded 80C during games (even on max/ultra presets) and I dont use a notebook cooler.
Cores will never go above 3.39GHz under load (Prime95), but that will peak at 92C. At 3.19GHz, 88C. Then again, Prime95 is not a real world situation so I can only give the results from that test. -
Please give me some advice about the battery life- as I'm about to buy.
I hope I don't have unrealistic expectations. Using xtu and perma mod to under volt/clock- approximately how much more battery (light browsing) could I get from the P650SE (1080p screen [AUOB156HAN01.2], 970m, 4710mq)?Last edited: Feb 23, 2015 -
OK I'm convinced something is going on with my laptop. I just started doing an encode with Handbrake and one of the cores got to 98c. Intel XTU said that thermal throttling got up to 14%. The fan was going but it was relatively quiet and didn't really seem to be scaling up to match what was happening. I left it though just to see what would occur.
After 15 minutes of encoding something odd happened, the fan actually kicked into gear and within minutes all cores were between 86-91c. Question is, why doesn't the fan kick in earlier? Is there something wrong with the firmware? -
Even though your laptop is new I would go ahead and check for dust accumulated. I opened up my batman after a week and didn't have any dust to worry about but there was slight accumulation already. The likes of which I will probably have open up and blow out every 2-3months.

Anddd the screen issue is the biggest thing keeping me from ordering. I want an IPS display but minimal ghosting. I'm thinking about ordering this one for $1394 as I can't order from Eurocom. Does anyone have any feedback?

Where do you live? I'd just buy from XoticPC. Great service from them. Get the +$45 IPS panel option. It's the LG IPS panel and supposedly very good quality
-

I live in Southern Florida and buying from XoticPC through Amazon for the same configuration is $100 more expensive. From my research when you order from any vendor, the 1080p IPS panel you get is the LG LP156WF4-SLB5 or the AUO B156HAN01.2. Apparently, a lot of people use that model of the AUO to replace the terrible stock screen on their Y50's and there's more information out there than the LG screen.

We have to charge more on Amazon as we have seller fees that are charged through Amazon for the purchase. Buying through the site will be the less expensive route. -

Thanks for the heads up; I know prices are less when purchased direct from resellers, but I have to purchase through Amazon.
The Prostar machine has an LG LP156WF4-SLB5 according to them, which is the same supposed panel P650SE's from XoticPC also have. It has a 35ms response time however, so again, I fear severe ghosting. ='(. Can anyone with this panel provide test examples to see if it's really bad? -

I completely value your opinion and believe what you are saying about your screen, but I'm also trying to gather what the larger consensus on that display is rather than what one person's very valid opinion states. -
fair enough.

I should have mine by tommorow. I'll let you know. This TN panel is so ****, the change'll be nice

Great! Thanks Sebi, it'll be nice to know. I'm really itching to order and that's pretty much my final concern.
Also Sebi, your laptop history is nearly the same as mine. From screw gaming, need to focus more on school and more important things, to crap, I can't go without gaming. -
Hey guys, greetings from Turkey! I just joined the forum to be a part of this thread
I own a Monster Tulpar T5 v.4.1(P650SE). My configuration has an IPS 1080p matte panel with 8GB of 1600 MHz RAM.
So, I would like to ask you guys something: My results in benchmarks seem to be fine compared to other people who own the product( http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/6008659?) but my FPS in games are 10-20 lower than those people(I get 30-40 FPS on Dying Light and around 40 FPS on Shadow of Mordor both on max settings and both with the latest patches applied). I made sure to run the games at the same settings as those people and my NVIDIA driver is also up-to-date. What could be the problem?
Another thing is: where can I find all the newest released versions of the drivers for things like the control center, BIOS,chipset etc...? I update the major drivers from the corresponding manufacturer's website but I can't find the drivers for the other things I mentioned. Thank you all in advance and have a nice day

Have you looked at your clocks/usage levels? Can you post your results and the ones you are comparing to?
-
I have bought this laptop from XMG a few days ago and I like it, quality and performance is really good but I´m having a really annoying problem.
When the cpu is at 100% and the fan is working at full speed it has a terrible whistling noise coming from it, I can clearly hear how the whistling becomes stronger when the fan speeds up. At the beginning it wasn't a problem, but when I have that noise for a while gives me a terrible headache.
Anyone has the same issue than me? Any ideas about how to fix it? or maybe I should have to send it back to xmg?
Thanks! -
Ear plugs man!
Jokes aside, is this with Fn+1 full speed fan or when you have fans set on auto. I checked mine and neither fan really makes a whistling sound. If anything, its the GPU fan whistling! -
Hi all,
I'm reposting this again. If some owners of the P650SE could please help me that would be great. I'm about to buy but this is stopping me.
I hope I don't have unrealistic expectations battery life. Using xtu and perma mod to under volt/clock- approximately how much more battery (light browsing) could I get from the P650SE (1080p screen [AUOB156HAN01.2], 970m, 4710mq)? Is anyone getting over 4 hours? -
I would suggest you attempt using throttlestop as well to keep extra life going, and forcing the GPU power states down. Ask Meaker for more advice. He apparently managed to get 2 hours out of a 4930K + 2 x 780M machine... I'm sure you could get close to 4 from that.
Also, you would not have a 4710MQ. You would have a 4710HQ. There is a real difference, but I am unaware of how much of a difference it has on battery usage, if any. -
Hahaha, yeah I should start using ear plugs
Well, I didn't know about Fn+1, so I was using the fans on auto before, I changed them to full speed and still hearing the noise from the fan, but the noise is stronger. Also I can hear some GPU fan whistling but is not as penetrating as on the cpu fan.
Thanks! -
Open it up. Could be dust or something clogging vents or fins and happen to be whistling or fan itself.
-
At 62.5mV undervolt, Power Saver mode, 50% brightness I get around 2 - 2.5 hours. I'm a little disappointed, I'm not sure why I'm not getting 3 hours of light usage.
-
I dont get this.... Shouldnt these thicker laptops be getting decent battery life?
That battery life isnt good... Its awful :/
Makes me pretty disappointed!
Why do these laptops with heavy graphics cards and cpus drain so easily?
I mean it makes sense but isnt there kinda a lower tier for power usage that these laptops can rest at?
I feel like for games 1-2 hours makes sense. But if im at panera without a power cord and im dead after 2 hours of using the internet, im a pretty sad camper. -
It's using a 4-cell battery. If it had an 8-cell or 9-cell, we'd get a lot more life out of it, most likely.
-
Thanks, I'll check when I get home.
One thing though, I did have another look at Wingnut's review here:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...l-impressions-and-review-by-htwingnut.767349/
and he mentions the exact same thing about CPU temps reaching 98c after he repasted himself with the diamond compound. So maybe it's just how it's supposed to go?
I might ask the vendor if they're willing to do a repaste though just in case, since the service center is only 10 minutes from my house. -
Believe me, buy some good paste and do it yourself. Get yourself accustomed to doing it.
-
Wow, something is definitely wrong with yours. I get 4 hours on power saver easily with MS office use, browsing chrome and coding. My buddy who has the same laptop as me also gets ~4 hours so I know this is not a freak occurrence. If I remember correctly, HTWingNut also got ~4 hours in light load test...
-
You're kidding?! Please confirm this somebody- I will cancel my order immediately if this is the case
I've seen review's saying this can get closer to 4 hours (which is just acceptable).
Other owners please clarify what kind of use you're getting.
Thanks
